Post by: D4D on August 22, 2013, 09:44:52 PM

Works well.

I'm sure the Makita would work better !

Happy with the Ryobi One+ gear, would be even more happier with the Makita gear.....!!

With 230nm of torque you will have no problem, we use them at work to hold up building so you should be fine. I will be purchasing one in the next couple of months to add to my already large collection of tools

X2 but again makita would probably last longer.

No troubles with Prado wheel nuts etc

They work well
We use these at work good unit
Have the 1/2 and 3/4 drive
the 3/4 drive will probably shear the studs off

They do wheel nuts with ease.  Better than the cheap air impact guns.

The 1/4" pozidrive impact drivers however don't quite have the guts.

look at the torque when looking for impact wrenches.. i think the good air powered wrenches are 600? nm

using the ryobi or the makita u will need to loosen the wheel nuts and tighten them with a breaker bar or using the correct method, like a torque wrench to tighten them correctly..

i have a cheap GMC air impact wrench and its about the same torque as the ryobi and makitas mentioned above.. and yes, most of the time i have to use  breaker bar to loosen the nuts then i wiz them off with the gmc.. much quicker..

They are pretty good D4 I've used them a few times and have some decent grunt. Only thing I found was the battery didn't last too long and once its starts to pack up, the torque drops significantly  so make sure you have a spare handy

.....using the ryobi or the makita u will need to loosen the wheel nuts and tighten them with a breaker bar or using the correct method, like a torque wrench to tighten them correctly.....

I find the Ryobi undoes them OK. When refitting, I use a wheel brace to do the final tension.

If you use a breaker bar to tighten them, how do you get them undone on the side of the road...??

Over-tightened wheel nuts are unnecessary, and are a pain in the rectum.......

i dont use extreme force, and i actually ticked off a mate for over doing his up way too tight..

i use a breaker bar but i use it in the lifting side and not pushing down that way it doesnt over tighten. also i have been doing it for years so i dont over tighten the nuts.

i have a ufixit wheel wrench that i take offroading now, use to take the breaker bar..

but i also use to have a hammer that i had a pipe welded on that i use to extend the socket handle.. i used that method for years to undo or tighten nuts..

but no i never over tighten my wheel nuts.

Definitely no need for a breaker bar for the Makita.  Unless you do the nuts up to the point of almost stripping!

Post by: Brumbypt on August 23, 2013, 08:45:05 AM
umm just to let you know again, NO i do not over tighten my wheel nuts..

using the bar is just so i can get a feel of how tight the nuts are, where if you use the impact wrench you are not always 100% sure if the nut is up correctly..

most of the time my impact wrench can undo my wheel nuts when i am taking a wheel off..

remember its a cheap weak GMC which sounds like it has way less torque to the makita and ryobi cordless impact wrenches.

Sorry Peter, I wasn't trying to imply you over tighten.  Just pointing out that unless the nuts are done up to stupid tight, the Makita is up to the task.

I got the Ryobi one+ as well. Works great on all the trailers. I got the One+ because I had a lot of the Ryobi stuff already for camping (18v chainsaw, fan, radio, air compressor, torch, dust buster) and they all take the same battery.

I've use the impact wrench on wheel nuts, and the bolts that hold on the points on my 14 run seeder. I was hoping to just break off the bolts but it actually got the nut off (not sure how, I didn't think there was thread on the end of the bolt  ???). It seems to be perfect for me as its only the odd job here and there. Like most things, for industrial applications can't go past a Makita or similar industrial brand.

Let us know what you end up with D4D and let me know how it goes.

Bonus !!

So they price matched an online shop?

That makita at 170 is good price. the ryobi is 99 from big green shed.

**Edit, just checked 129 from B G Shed.    I thought I paid 99, **

Even better price for the Makita then D4D.
presume you got the 230 Nm one ?

So they price matched an online shop?

Yup as long as it is the identical item, an Aussie shop and they add postage. In this case postage was free :)

If you happen to find a lower price on a stocked item we'll beat it by 10%*

*Excludes trade quotes, stock liquidations and commercial quantities. Shelf prices may be lower than advertised to ensure lowest prices every day.

Bunnings' price guarantee applies to any lower price found on an on-line store or in a physical store in Australia. It applies where the other store's final price, inclusive of delivery, taxes, fees and charges, is lower than our price

I thought in another thread, (think the bunnings vs masters thread) that a few were disspaointed with the bunnings price match guarantee?

What did you do, just take in a print out of the special price from online store?

Yep. I have quite a few (maybe 10) Ryobi One+ tools, and some for a LONG time. None of the tools have EVER failed.
The original NiCad batteries died long ago, but were replaced with Li-Ion.
Very happy with them.

I wouldnt call it lazy, most oldies have a cordless drill etc to raise and lower their legs.

But its bloody annoying when I want to sleep in and the guy next spot over makes a heap of noise raising his legs.. very annoying.

Shinano and air compressor at home nowadays for the brakes and tyre changes but that's only for undoing and snugging up before hand tightening by feel. Can't be bothered with my hand tension wrench when I've got the feel for these things over the years, but the important part is all my wheel studs and the nut cone contact areas are always running with nickel anti-sieze. That's the bit too many ignore and why they shear studs and I've never broken one on my cars or had a wheel come loose.

The bars they give you with the vehicle are always right for the job and if they don't work for you out on the road, then you're doing something wrong. Daughter had a flat in her car in the drive one morning a while back and I showed her how to change it with her onboard scissor jack and bar, knowing I'd done them up with the nickel anti-sieze treatment. Always anti-clockwise to undo and vise versa dear (err.. not with the lad's first tinny and home made boat trailer with one ubiquitous old LH stud set on one wheel  ??? ) and she couldn't undo them by hand.  Righto dear, now put the bar at 9 O'clock, steady with your hands on the car and one weighted foot on the bar and now see how easy it is to undo? Now remember that weight at 3 O'clock when you have to do them up and let me know if you or some likely good Samaritan has ever done them up to get you on your way and I'll check them over. Did the same with the missus as you never know when they might have to and I'm a non-sexist kinda guy as you well know ladies  ;D

I've seen the ryobi 18V impact wrenches absolutely hammered over the last few years, and you can't kill them. I'd always be checking the studs manually after though - nothing worse than under/over torquing studs

I've built up a bit of a collection of Dewalt 18v tools over the years.
Have both the 450nm 1/2" drive and the 195nm 1/2" drive impact guns.

Since having the 195nm unit it's bigger brother hardly ever gets a run.
So much more user friendly and easier to hang on to in tight spots.

It's handy having the 450nm but IMO not as good as the little fella.

When I got my one+ I had a specific job in mind for it, but knew it would be something I used a lot.

Well the job I got it for - I wanted to "break" the bolts off my seeder that held the points on. They are rusted on and thought it would be too hard to get in there and cut them off. So I got an old socket on the rattle gun and thought they would just snap off. Well the bloody things started to come undone! There will be a few that I need to hit with the angry grinder as the coach head came out of the recess on the point and now just spins.

No regrets though its been one of the most handy tools I have purchased over the years.

I almost think my throat has been cut if I have to actually have to use a power tool with a lead on it.

Purchased a cordless angle grinder a while back... Bloody Brilliant.

Only last week I purchased a cordless grease gun. It's not yellow it's a red milwaukee.

I wonder when the cordless welder will be coming out ;)

I know what you mean Swogjb. I have a 5in and 9in angry grinder already, but would love to get a cordless. Just can't justify. When the drop saw I was given blew up I was going to buy a cordless one, but ended up getting the corded one fixed. Just with Royobi would bring out a one+ pop rivet gun. We have the 18v one+ chainsaw, its good for cutting a bit of wood for the Ozpig, but not much else really. SWMBO usually uses it while I'm on the Huski cutting firewood for home.

My new Ryobi impact wrench is in the bad books already with my other tools.

It broke a bolt off that was in a difficult spot on the mower I was working on and the back of it was welded on, so had to use the angle grinder, drill, bench grinder to sharpen the drill bit, tap a new thread so I could screw a bolt in so I wouldnt have to weld it on.

then reattach. the deck arms, then clean it up again so I can paint the final coat on.

I used the Impact wrench on a fairly big bolt, it wasnt tiny.. Anyway have to be more careful in the future.

only downside it is pretty heavy and cumbersome
