Title: Do Bob Jane tyres guarantee the lowest price or not?
Post by: krisandkev on August 08, 2013, 04:39:19 PM
Recently went to the Karratha (WA) Bob Jane store to buy a new set of tyres for our 200 series cruiser. Back home I usually go to a Bob Jane store because I have found them the cheapest and generally provide good service.  Anyway, the Karratha store was very much different. The lady looked at my tyres and said yes, you need a new set, which I knew.  Gave a price that was $95 each tyre dearer then I have paid back in Qld, but I knew the tyres would be more expensive in WA so I was prepared to pay extra.  Said they could do them the next day, asked about a wheel alignment, no, would not have time for that.  I also asked about their price guarantee as there are others stores in Karratha, including a Bridgestone store. The very disinterested lady said no to the price guarantee and not to bother going to the Bridgestone store as they would be far too busy.  So I booked the car in.  Then I thought, I will go to the Bridgestone store just to see.  The guy there was very helpful, gave a price $60 a tyre cheaper then Bob Jane and a free wheel alignment and can fit the car in tomorrow.  I told him what the lady at Bob Jane said and he just laughed. Cancelled Bob Jane....
On Monday I sent an email to the Bob Jane company explaining what happened and to query their policy as stated on their web site. Even though their automatic reply was that my enquiry would be answered shortly, I have not heard from them.
But on the plus side, Bridgestone Karratha provided excellent service   :cup:.    Thumbs down to Bob Jane.  >:(

When I hunted for my tyres I went to 6 places two of which were Bob Janes in different suburbs in Canberra and while they were both cheaper than the other four, one BJ was $15 a tyre less than the other BJ, so it pays to shop around.

I will look at St George Tyres next time as they are $95 per tyre cheaper than BJ but not fitted.

Mate, I know the feeling.

I was roundly chewed out by the 'manager' of the Cleveland store 3 months ago.
In the service bay with 4 of his heavys, sorry , employees arms folded in a circle around us.

Seems it was my fault, the customer, that HE had ordered the wrong offset rims for my Triton.
And that he was now out of pocket. And I would have to take them even though the tyre was 2 inches outside the guard.
Apparently they are the experts. Not.

Ended up I got them to put the old rims and tyres  back on. I was going to use these on the CT.
Employee reversed it out of the bay. He and the manager went to collect the new wrong rims to put in the tray so I could do whatever I wanted to with them. Sell them maybe.
Braindead had left the keys in the ignition.
I can still see the look on their faces in the rear view mirror. With a rim under each arm.

Needless to say I went elsewhere.

And I tell this story to whoever will listen.

Did they make you pay for the rims first?

No, didn't pay for the rims.
The usual go is they hang onto your keys until everything is finalized.
Braindead must have forgot so I took the opportunity.

Wonder if they still have the rims?

St George Tyres are definitely cheaper than BJ,

Comparison for 285/70/17 BFG Muddies

BJ Hornsby $411

St George $335 per Tyre fitted and balanced

these were prices last month

That's a shame,

I've used Bob Jane at Gaythorne/Keperra and one other time at Coorparoo, always good.
In my case the Coorparoo guys also ordered the wrong offset rims, when I pointed that out they were good about it and ordered me a new set, in a different brand but just as good, and the old Prado looked really good for it.

Last time I ordered tyres (dec 12) Bob Jane Keperra smashed the quotes I got from 2 Bridgestone stores in Brissy northside.

Or Not

They couldn't and wouldn't even come close to price matching for me buying my BFG AT's a few years ago. I discussed my quote from elsewhere and that their add in the yellow pages stated that they would beet any quote.  He firstly tried to make out that I was telling porky-pies, then I produced the other companies business card with the prices written on it.  He then stated that they (the other company) must have made a mistake in the price because Nob Jane couldnt even buy them at that price.  He discounted his original quote but would not beat the other quote.

Yep, it is a mining town.  But the tyres ended up being only $30 each dearer then the cheapest I paid last time back home, plus they did a free wheel alignment.  So not too bad.  Kevin

Just remember Carl the BJ BFG will be Michelin Aust supplied and the st George will be grey imports.  I have bought grey imports too and have no issues but you are on your own with warranty if a problem.

Just remember, not all tyre companies will supply all tyre shops... All tyre shops can get what ever tyre you like... its how they get supplied.

Some cases they have to buy them from other brand stores who will make their chunk on top too.

It is the same here in Toowoomba.

They think we have no where else to go.

Brisbane is an hour and a half away.

BJ Toowoomba wanted $425 for an Allied Scorpion alloy wheel.

Wheels R Us wanted $245 per rim. They are located on the north side.

I have always found fourbys the cheapest quote over the phone for tyres. But job Jane toowoomba were less than 10 per tyre dearer so went with them.

Bought a new set (5) of Bridgestone Dueler 697's for the Paj 2 weeks ago. Did a fair bit of shopping around the local tyre stores.
Bridgestone Select in Ferntree Gully quoted me $265 per tyre, fitted and balanced, with wheel alignment $55 on top of that. Keep in mind that price was their sale price, and included 10% RACV discount.
I got off the phone and rang Bob Janes down the road; they quoted $245 per tyre, fitted and balanced and would throw in the wheel alignment, so a saving of $155.
I rang on a thursday and had the tyres fitted on the saturday morning. We've had a few sets of tyres over the years from these guys and always found them great to deal with and always cheaper than other stores.

FWIW, I love the 697's. Much more aggressive tread pattern than i had originally thought. Yet to try them out in the dirt, but great on the black stuff, and stick like s**t to a blanket in the wet!
Cheers

Bob Jane capalaba quote on D697 285/65R17's for 200 series: $440 each fitted including wheel alignment.
Bridgestone tyre centre Cleveland (10mins down the road) $375 ea + $55 for WA.
So, no consistency whatsoever. Best of luck, it's a lottery out there....

Geez, that's a fair price difference. Granted, mine are 275/65R17, but still....... ???
I suspect I may have got lucky. I reckon they had a set sitting there as they offered to fit them the next day, plus it was the end of the month. Still very happy with the price tho!

We went to BJ at Blacktown when we lived in Sydney. The guys there could not be more helpful, price matched our 285/75/16 BFG AT's with some imported BFG's.

We went to him for some inner tubes for the kids to go down some rapids in, gave us the inners at a great price and threw in a valve remover as well.

Couldnt say enough nice things about the guys at the Blacktown BJ, apparently it is very dependant on which store you visit.

I think what got me a bit upset was that I used Bob Jane’s web site to send them customer feedback and stated what happened and asking them to clarify their price promise as stated on their web site and TV ads, but they did not bother to reply.  I know I could lodge a formal complaint but I am sure the sales lady would just deny it all, and how could I prove what happened.  Oh well, life goes on.  But it is great that people have put their good stories about Bob Jane on.  As I originally said, back home I usually use Bob Jane.  Kevin

It was still worthwhile, even if they didn't reply to your email (which of course they should have) perhaps it will show a pattern of complaints and they may eventually do something about it.

Or they could jsut ignore it all together  :D

Just bought some BFG  All Terrain A/T's a couple of weeks ago (16" ), "rang" around  4 places first and asked for their best price on the size i wanted, and i happened to drop past the Albury shop on the way home and they were $290 each fitted and even then he said he didn't stock them but would get them in... YES please,  their price was $10 cheaper than the cheapest quote and $40 cheaper than the dearer "reputable" competitor... shop around boys.

Well rang Bob Jane at Hornsby for One BFG All Terrain 285/70/17 and was quoted $380, but didn't have any, they did advise that their store at Grandville had five, rang Grandville and yes have some at $450, but I said Hornsby quoted $380 don't you guys have the same prices or price match.  we will price match any other retailer but know our own stores WTF, you won't get my custom and I have 7 company cars as well

No one can guarantee the lowest price. No matter who they are. It's up to the consumer to shop around. I never believe the quotes from retailers saying lowest price guarantee. They have too many terms and conditions. The best way is to play their game. Talk to the manager and go from there.

Off topic slightly but I dropped a flat in off our hard floor/hardroof camper to beaurepairs Wynnum store (east Brisbane) just before Christmas and picked it up a couple of days later.
I asked the manager how much and he just said merry Christmas!
I am due for some new tyres on the Prado in about 10k so I know who I will be talking to!

Tried Bj recently on price match on 5 bfg muddies I had been given a price of 295  each at a local independent store. Guy on the phone was arrogant and really didn't want to help. Best they would do is 299 each so stuck with local guy.  As far as  I am concerned they can stick it.
