That must of hurt. Hope all goes well.

If there is any upside, I would suggest putting a cricket ball in his hand when he is all better. His injury might allow him to be our next wrist spinning genius and turn it square like Warney.

A bit of an update,

We had a great result, no surgery cuts or pins or plates. They were able to get it all aligned up under a general and then set it in a cast. Still in hospital at the moment and we will see the doctor this morning. No major pain at all and Declan had a better sleep than us. Hoping to get out of here this morning as someone is quite bored.

Thanks for all the kind words and wishes

'Green stick' fractures are a great design solution for the lifestyle of kids, who are destined to fall off stuff / fall over as part of the growing up thing.
So, no need to use your cable expertise to build him a traction set-up... That is a good thing!

Great news that no surgery required, although once it has healed it never happened  :D

Please pass on our well wishes from LB, myself and out family.

On the up side a friend of my daughter broke BOTH his wrists at the same time, falling backwards whilst playing basketball. For a 12 year old that was pretty embarrasing as he couldn't go to the bathroom, shower or anything by himself. Poor Mum was pretty sick of it by the end (of the first week) as well.

Went back to the hospital today and had some more xrays, looks as though the two breaks above the wrist are fine but the one above the elbow is a little bit out at the moment. Just waiting on hearing from the head doctor to see if wiring will be needed. Had a second opinion and more xrays tonight and it is touch and go for further surgery, here's hoping not but we want to get it all right so there are no future problems

Just found this thread - ye-ikes that must have hurt.

Glad to hear that the first two are healing up well GG - all the best for the last one. Like you say, surgery might not be your first choice, but if it fixed things up in the long run it might be worth it.

All the best to Declan - we'll be thinking of him.

Cheers,
Matt

Well we are off to hospital again for further checks. The xrays that were taken yesterday were checked at the childrens hospital and they want further ones to make sure all is ok. It sounds as though surgery will be needed and it will happen tomorrow. He has a school party in the afternoon tomorrow and is not happy having to fast.

Rant time- Have you ever had to try and find a kids sling for a broken arm. There are no such things in existence in Australia, surely with all the kids falling off bars, swings and trees there must be a need for them. We had to purchase one from Ireland last week and it arrived today. At least that brought a smile to his face with the racing cars on it...rant over

Just in case you need one here is the link  http://www.etsy.com/shop/KidsSlings?ref=si_shop (http://www.etsy.com/shop/KidsSlings?ref=si_shop)

One of our sons had to get his hand pinned back together (Thumb actually) and he loved it. Didn't hurt him and it freaked out the girls having bits of wire sticking out of his skin :)

Apparently it felt more like a tickle than a pain when it was removed.

Best of wishes for the young bloke.

So what a difference the childrens hospital is to all others I have had the fortune of visiting, bright, colourful and a happy place. Everyone works well and I only spent two hours there today with a half decent outcome. No surgery required, the bones has started to join back together so rather than doing anymore damage they are going to leave it and monitor it for the time being. Declan is happy as there are no more hospital stays.

Go back again on Tuesday for some more xrays and probably a new cast. Melbourne childrens is now are preferred location on the event of an emergency

Had the kids at the royal children's a couple of times, absolutely brilliant. The was they have set up the emergency is great, instead of waiting hours to be seen they do an assessment first and either get you sorted straight away or back out to wait but it's a lot quicker

I always hate the amount that they charge for parking in hospital car parks.

Last time wife was in hospital, was $50 a day for parking.!!

Never understand that. People parking there are either working in hospital, in hospital for a reason, or visiting someone who is in hospital.

Never a good moment, but it sounds like the childrens hospital is doing something to make it a little more bearable.

Meerkats, computer games, caterpillars, aquariums, sounds like it might take the fear off the children........

So sorry to hear about Declan's accident-that looks really painful! I taught a boy who did the same thing in the playground, except his bone was exposed. He walked into the classroom waving his arm around and saying "look what I did". He was as white as a ghost with shock too.

We had our own ouch this arvo. Swaggers who have been to my place know how steep my driveway is. Well this arvo my son had some mates around, he managed to disengage the foot brake on his trike then decided to ride it around the garage. The garage became the driveway and before we know it he is heading out of control down the drive. Fortunately he buckled himself in, 3 point harness, so as the trike went end over end he didn't fly out, he did however forget to wear his helmet. End result he has a nice egg on his head and a little less skin. Ambo ride to the Austin ER, checked out ok except for bruising etc. I guess he won't do that again.

It was bound to happen at some time D4D, great to hear he's OK, but I am sure now he has the taste for it next time he will have on the full face helmet  >:D

So we took Declan to the Children's Hospital last week for his final checkup after breaking his arm in three places.

Clean bill of heath with all the healing of bones as strong as before the break. He has gained 10 degrees of rotation outwards and lost 10 inwards which is no concern.

A bit over 3 years after the accident to get the OK? That's a looooooong time - due to the severity of the injury?

I know I busted my arm pretty badly about the same age & it was "only" 6 months or so  :'(, & when the young bloke did his elbow 2 years ago, he was right within 2-3 months.

Glad to hear he's good now though  :cup:

He had a bad break above his elbow which did not quite connect the way they wanted so they have been watching it carefully. All good now with only the 10% change in rotation and all have healed up strong
