Title: Bullbars - do they need some sort of compliance?
Post by: BigJules on July 17, 2013, 11:48:42 AM
This just occurred to me as I was reading one of the magazines. I see more ads for bars from new entrants into the market, even companies like Roo Systems and 4WDA, selling bars. I've never seen any sort of compliance plate on the bars I've played with, whereas my towbar always has one.

Whaddyareckon?

Have said the same thing for ages Jules.  Ever since that pedestrian bloke, Scrubby made a song and dance.  All Bull bars must meet ADR and subsequently each manufacturer must show his engineering to support their application, not just making a knock up of someone else work.  I know it would mean the end of a lot of backyard builds but as a 4wd community sometime there needs to be a ADR set to stop people like Scrubby.

AS4786. Motor Vehicle Frontal Protection Systems

So how many out there think that this standard, like electrical and gas standards, should be ignored by the lay producer of bullbars and we should be all allowed to go and hang whatever we want on the front of our rigs?

You have to love this place. Thanks Mace, that is pretty clear. Does make one wonder about some of the bars one sees.

Just as a further point. All vehicles that have airbags and wish to fit a bull bar require a marking on the bull bar that it complies with ADR to not disrupt the airbag deployment.

I have a factory Nissan/Arb bull bar that has the crush cans and I know it is compliant from part numbers.
However as Nissan just use a paper sticker it falls off, wares away etc. My patrol failed rwc for not having the compliance sticker on the bar. The sticker can not be purchased individually. So this will be an interesting topic in the next few years in Vic when 2-3 yo cars get traded with factory bars and cannot pass rwc.
I eventually got another sticker for the bar from Nissan (which they had to fit) to pass rwc.
I have heard that they are talking about making proper plates mandatory on airbag compliant bull bars to stop this from happening but goodness knows what will happen in the interim.

Cheers
Evo

Thanks for the heads up evo.  Just ordered my ARB bar so I'll see what compliance sticker/plate/markings it comes with.

All ARB bars have a have a yellow sticker on the passenger side inside the wing with all the ADR compliances on it as with all ARB bars ( I was a fitter for ARB )

If you get the bar colour coded they should remove it prior to painting and reapply after.

Maybe peel it off, photocopy it and put it away. Reapply the original. If you sellit you always have a copy. ;D
