Just wondering how many swaggers have acquired some form of basic First Aid training and how many have needed to use it while camping.
It's something I've been meaning to do for a while. As off-road campers we are often very far from the nearest medical help and possibly also out of contact range. I dread the thought of something happening to a loved one and not having even basic skills to deal with it.

I have had to administer a bit of first aid. Remove fish hooks from fingers, stitching up wounds treating burns and other things.
Kept a fellow alive at an accident scene long enough to hand over to emergency services (unfortunately he died later that night).
First aid knowledge is a must in remote areas.

I first attained my First Aid cert (St Johns) 10+ years ago and have done the refresher every few years as required; the last being a month or two ago. So far all I've needed to do is apply the occasional bandage to the kids. We always keep first aid kits in the car as you just never know.

We have done a first aid course. Never had to put it to the test, be nice if we didn't have too. But in remote areas its a must, just in case.

I use to have to do them every year for work..
Only ever had to treat minor cuts, bruises and dislocations.
Haven't "refreshed" it for a few years...
I guess I should. Better safe than sorry.

I did a coarse about 5 years ago on a job site that I was on and because that one expired i did first aid and defibrillator coarse about 4 weeks ago..
About 2 years ago I had to do CPR on my son when he was only 1.5 years old and if i hadn't done any first aid training he wouldnt be with us today..so I think everyone should learn some kind of first aid training..

Did a couple of First Aid Courses years ago when the kids were little. After doing the first course, used some of the skills on small injuries etc. Then when my youngest son was about 6 or 7 and was choking on a piece of ice (the cylindrical type with the hole through the middle) - it had gone down sideways and was trapped in his throat and he could not breathe. Without thinking too much, I turned him round and performed the Heimlich manoeuver - out shot the piece of ice. Other people were just standing there open mouthed.
A few months later I did the second First Aid Course with a friend. The instructor happened to mention that the Heimlich manoeuver is actually banned in Australia (can cause a lot of damage to the ribs etc apparently - and he did suffer soreness in the ribs for some time). Well my friend "dobbed" me in to the Instructor and told her what I had done to my son. The instructor then asked me, knowing now that it was banned - would I do it again. I replied yes - it worked, and it was my child.
Also all 3 of my sons had bad asthma and one had life threatening allergies - I believe that having done the first aid course gave me some skills to deal with that - even if it was only keeping calm in times of emergencies.
Money well spent to save someone's life

Cert one or two every two years at work. They pay for it.

To remain competent, we have to complete first aid training every three years and CPR training each year. So much has changed in the last year or so, I would recommend anybody who hasn't done training for a while to update their skills.
I would like to think I could help somebody and it would also be nice if somebody could help me.

Work pays for mine. I have to stay current (no pun intended) for my electrical spotters ticket. Never had to use it. It is important to update as they do change their minds about some things.

Yes. First Aid trained. I figured one of us had to be and as he's the physical one, it would more likely be him that hurt himself.
So far, I've applied first aid to my dog. She ripped open a paw pad on some yobbo's broken beer bottle ... but still wanted to chase the ball. I think I did a good job with it. Took her to the vet who said "$600 please and we'll knock her out and stitch it ... but no guarantee it'll work", so decided to continue with my own treatment. 4 weeks later, she was 100% and her pad had sealed itself back together - whereas the vet wanted to remove the damaged bit and sew the rest together.

Important afterthought: I'm also "trained" of sorts to operate a fire extinguisher and a fire blanket ... always better to be sure of how these work too.

I keep current through work but I've just been away with friends who work in outdoor education (involves a lot of expeditions and activities out in the bush) and after discussions with them, I'm going to get a bit more serious with my first aid kit and look into a "wilderness" first aid course for our bigger trips when we are more remote.

Did my first aid approx 6yrs ago and keep cpr current every 2yrs, never had to perform brain surgery or cpr but have positioned many a bandaid,,, most of the time on myself ::) . Everyone should do first aid or the very least know how to do cpr, Kindof the ultimate insurance policy really..

I have done mine through work, the kids school have organised a course after school next semester so both are doing that..... Just need the wife to do one

IMWO, your mad not to have it even for peace of mind... They don't cost jack Shit and could save ... well anybody. Your niece/nephew, your mother-in-law... etc.
Did mine through a Gov grant with 4wd Victoria.. Most people who were on the course had 200 horror stories, specially the president bloke.
Maybe they are fact, if they are, remind me never to do a trip with them, cause every trip someone dropped with a heart attack or similar...
