Sorry Gold Coasters - There goes the neighbourhood!
My new job came through based out of Southport so will be making the move back to the nth island in about 6 weeks.
Soooooooo - questions for the locals. :D
Parking?
Work is in Short Street which is just down from Australia Fair Shopping Centre. Is there public parking nearby? Cost? Is there MC parking and is that free?
Real Estate?
I get the impression that the market is still pretty flat up that way (but it will go up markedly in the next month. I always buy at the wrong time :'( )
Searching the net it seems that there is some rural areas within a reasonable distance of Southport.
Mt Nathan seems okay and Mt Tamborine looks good. Whereis has Mt Tamborine at 35k's and Mt Nathan at 19k's. Would you be looking at 45min and 30min for each?
Residential areas. Pacific pines has some amazing houses. Is this an okay place to live? What suburbs to avoid and whats good. Looking for 4 or 5 bed place with large block.
Do I have to buy gold chains and speedos?
Do I need to grow some middle aged man lady lumps?
Any advice warmly appreciated. 8)
cheers
(I changed the title to make more sense)

Congrats Dazzler, sounds like an adventure!

Mt tamborine is a nice spot and the seasons pretty close to Tasmania's.
ie. At the moment it's effing cold but summers will be warmer(hot).
Coming home in the afternoon, up the mountain, you will be looking straight into the setting sun. Not nice.
Haven't heard of the other place.

Hey Dazzler, wellcome to the GC. There is a council carpark at the end of Short street called Carey St Carpark. You can purchase monthly parking permits from the Gold Coast City Council for around $150. Unfortunately there are'nt many other options for either parking or price. Mt Tambourine is lovely but is quite a drive to Southport and the road often closes with flooding.
I would'nt live in Southport or Labrador but from Runaway bay up to Paradise Point (inclusive) has some great locations and is only 10 to 15 mins away.
Cheers

Great time to buy now for sure. Many places not selling.
If you don't mind a bit of drive, look at Tamborine Village area (north of Tamborine Mt), 750 k places now for under 500 k complete with pool and sheds.
You'll soon get sick of running up and down the mountain, so give Mt Tamborine a miss.
Pac Pines is OK, an easy commute to Southport via Smith St, but is typicaly warmer in Summer by 2 degrees, look at it with Google Earth, you'll see it is a bit of a fish bowl.
One thing, don't buy in the low areas, Gold Coast is way overdue for a big 1974 flood again, and when it comes, it will flood a lot of people.
Look at Bonogin and Worongary ares to, nice spots.
Only the rubber necks wear the outfits you describe....... I remember when the Victorians used to get around in their VFL shorts, always good for a laugh.

Mt Nathan is nice, Guanaba also for that rural setting but still close. Pacific pines is ok also, close still..
Arundel is ok if you like living in the "burbs". As said before Runaway bay to paradise point is great. ( I am at paradise point and love it. Great little village feel. Avoid Labrador, southport
Good luck with the move and if I can help you out at all, let me know.

I'm with toeball.. You can get some really nice acre blocks there and it's only about 30 minute drive to southport
But as a few other people have said Mt Nathan is really nice..
And congrats on the new job..
Give us a yell if ya need a hand with anything..

Thanks for the advice, wishes and offers of help.
I will probably bring a trailer load of gear when I come up around late July so may need a hand with the fridge so may take up the offer. Will be hard leaving tas however my occupation has very very little opportunity down here whereas up nth there is heaps.
Might fly up in a few weeks for a scout about.
Gold Coast suns here we come!
Cheers.

Hi I don't recommend Pacific Pines at all. In fact, we can't wait to leave in a couple of weeks. There is major crime and problems with gangs at the moment & has been worsening for the last two years. For example, at the main park, yesterday at 11am on school holidays, there were two different people robbed violently with a knife. One man was stabbed, and the other (not stabbed) was a mother with her children. The park & skate park is well known in the area to have drug problems/problem teenage gangs. Fuel being stolen from cars left outside houses, etc. Houses look nice but I wouldn't recommend living here.
The other major crime / problems with gangs areas are Upper Coomera, Pimpama, Ormeau in the northern end. If you stay east of the M1, it is better for insurance purposes.
Mt Tamborine is really nice but quite a drive. Mt Nathan also is very nice, quicker to get to than Mt Tamborine. Maudsland & Guanaba are a couple of other options for acerage which are closer than Mt Tamborine and are very nice areas.
Good luck with your move!

Thanks Firefox
Ruled out Pacific Pines. Cheers.
Luckily my cousin lives at Tamborine and has invited me to stay with her for as long as I need so I can take the time to search around.
