Title: Homemade Mossie trap
Post by: Wortho on April 15, 2013, 07:17:42 PM

A Canadian friend posted this and they get mossies really bad. I remember not being able to see out of the fly screen they were so bad. Anyway I can't try it as there are none around at the moment so feel free to give it a try if you live up North.

HOMEMADE MOSQUITO TRAP:
Items needed:
1 cup of water
1/4 cup of brown sugar
1 gram of yeast
1 2-liter bottle

HOW:
1. Cut the plastic bottle in half.
2. Mix brown sugar with hot water. Let cool. When cold, pour in the bottom half of the bottle.
3. Add the yeast. No need to mix. It creates carbon dioxide, which attracts mosquitoes.
4. Place the funnel part, upside down, into the other half of the bottle, taping them together if desired.
5. Wrap the bottle with something black, leaving the top uncovered, and place it outside in an area away from your normal gathering area. (Mosquitoes are also drawn to the color black.)

Change the solution every 2 weeks for continuous control.

So what kills them and what stops them flying back out ?

I'm guessing they would typically try to fly upwards!
but they need to fly down to the neck to make it out??
soon run out of puff and rest in the water??

RIP

cheers

Yeast + Suger = CO2.
Only plants thrive in it.

can you substitute the yeast for vegemite?

We have done this with vegemite in the past  and it catches heaps of flies (not sure about mozzies)

Yeast + Suger = CO2.
Only plants thrive in it.

Yeast + Sugar = CO2, and it produces alcohol through the fermentation of the yeast at the right temps.

May need to run it through a still though to condense the alcohol.

Interesting concept though, I hadn't thought of using my homebrew kit as mozzie trap.

Love the idea.  So simple.  I'll have to give it a go on our trip.
