We are setting up a travel blog for an upcoming 3 month trip and are keen to get peoples feedback on private versus public access. Public access blogs seem easier to set up because people don't need to register, or be invited to join. However, has anyone who has set up a public access blog had problems with trolls etc. I guess you have to be a lot more careful about not letting people know where you live - nothing like an advertisment for an empty house.

We've got a public one with blogger.com and not had any issues in 2+ years. You can set up the page how you like it, so if you didn't want any comments you can leave them off the site. Even if you did allow comments, you can still nuke anything via your email account before it goes live if you set it up that way.
In reality, your spot on the Internet is a grain of sand in a desert! Pretty much the only people interested in your site will be...those that are interested in your site ;D
Just get on there, and write what you're comfortable with. There is no need to give away where you live, even create a new email address that is only associated with your site if you're more comfortable with that. And only give the site address to those that you want, but it's kind of cool to see that someone from Outer Mongolia has read your blog, and 3 from Turkmenistan!

We used Wordpress for the blog of our big trip last year and found it great. You can have it private or public and we did all our posts via the iPhones. The only thing is if you wanted to have it as a private blog all those you invite to follow you I think have to sign up to Wordpress but if public they didn't
