Title: Tirerack - told to stop shipping
Post by: Bird on January 11, 2013, 09:16:12 AM
Apparently Tirerack have been told they are no longer to ship to Australia certain brands of tyres.

Although they still have their page up http://tires.tirerack.com/tires/Shipping%20To%20Australia/ (http://tires.tirerack.com/tires/Shipping%20To%20Australia/)
Bloke at work asked for a quote and got told Australian Tyre importers have been complaining and they cant do it - sort of...

Anyone else had issues?

So, looks like more people will use companies like Shipto (freight forwarders with US Address) to send tyres.

When will Australian Companies learn to become competitive instead?

Toyo are funny

"The implication
The result for the consumer is often a cheaper alternative"

Translated: Hurts our wallet if you import the same tyre from USA that we import.

Plenty of talk on whingepool about shipto.com and others.

Apparently Continental Pirelli, Yoko, Hankook are the biggest whingers - companies nobody would use anyway!

You can understand why people do it

2 18x8 O.Z. Alleggerita HLT BLK PAINT In Stock $385.00 $770.00
2 235/40R-18 Kumho Ecsta XS XL In Stock $156.00 $312.00
2 265/35R-18 Kumho Ecsta XS XL In Stock $222.00 $444.00
2 18x10 O.Z. Alleggerita HLT BLK PAINT In Stock $410.00 $820.00
Shipping: $148.05
$2,494.05

plus the above shipping $270 + $254 = US$3018 delivered

i didnt waste my time calling too many aussie stores.
i called one store ... it was a headache just to get the price .. about AU$6000.
(each rim was just under $1k each .. and tyres were $450 each)

so about $3000 saving.

From Tirerack

Since the list of tires that are restricted to Australia is so long, its easier to tell you the brands we CAN export to you. Those include:

Goodyear
 Dunlop
 Hoosier
Kumho
 Power King
 Sumitomo

so only 2 brands you'd consider using.

well if you have a drag car Im sure the Hoosier's would be ok.
 ;D

I bring in allot of stuff from the states, Car audio and specific performance parts. Honestly Freight forwarding can be a B!itch!
But If you find a good one then keep them. I have a mate in Florida who sends all my stuff for me.
It is usually allot cheaper to send to him and for him to send to me than what it costs for the company to send direct to me.
Allot of American companies offer free domestic shipping, so as long as whoever is sending your items international is on the ball it's usually cheaper.

Prices are all on the site.

Go to the product tab up the top,
Search type, (I went by size)
Then proceed to results.
List of tyres will show up with pricing.

Sexy Muzza (Squalo) on this forum imported 8 BFG's and saved $800
It works but more for 17+inch tyres.. for some reason 15-16's don't get the saving as much.

Read the instructions here:

These tyre companies can jump up and down as much as they like they will never stop it from happening. They have been complaning for years. They are the ones making the big money here not the resellers. Crooks  >:(

Just find the local tyres guys that are already parrell importing. I picked up four 245/70-16 BFG ATs for $239 each before Xmas. Cheapest, JAX, Bob Jane etc was $290 down from $320 after being squeezed because of the Parrell price.

A lot of Aussie bikers were importing tyres from Jake Wilson in the US and saving ridiculous amounts of money, and JW got the heat put on them and did the same thing - put out the info that you could no longer buy from them if you were Down Under.

However nothing really changed, and after a while it seemed to be business as usual.

I don't think the local importers who complain and push this stuff through have a leg to stand on - the FTA pretty much says that US suppliers can sell here as long as they meet tax and duty requirements. A set of tyres I got from Tirerack even came with an A4 sheet that detailed their right to sell to Australia under the FTA,  I will find that doc and scan and post it up here.

And thanks for calling me sexy Bruce, even Mrs Squalo doesn't call me that anymore but hell I still am!  ;D

Went to a large reseller the other day to get new tyres on my sons car. Whilst there we asked him about a new set of BFG AT's for the Cruiser. $380 per corner was his price. Rang Tempe Tyres and they quoted $280. Told large reseller I was going with Tempe and saving $400, he priced matched then said something interesting.

Not sure if it is right or not but this guy told me the tyres sold out of the USA have a different compound in them to those sold in Australia and are not as suitable for Australian conditions.

Considering he had already price matched and got the sale I can see no reason for him to feed me any BS.

Does anyone know if this is true or not?

It depends on the tyre.
Most tyres we get ARE imported in one way or another.
THE ONLY tyres that will be substantially different are European/american "winter tyres" as it's not normally just the tread that is different.

To say for instance a KM2 is different from an aussie KM2 is absurd. When I used to work at beaurepairs many moons ago, when our BFG supplier didn't have any instock, it was quicker for him to order straight from the states from what stock they had.

Cheers

Be aware you will not have any insurance if your insurance co. can prove the tyres were not imported by an AU importer and therefore have no warranty in AU. Pretty hard for them to do unless you run a size not available in AU.

I bought my KM2s from Tirerack, BUT I used my own importer. I had Tirerack ship to a US address and then I got them into a container.

So, if you want those other brands its nit game over. Just buy BFG and get with the program would be my other advice.

Actually all tyres are imported now. Only remoulded and retreaded cases are re manufactured here since Bridgestone shut their doors a few years ago.
