Title: iFail Mapping...
Post by: Bird on December 10, 2012, 11:45:22 AM
Is the mapping on the iFails really that bad?? Although this is not new with mapping software to fail, people punch in "Fastest route" and they can go to some scarey places.

Motorists beware: use the new Apple Maps at your peril.

Police are "extremely concerned" at a large snafu in the program – tourists who use the new operating system iOS 6 to get to Mildura are actually being sent 70 kilometres away to a national park.

Several motorists have become stranded in the Murray-Sunset National Park, where the mercury has recently risen to 46 degrees.

"Police are extremely concerned, as there is no water supply within the park ... making this a potentially life-threatening issue," a police spokeswoman said.

"Some of the motorists located by police have been stranded for up to 24 hours without food or water and have walked long distances through dangerous terrain to get phone reception."

Police tests on the mapping system confirm that it identifies Mildura as being in the middle of the park.

Officers have contacted Apple and hope to have the problems resolved soon.

The spokeswoman said that anyone travelling within Victoria "should rely on other forms of mapping until this matter is rectified".

Apple has been contacted for comment.

Natural selection?
You ignore road signs, drive into an area, then wander off into remote bush to make a phone call because your car is not where you want it to be?  Seriously >:(

thats the main issue.. people believe these things are the wholey grail of "how to get home"... Thats why theres a permit scheme on Mt skene now.. Some bloke got stuck up there in a 2wd car for 2 days in the snow!!!! He put in "quickest route home" to somewhere like Sale and it sent him over the mountain...

We came across 2 cars in the middle of somewhere they shouldnt have been sitting on a speed that you could run faster than for klms.. they were in way over their heds.

Young girl rolled her car on a dirt road out our way not long ago.  Was blindly following her GPS which led her onto a dirt road to nowhere.  Being inexperienced, she swerved and rolled.  Luckily she lived.

This is the main reason I haven't update my iphone4 because I use the map function quite a lot here in Perth as a linesman I need to know the best way from point A to B without seven page changes precariously balanced on my lap. Just imagine how happy the public would be if I mentioned I had to keep pulling over to change pages in my map book lol. Need to get me a bl@@dy cheapo navman of sorts me thinks.

Agree 100%, for pucks sake these people are in control of a car and have a licence, if they are really that stupid or that incompetant a driver then they should not need the mapping function because they should not be in control of a car.  I am sick of this I am stupid, poor me attitude. If your that stupid, stay home and eat dry weetbix and cold water, that should be safe enough, oh hang on, you might forget to have the water with the weetbix and choke to death.

Drivers are getting worse in the country..
I just had some mail order rag on the freeway sitting on 85 in 100 zone putting on her make up in the right lane oblivious to the 20-30 cars she was holding up - its her right to put on her bog while driving....
So I sat there while the 15-20 odd cars went up the inside of her and round her, thinking she'd get the message... but alas no.. So I changed lanes, went round her all of a sudden she could manage 110 like it wasnt there in here DIesel X5 to have her start flashin lights, blastin of the horn, waving fists and purses...

So I thought I'll play, so pulled back into middle lane. So she starts hurling abuse at me, I smiled at it (she was probably 15 and didnt have her 99yr old sugar daddy with her this time).
I suppose blowing her a kiss, waving and laughing at her may have enraged her a little more, but I think the fact that she nearly ran up the arse of a van as she was too busy abusing me changed her tune. Sadly she didn't pull up at the red light , went thru it and the red light camera went off  ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D I had so much to say to her. :(

Come on Lost. I'm not a moderator by you really need to watch your language on here. There is absolutely no need at all to describe someone the way you just did.

Our 4wd club had a trip a few weeks back and one member was coming a little later.
He had followed his navigation system and ended up off road and in a bog hole.
He had a great time but we were surprised the the Navman gave him the instructions to go on an unsealed road.

We told him never trust a woman when giving directions.  ;D

Anyone in SE Qld would be familiar with the OS tourists in a hire car that ended up in the mud flats at Cleveland whilst trying to get to Stradbroke Island because their in car navigation system told them to keep driving "straight ahead". I guess they were too busy looking at the GPS to be bothered looking where they were actually going.

Obviously you didn't see what was written before it was edited. As for my avatar, well if you find Mr Bean offensive you would have been horrified by earlier, now edited comment. Not trying to be a hero, just want to see the forum stay clean for the younger viewers.

Used the I map thingy for the first time yesterday in Brisbane, worked faultlessly and as it has voice guidance turn by turn I no longer need to pay the rental companies $10 a day extra. I always hit over view and check the route on any GPS. I am NOT a big fan of the iPhones but that part worked okay.

But as above comonsense is not used by people driving today.

This is the main reason I haven't update my iphone4

Or we could all just stop being sheep and thinking "Apple is the be all to end all" and get android phones (with google maps preinstalled).

Just saying

(as an apple hater my comment is null and void)
