I want to replace the OME tyres that came with the D.Max (Bridgestone Dueler HT) first I was going to get a new set of rims and fit a set of Cooper AT3's, but starting thinking that would be a waste as I would get lazy and never use the ome one's. So my man at Tyrepower does not want to trade, but the guy at Bob Jane will, at $140 a tyre, so I can not buy Coopers there so am now looking at a couple of other brands and now need you guys to help with your opinion, as long as you have used these tyres.
Ok first one is the Yokohama A/T-SGO12, $344 (size 265/65R17) next Pirelli ATR $299, the Falken A/T 01 Wildpeak $310. Also thought of the Kumho AT KL78 at $260.
So the worst they will cop is the trip to the Kimberley next year, after that I do not think I will be getting to far off the beaten track, so thanks in advance.

G'day Bruce ,
I have the Pirelli Scorpions on the Jeep - Great road tyre - good off-road tyre but lousy in the sloppy stuff ..
So if you intend to stay away from soft mud they are fantastic...

My Yokohama AT have been great on the Cruiser and I can recommend them but I would like to see the price come down a bit. I bought 275 70r 16 for $280.00 but maybe the 17 are a dearer tyre.

Thanks Mr Mandrake, while I am here what size solar panel would be good to fit on roof bars that are 1280 mm wide? The D.Max has roof rails and I am thinking a set of bars and fit a panel to them and run the cable into the tube where the second battery will be as to the Waeco 80, thanks mate.

Hi Trevor, the size of the tyre seems to make a lot of difference these days, thanks for your input.

Toyo tyres are ment to be good as well, but you only can get them at tyrepower.
You could allways just sell your old tyres on ebay or something.
-
If you are heading to the Kimberly i would be looking at BFG A/T or M/T, the rocks on the road there are hard on everything and replacement tyres there are expensive. I curently run Khumo MTs but havent been on rocky roads yet. Just my 2 bobs worth.
Good luck with it.

If you've got low Km's on your originals I'd try selling them privately, perhaps even one by one even, and buy the tyres you want rather than be limited by who'll trade yours.
There are plenty of grey nomads driving utes just like yours that would be happy to pick up some near new tyres at a discount.
-
I too have one [OEM?] tyres for sale, but everyone wants a bargain don't they? So I might do what BJ says, sell one at a time.

I've had the Yoko's before. very good on and offroad, wet or dry only limited by deep mud otherwise I'd have them on my Cruiser. the Kumho KL78 also gets some very good reviews as a no nonsense all terrain at fair price. My boss has just replaced a set of 18" Falkens ST Z04's on a 100series cruiser V8. driven very hard on bitumen only still made 86,000 k's....I was suprised at that. no idea about Pirellis.
I currently roll on Goodyear Duratracs, very happy with them after a 7,000 km heavily loaded trip to cape york. No punctures, no boggings, very little wear. They performed well on all surfaces but they really excel offroad.

When i ran a Bob Jane store in Brisbane, if we had too, we would get a set of 4 Coopers off the guys that had them and still do the deal anyway.
Understand, we weren't suppose to be doing it, but the Tyrepower shop up the road would sell ém to us at a sort of ok price, but then, by the time the trade in was factored in, it didn't work out too bad and everyone was happy.
If you don't do anygood, try Knackers at the Maroochydore outlet.
No promises, but he might be able to arrange sumfin for ya. Worth the asking the question, the worst thing that might happen is you get a no.
-
Thanks for all the input guys, Yokohama's are at the top at the moment. Wish I was game to put the near new set of MT ATZ's 265/75R16' on from the MU for the trip, but I bet I would have an accident and then have no insurance.
Anyway thanks again.

Ive got Yoko AT Geolanders on our 100 series as well. As Roo says, they are a very good Tyre in the wet or dry, on or off road. Nice and quiet. I can certainly recommend them as well.
cheers

Thanks Stue, thinking of doing Kilkivan next month around the 24th interested?

Hi Bruce,
I think we should be able to make the 24th. Sounds good.

I had Yokohama a/t on my Pajero. They were great on the black stuff and sand but when we did the strez and Oodnadatta track we had ALOT of tyre issues. We did 8000km and about 5000km on the dirt and we had 4 punctures and also 1 side wall. When I got home there was alot of damage from the rocks to all of my Yokohamas and replaced them with BFG a/t. I only had 25000km on them. I did the cape this year with the BFG and they were great
-
My guess is that the Yokahamas were P type whereas the BFGs are definitely LT. There are many so called AT tyres that are actually P type tyres with chunky tread or as the Americans would say "aggressive tread". This is even true for the same model tyre, for example with Micky Thompson STZs in 16", there is the P235/70R16 a P type and the LT245/70R16 an LT. Both have exactly the same tread pattern.

I reckon the lads comments on trying to flog the old tyres on eBay or gum tree would be the go. I recall you mentioned the size as 265/65 x 17. If this is correct, you will be hard pressed to go past Cooper Light Truck AT3 tyres. They seem to be a great all round tyre and I love them on my Prado, currently looking at replacing the camper tyres with them, when they are stuffed.
-
ebay might be the go when we wanted tyres to match our dmax for the trailer we looked on there but there were none available so just had to ask trailer guy to get same size rims for us. So they might sell
-
The yokohamas are a great tyre, but I would have a look around at what the independent tyre shop could offer you?
Im pretty luck here as my local independent dealer is actually a maxxis dealer, so I get great deals on maxxis tyres.
Independents are usually more than happy to trade in your tyres if they are worth it for them, I traded mine in and a set of 285/75/16 muddies only cost me $500. :cup:
I have generally run the Maxxis tyres on my other halfs cars and as all terrains and I haven't been able to fault them as yet. Mud, snow, dirt, sand and bitumen they were great.
Cheers

Another old topic reviver.
Roo, how are the Duratracs holding up?
No problems with the "weaker" sidewalls?

Isuzumu how did you go with your tyres i am also looking for a 265/65/17 but am being told they are illegal as they need to be mounted on a 7.5 inch rim and the D max rim is only 7 inches. You can apparently go to a 265/70/17 but i think the jump would be to much
I am currently being reccomended a cooper At3 in 245/70/17
Any imput would be appreciated

A great size
IF YOU PLAN ON TOWING A FLOAT IN THE SYDNEY MARDI GRAS!
-
Gee thanks Dazzler i am happy and wanting to go bigger but a) dont want it illegal and b) dont want to compramise towing ability by gearing adjustments to bigger tyres
-
245 70 r17 is the same diameter as the 265 65 17.
-
Have you looked at the Bridgestone d697?
Currently have just replaced my geolanders with these. Very happy so far.
-
I sold my 5 17" grandcraps with 35km's on them for $850 to a bloke I saw with bald tyres on a 120 Prado.
My old man just sold his new 18" grandcraps for $880.
He went the 697 and I went BFG AT.
I dont know what the cost of the 697's were
I got the BFG's for $325 a corner, so the whole exercise cost me $770.
Goes in for a lift tomorrow.
Cheers Nomad.
-
A 265/70/17 will fit on the 7" rim..
The increase in dia will have only a very slight affect on gearing ( but may make your speedo actually read a lot closer to actual speed )
As for an allround A/T tyre.......really can't go past BFG A/T.....
Compared to the Cooper ATR and MT ATZ I had on previously, the BFG's are quiet on the road, safe in the wet, and are pretty good offroad as well..
-
Have the Cooper ST Maxx. Brilliant AT tyre.
Anywho, irrespective of which breed, if you planning any harsh gravel touring, you'd be mad not having a LT construction tyre.
That is all. ;D
-
Do yourself a favour and have a look at the Dick Cepek FC2. Brilliant strong tyre.
