Looks like a great show - BEING FIRST IS FOREVER - Sept 30, 1pm on TEN, showing the reenactment of the first vehicular crossing of the Simpson Desert, will be aired to commemorate the 50th Anniversary of the event.
Geologist and explorer Dr Reginald Sprigg, his wife Griselda and their two children, Doug (then seven) and Margaret (10), made the pioneering trip from Andado Station to Birdsville in 1962 in a short wheelbase Nissan Patrol G60, ahead of a small retinue of other four wheel drive vehicles.
The Nissan Patrol became not only the first, but also the only vehicle to complete the Spriggs’ gruelling 12-day crossing of the 176,500 square kilometre desert and its 1,000 parallel sand dunes on that epic journey.

Thanks for posting this Kevin, we`re looking forward to watching it. Should be very interesting to see how it was 50 years ago, compared to todays travel with all the innovations in camping and vehicles.
Cheers, Robyn.

bugger missed it. does TEN have a replay service like ABC iView?
-
Was a good watch. Even in spite of Pat Callinan. Was good to see what the Simpson looks like for those of us still to do it.
-
I think the history of it was great, but the way it was told, well , i left about half way through to go wash my car

Very interesting what passes as a documentary, more like a romaced advertisement for nissan and pat.
Seriously, the area was settled, let alone explored a long time before 1960.

It was the first vehicular crossing, which is worth celebrating isn't it?
I agree though, it wasn't really a documentary. And why was Pat in a small dark office almost whispering? It was kind of odd and looked liked it had been slapped together in a rush.

Nissan add interrupted by other adds. Lost me when they were comparing the g60 and the current model, powerful and reliable, obviously not the same poxy 3.0 litre i drive at work. I also liked the bit where pat said he could not follow the same original line across the desert because of rules about driving offroad then half of the footage is the g60 driving over vegetation.
Ha, I was sucked in to watching it I suppose.

I thought it was interesting enough. Lacked some substance but I guess there is only so much you can cram into the time provided.
I'm sure Pat, Doug and Margaret would have loved to have shown it in a lot more detail but obviously it wasn't possible with the end production time.
Anyway what a great husband and wife team, taking the little g60 crammed with gear with 2 kids sharing the bench seat across the Simpson, let alone the trip getting up to the simpson :) Personally I think it was brave, adventurous and I can really relate to what they must have been feeling at the time. Good on them.

Wish I'd known it was on. Let's hope they replay it soon.
