Title: Second Hand Goldstream what to look for?
Post by: Sickgm on September 13, 2012, 09:11:28 AM
Hey guys,

About to take a look at a secondhand goldstream wing. It is an off road version and was just wondering what I should be looking out for?

It is a 2005 model And has been in storage for a little while.

You should be looking at mine :)

If it is independant suspension make sure the wheels are straight otherwise they are generall pretty good, just look out for water stains, dints etc.

Sorry may seem like a silly question but if it is a off road version aren't they all independent suspension?

Nope, it is an option. The year you're looking at will be a Preston chassis version, the later models use the Vehicle Components suspension.

Thanks d4d, I assume the Preston chassis is still a quality and solid set up? Or should I be looking for independent type set up?

Main use is for national parks, some fire trails and corrugated roads.

I don't think I could afford your set up d4d....

The Preston chassis independant suspension is a good setup unless it is overloaded. For your usage scenario I don't think it would matter that much.

When I was originally looking for a second hand Goldstream The best set up one I came across was D4D's but a show special saw me going new.  Twist his arm enough and you may get him to part with it, good buy.

D4D is right bout the suspension option mine is still and off road model but has a simple square axle with leaf / shocks combination. Suits me fine for what we do and made it half way around australia in 2010 so must be OK

Probably just check the usual suspects i will list some of the things we found over the trip with ours but please keep in mind this was after 5 months and 20,000 of continual use.

1. We had to get a small repair to the front bed as some of the stitching was coming undone ( i think i was stretching it to much)
2. I had the thermostat switch for the fridge fan replaced with a simple on off unit as the thermostat switch kept failing.
3. If you have the grill inside there is a little heat guard that slides in and out to protect the knobs this fell out due to corrugations and you have to take half the grill apart to re- seat it
4. The silicone around where the sink sullage pipe cracked so i got dust in the cuboard fixed with expanda foam in a can
5. This was the major 1 the water fill hose is 2 pieces and i shoved the hose in to hard one night and the pieces seperated i did not know this and instead of water filling up the tank i had water coming in the van. This was fixed with glue and screw clamps and now i only fill up during the day so i can see what im doing.

Apart from that it just gets its annual service and all good i still love it

1 thing to look out for, and this applies to all dometic 3 way fridges I guess, is the latching mechanism. Ours was useless from day one and easily releases on anything half resembling a bumpy road. First trip got to camp site, opened van to find most of the fridge contents mixed up with the rest of our gear and a not cold fridge. Fixed by adding a elastic latch ( like evakool used to use on their eskies) and attaching a knob to the front of the fridge. Also doubles up as a way to stop the kids opening and closing the fridge all the time.

Ok so I checked out the wing 2 and it has been in storage for the last two years. Not clean and I would say well used. Anyway got it for a good price and leaves me some change to clean it up and add some goodies. Was impressed with the suspension set up, is this the standard or optional set up for a off road goldstream ? (http://img.tapatalk.com/d/12/09/15/atusa4ub.jpg)

Nice work, that's the Preston chassis suspension, don't overload it and it will serve you well.

Well was due to pick up the goldstream next week and I have had to give it a miss....
The wife went out and put a deposit on a off road coromal caravan.

I think she wanted a full van from day 1.

So there is a cheap wing 2 in Wahroonga, needs a good clean but at 13.5 I think it is a good buy.

Anyone interested I can pass on the number.
