Title: Bugger....advice needed
Post by: jimc1 on August 14, 2012, 08:44:00 PM
I have spent months looking for the right camper that would fit 5. I thought I found it..Tambo Omeo. I almost got my wife on board ready to order one..with a few extras...and they shut down! Bugger!

The campers that came distant 2nd and 3rd due to price was Complete Campsite uluru or Southern Cross Canvas road king.

So I am back to the drawing boards and need some advice. Spend price approx $25k

We need a walkup model that has comfortable room for 2 sets of bunks in the main tent and all the crap that goes along with 3 young kids.

I thought lockers around the camper would be good to stow away frequently used stuff...and besides they should keep dust and mud off the bits kept inside them.

I swing away boat rack would be another necessity, to stow 5 bikes and kayak.

The plan is to do the circuit and many side trips over the next many years.
I hope I am not asking for the utopian camper that simply no longer exists.

Any advice appreciated

I'm not sure where you are... But would 100% recommend George @ Follow Me Campers http://followmecampers.com.au/camper-models-2/the-frankland-explorer-ltd-26950/ (http://followmecampers.com.au/camper-models-2/the-frankland-explorer-ltd-26950/)

I had a fully enclosed custom version of this made. I was also very close to ordering a Omeo but went with this one. Bellow is my build so far is here. I also managed to keep it under your total budget too.

Good luck!

A Mountain Trail Escape is cheaper than an Uluru, but still more than your $25k.

Theyre a walk up camper.  Their workmanship is A1.

Unfortunately I cant afford one.

Try central coast campers, they are a copy of the complete campsite as the bloke used to work for them and they are in your price bracket.
No affiliation just have a couple of mates that went down the same road, 1 of them flew up to the Brisbane show settled on a complete campsite which are made on the central coast then I told him about central coast campers which he drives past several times a day he ordered one the following week and saved $15-$20 thousand

Start surfing.

I'd say Trackabout. Never heard a bad word about them - ever.

Jimboomba Daintree Staircase ( I think Muz has one - Squalo) $19,000

But having said that, just hang around, there are used ones out there for many thousands cheaper if you wait.

Thought I might give an update of campers I have found that kind of fit the requirements.

Explorer - Wentworth
Great Aussie Campers - Wollemi
Follow Me Campers - Frankland

Anyone got anything to say about the Wollemi or Wentworth?

and for a laugh I thought I would contact Jeff from Edgell Fabrications. This is the fellow who built the trailers/kitchens/boxes for Tambo.
It seems he will begin production of campers on the side. He is just sorting out the canvas side of things.

He reckons it will be sorted sometime this side of christmas. It is a real shame that Tambo was not sold on as a going concern, as I for one would be keen on a career change. The only downside is I would spend too much time "field testing".

so the Edgell version of the Tambo Omeo may be back on the option list.

So what is wrong with these?

They are well known and never heard a bad word on Complete Campsite (one bloke infact just bought his second)trailers on the board..  Also SCross have had a top name for well over 30 odd years

You could do much worse than either of those.

I recommend you go out to the camping show this weekend and have a look around
