Title: ARB Swags
Post by: GGV8Cruza on June 22, 2012, 10:59:45 AM
Looks as though the roof top tents are now coming down to the ground. There has been some photos released on facebook. They look great and when they come out a replacement purchase may be made.

Sam could you possible put up some info for us??

I think the big question is how do you get the gal in the photos to come along too.

Sam, I can see a terrific retail oppotunity for ARB. Bring a ute load of swags and that lovely young lady along to Mace's big bash.

Being serious once more, they do look well designed, with all external poles and with lateral spreader bars too. I think they should have included a boot flap as standard, possibly more helpful than the hat saver.

Agree they look good, don't know about the seperate little boot tent, looks a bit lardy daa for me and I can imaging the ribbing from the mate's. The only other thing would be air flow. I camp in hot conditions regularly and find that full length mesh down both sides in addition to windows in both ends makes it possible to catch any breeze that is about. Essentially my current one becomes a big mesh/mozzy tent when fully opened up.

Some good features though.

They are flash ones, not my cup of tea but I am sure there is a big market. How tight do they roll up, got a picture Sam (and hand rolled with bedding not factory rolled please)?

Question for the group, when does a swag become a tent?  I would call that a tent ;D

it's related to "when does a camper become a caravan?"

my answer is... when you need extended mirrors...

agreed, looks flash and could be a good bit of gear but thats a tent to me.
As soon as you need to add poles its a tent not a swag, IMHO.

Yep its a small tent, about the size of my hiking tent, but rolls up about 4 times the size, weighs a heap more, and looks like it would take longer to set up.

Small tent?? Nah, of course it's a swag.  Must be ARB bashing time again  ::)

Anyway call it what you want, I like it... apart from the chihuahua tent (or is that a swag as well?).  Although, I can see my eldest two trying to get the youngest to sleep in it.  ;D

We only have studio shots of them rolled up at this stage. They have the mattress inside but no other bedding.

Comfortably rolled (not vacuum packed), they will fit inside a box with a 37cm height and depth.

Cheers, Sam.

Spot on mate. As long as you like it that's all that counts . That boot bag is hilarious though.

No ones bashing anyone, I said it looks good, just not for me and asked what in general people consider the line to be between a swag and a tent ???

Thanks Sam, they are smaller than I expected. I find that with both my swags I can never get them to roll as tight as when they were new even without bedding.

It's alright Burnsy, I didn't take it as bashing. I can certainly see where the small tent reference comes from . Just one you can still roll your mattress and bedding up in...

Cheers, Sam.

Just stirring Burnsy... (don't want to upset my QuickFist supplier! ;))  They don't call me 'LJ Stirry McStir' for nothing.

Besides, I don't need one... I got one free when I bought my lockers from the US.

More stirring  ;D

I think the boot swag needs a cushion for your boots, here's one I found...

i'd call it a small tent also, first thing i thought was look at all the tent poles that hold it up. not bashing the ARB product, i just think swags are getting to complicated now, but then my swag is just a large a canvas bag unlike the modern versions of today....lol

I have always related a swag to something you can unroll, throw on the ground, and get in for a good nights shuteye.  These new swags look like something that takes a fair bit of preparation, hence a tent in reality, not a swag.

Geeze that means I got the flash one, two bits of canvas with a zip up each side

I've got two swags, both use poles. One, the OzTrail, is fiddly and takes possibly longer to setup than my old camper due to the nature of the poles. My new swag, from Kulkyne Kampers, is bigger but easier to setup due to the superior poles and attachments for same. Both my swags have the middle (of three) hoop inside the canvas. This where the ARB design is better, as it's much easier to put up with all the pole hoops on the outside.

I had the single piece of canvas swag, gave it Laith's son. It was OK and gave me great service and many good times, but much harder to use in the rain than the hoop swags, and I hated having the canvas sitting on my face. Also, it didn't have mossie nets, so I had to rig one up over it in the summer.

To suggest the hoop style or not swags is like saying live axle constant 4wd vehicles which use a switch instead of a lever aren't real 4wbies. They're simply an evolution, using knowledge, technology and materials now available.

yes it's evolution, if that's what someone wants then go for it i'm not knocking it just calling it as i myself see it. i am happy to unroll my swag and climb into it without the need for poles or mozzie nets, the rest is not needed for me. one hoop at the end of the swag to keep it off someones face i can still equate with the name swag, but numerous poles involved in it's erection makes it a tent for me, even if it is shaped like a swag.
the question was asked and that's where i draw the line, others can call them what they like.

Are they Australian made?

The swags are manufactured in China, in the same factory we've been successfully manufacturing our range of rooftop tents. We've committed significant resources over the past 12 months to ensure an extremely high quality and consistent product, that meets the high standards ARB products are renowned for. The same factory supplies tents for the military in several European countries. The canvas (450gsm/13oz) has been fully tested in accordance with applicable Australian standards, including the cone test.

Cheers, Sam.

The CONE test, is that the one were they get a couple of hippies inside it smoking bongs. Now theres a job with perks and a bad case of the munchies.

I had a look at one of these today in an ARB store, the quality and design look pretty good. Quick and easy to set up as well.

I reckon I might get the boot tent for the minature poodle  ;D
