Title: Rant - Generator's NOT permitted !!!
Post by: lockyer on May 22, 2012, 10:22:12 AM
Why bother having any rules at all !!

At a spot I enjoy camping at, there is no power, it has limited sites for Ct's and caravan's. There is a large sign as you enter stating "Generator's NOT permitted" and again when you fill in your registration it is on the form plus it's on the back of the tag you have to display on your tent but that rule must only apply to us clown's who have solar.
To make it worst another caravan shows up and they pull out there generator as well and decide if they can then we can too!!!
I speak to the ranger and he tells me he has spoken with them about it but if the genee not running when he comes along there nothing he can do >:D

I must hand it to this couple even after I let them know at 7pm Saturday night they could turn it off or I'll do it for them, they got up Sunday morning and come 8 am lets start the thing again and then went fishing leaving it running... >:D

And we all jump up and down when places get closed down......I wonder why   ???

Rant over....

Should have pissed in the fuel tank, or filled it with silastic.

Even better, un plug it and cut the plug off the cord.

Cut the extension into 10 pieces.  Like the ranger, if they don't see it, there's nothing they can do about it.

Hi,
use a lead pencil to draw a line from the top of the plug to the base.
It will be very hard to detect, and no amount of pulling on the cord will start the damn thing unless they clean the mark off or change the plug.

cheers

Too obvious!

Unscrew oil filler cap half a turn or so.  Hopefully it wont have an oil alert!  >:D

The user albeit annoying may have a legitimate medical reason for running the genny. I'd simply switch it off rather that disabling it.

Apologies if anyone took offence - non meant.

We need a "toungue in cheek" icon.

The main issue is the use of a genny in a non generator area.  if someone has special needs for one, then they should plan accordingly.

No offence taken, if this topic was in the Electrical section rather than the General section well then you'd have a fight on your hands  ;D

That is so true d4d our son gets bad asthma at times and we used to take a nebuliser with us ,now we have since bought a 12v portable one ,now imagine if you got back to camp and the boy needed treatment, how would the CLOWNS that cut the cord feel when they see the little fellow gasping for air
cheers

Cutting the cord doesn't disable it.  It just means they'd have to run the genni right next to their sick son.  (who they left at camp while they went fishing all day)

And if I had a sick son, I'd make sure I had a backup plan than to reply on a working genni.

I am an Insulin dependant Diabetic and when I travel I have to carry supplies kept to below 8deg C and I don't have to much problem with refrigeration normally. I have solar and 240volt supply, but as every one knows it does rain, systems some times fail so my backup is a quiet Honda Genset. As you can understand loss of my insulin can be very serious so keep this in mind when you cut the lead you could be causing some body a lot of grief. Think before you act.

Ps I also have sleep apnea which is another burden on the 12volt system.

It says no generators allowed as you drive in and also on the form, if you had half a brain you would go somewhere else and run your generator, simple really in my view or ask permission from the campground owner, they may be able to put you somewhere your not going to affect others that don't need generators.

Why do inconsiderate people think they can just do whatever they bloody well want, inconsiderate people ****me2tears >:D

Is it so hard to ask ???

You're not my wife are you ;)

She's got the same conditions as you!

And we've got similar thinking - 240v then 12v solar then backup gen if SHTF

Those who are sick and need a geni to survive, and then camp in a non-geni camp ground are just making an early nomination for a darwin award.  It's your own fault/kama if your geni fails.

I found the same issue at Martin Bend in Berri, you are allowed to use a geni up until 8pm.

Inconsiderate couple in a caravan next to us were obviously on a very long trip. They had portable washing machines and all manner of other 240 volt appliances. They were watching late night movies until about 11pm each evening or had the washing machine running with the generator chugging away the whole time. Didn't give a damn about any other campers in the campground. I'm sure they could read the sign at the entrance just as well as I could (I fink).

Problem is, do you risk an altercation if you remind them of the conditions of entry into the campground and ruin your whole trip, or just suck it up and drink more. I opted for the latter, and still had a good time. It does stay in your memory though about whether you will visit a site again.

The biggest problem is there no one is there to police it. A courtesy pardon me but do you mind turning it off cannot hurt but some people take offence to that.

I use a generator sometimes but abide by the rules and always ask anyone who is close by if they are happy if I run it for a while and also offer them power.

I always try and camp well away from other campers if I need to run it.

When they come back complain that someone stole you gas bottle and ask if they are missing anything?

Honestly , much ado about nothing IMO .

I dont use one but dont give a rats if others do . Seriously if you cant overlook the quiet hum of a modern genny , you are just way to sensitive .
Now , one of those screamin GMC (or whatever ) 2 bangers from Bunnings ? Thats a whole nuther story . >:D >:D >:D

Mitchell Falls, one section gennie and one section no gennies allowed. I am in the gennies allowed section. Bloke walks up and asks if he can run the gennie, I say you are allowed to. He says dad is on oxygen machine and needs it to live. Why would anyone say no, gennie allowed or no gennie allowed.

Hope my connection holds...wireless with loads of kids all gaming.

OK the couple who were using the gennee did not need it for health reasons unless not having a satellite TV and microwave oven are a health issue. I would never touch anyone else's gear, I am a licenced security officer and do love my job so I don't need the police tapping at my door. I did speak with the male of the caravan and informed him that Gennie's are not allowed because it is a nature reserve and that all the grounds are protected, his response "if places don't have power you should be allowed to use a generator" now the area that the CT's and van's are allowed in is small ie if you spoke slightly loudly you can hear what is said clearly, so it is impossible to run any gennie without everyone hearing it, in total there are 5 site's for CT's and vans to share, the other issue was that because this person/s used his gennie another van that arrived Saturday afternoon also started there gennie but after the ranger spoke with them they left the camp ground.
All my wife and I wanted was to sit by our fire enjoying a cold drink and watch the night skies for satelites and to spot some of the night time locals who visit the camp sites - possums and bandicoots.

Cheers

I found the same issue.  It does stay in your memory though about whether you will visit a site again.

Agreed.   I don't wish to intrude on anyone else's solitude and camping enjoyment, but if you intrude on mine, I shall get vocal and depending on the reply, things may or may not go well for you.  >:D

There are Rules that we must all abide by for the well being and longevity of the planet and to assist in the getting along of all the folks and all of the critters.

Don't start your generator if the signs says not to.

Yes.  At a very quiet and peaceful rural setting in the dead of night, where the only sounds are birds chirping and leaves falling (and possibly possums licking your BBQ plate) ... your "silent" generator JUST ISN'T ANY MORE ... no matter how far away from your own camp and, as such, closer to my camp you put it.

Kit_e

Still waiting for someone to invent the 'Generator Stealth Cover - Rural Version' that tuns the new "silent" generators noise into the hushed sounds of birds chirping and leaves falling.

Simple...don't do the wrong thing to p155 people off, & no one would need to touch your gear!

The topic & replies aren't about people just willy nilly touching/silencing/destroying etc others property, it's about a-holes who think they're special, beyond reproach & above everyone else.

I hate the intrusion of generator noise.

I ensure as much as possible that I don't intrude on the quiet enjoyment of nature, of fellow campers, and ask only that they respect my desire for quiet enjoyment.

I don't ever camp in a Generator area, so the @rseholes who do upset my quiet enjoyment are just that!

There is also the problem with late night flatulence to be contended with .

I hear you brother!  I'm sucking down a Sparkling Ale right now.

Back on topic, no generator should be just that.  If somebody had an emergency power failure, like accidental flattening of their batteries, and needed to start one up then you'd think they'd visit the neighbours (beer in hand maybe), explain, and ask if was a problem.  Not everybody cares though.

Cutting cords is completely out of order and could kill somebody if they fired the genny up without noticing.

I like to go camping in a pretty quiet place (one hour of 4wding to cover 20 km) and would be really pissed if somebody fired up a genny.  I'd probably have to put some Motorhead on to drown it out! >:D ;D

Some years back we arrived late afternoon at Gunlom campground in Kakadu in gen approved area. Rule is gen off by 2100hrs.
We have solar panels on roof of our Eagle but put out gen about 15 metres away near a bush as I wasn't sure of battery charge back then as system was new.
Set up sat etc. preparing for footy game.
We had deliberately camped right away from all others ( only about 4 other camps ).
Two blokes rocked up late afternoon and looked like plonking within twenty metres ( on the gen side ) when they could have parked a hundred away from us and everybody else in the area. I said to my wife I would warn them we had a gen and that maybe it might annoy them even though it was permitted. She said don't bother, that's their problem. Anyway me being me thought I'd do the right thing so wandered over and let these guys know the score. They looked like they weren't bothered but fortuitously they toddled off to the far side a hundred metres away.

Just on dusk a few good ol' boys turned up at their camp and they considerately provided LOUD, ;D heavy rock and yeharrring for the entire camping area until well after midnight. Fortunately the hundred metre buffer and essential earplugs made the night bearable.

Our solar setup now means we don't require gen at the times we go camping but for an extended trip I recommend taking gen along if only as a deterrent decoration. Wife ( Ms Right ), even admitted it was a good gesture make the meatheads aware of our Genny!  ;D

I think other then the noise what bother me the most is they didn't care, they weren't worried about the sign's or what the ranger said to them or the fact it was annoying myself and other's. It was I am going to use it and I don't care what anyone thinks or says.

I only hope they never go back to this place again as we have been camping there for 15 years and 2 or 3 times a year,

Thanks to everyone for your thoughts

Cheers

What I want to know is ... where is it that you are going exactly?  Being that their are often no generators there, I'd like to go myself, because a new place is always nice to visit.  Well be doing a new place this weekend and are hoping to be the only ones there.

We have a favourite in the Lockyer Valley that I'm sure you'd know about ... Glen Rock.
