I read some of the posts and titles on here and scratch my head, I struggle to see the the problem with this group or the service they are providing for the community. By the polls tanking I assume you mean theLabor government rankings in the opinion polls and I would ask how does this affect that, If you read the article it states they have been around for some three decades hardly something the current government can be blamed for creating.
I would imagine that some people view candle making and basket weaving as legitimate hobbies and would find benefit in attending these workshops, not my cup of tea but then again I wouldn't expect everyone to enjoy my pastimes or hobbies, whatever happened to live and let live, I fear we are becoming a nation of knockers, if someone doesn't hold the same views or beliefs as us we feel the need to put them down.

I think it's more activities that may interest some people to come along and be a part of the day. They seem to be preaching to the converted a bit IMO.
Good on em for doing something I spose.

It is a community event to promote sustainable living, green initiatives and energy tips are mentioned.
I see it as catering to segments of the community who may not necessarily spend much time in things such as camping forums.

its a 'grass roots' group with Fed Gov funding - the group would have sought the funding under a govt. programme. Grass roots groups do a fantastic job (most times) in educating and gaining support from local communities - think about Landcare, Coastcare etc - much of the work done under these banners was done by local groups with fed funding - if they didnt exist most people wouldnt know what the Govt was on about. I think most of the dislike of 'government initiatives' is that the everyday person cant see the relevance to them - this is where this sort of group plays its part.
Teaching to the converted? In Auburn? Its about education.

Basket weavers and candle makers tend to be earthy people who would support it anyway They are already interested. It's the people not normally interested in the environment and climate change that you need to include.

I wasn't arguing with you dazzler sorry, I agree with you, it involved activities that may interest some people to come along, and that was the point of it. I didn't think you were bagging it either. I often question the delivery mechanism of these sorts of things but heh, I'm not on the ground trying to do it, its got to be bloody hard work. Having said that, not all basket weavers are environmentalists, and I'd imagine that the people the programme is aimed at are migrants (check out the ethnic diversity of people living in Auburn, Sydney) who still practice traditional skills (maybe weaving - I dunno)(not necessarily environmentalist, basket weaving hippies) and/or want to be involved in 'community' activities to feel a part of what Oz or their community has to offer. The people its mainly targeted at, I'd imagine, may not be interested in the environment and climate change at all - may not care, know or see the relevance to them.

Its funny what interests people. I love racing rally cars and off road buggies, building camper trailers but then in my spare time I am into researching the history of civilisations and particularly how they survived (or perished) which is probably as exciting as watching paint dry to some!
