Title: UHF problem, thoughts?
Post by: Markbell on April 22, 2012, 07:47:06 PM
G'day,

I go camping  regularly with a mate of mine and ever since I installed my UHF we have had trouble communicating when we are more than say 500mtrs apart.

Here is how it works: he can hear me no problems up to 4-5 km away (even further but thats a distance we tested) but I can't hear him when further than 500mtrs.

So the question: who's issue is it likely to be , his or mine?

Marcel.

Unless you have your squelch turned all the way up, it would be him.

Thanks guys, that's a relief that it is most likely him as my unit is only 5 months old.

If he has an antenna problem, how is it that he can pick up my transmission but not transmit his?

Mate receiving a signal is a lot Easyer than effectively sending one.

Check for a short in his antenna coax

GME has had some problems with the tx circuit in some of their radios. First I'd check the antenna and connections, perhaps try another antenna. Disconnect the antenna from the back of the radio and test for continuity between the centre pin and the body of the plug, if their is continuity there its the antena or coax lead.

if everything checks out...it could be his radio internals..

my 1 1/2 yr old gme had the same problem....wouldn't transmit more than 400 m...had it repaired under warranty and all good again..

Find someone with a watt meter (bird meter) and check for a short or faulty pa model. GME had a bad batch

Hi,
we had some thing similar on a club trip, both radios were on Ch10, but one was inadvertently on Duplex.

Turned off duplex and problem solved.
