Just about ready to buy a UHF radio and just wondering where people have mounted them in their 100 series cruiser.
If you have pics that would be great.
I am looking at the Gme Tx3100 being nice and compact.
Many thanks.

No pics as the car is having a pre trip service. I have a two piece tx3520. The head unit is installed in the front overhead compartment (plastic door removed) with speaker and the main body in the rear overhead compartment of the roof console. Speaker is cut into the cover facing down. This leaves me with the middle compartment usable for sunnies etc. Speaker location is very good for noisy situations and equally I have good access to controls on the head unit which is facing diagonally down. I am quite happy with that arrangement.

My cruiser had a GME 3220 mounted on the passenger side of the console. It didn'tseem to bother the wife mounted there when it has in other cars. I've now fitted my 3440 under the dash with the mic cable coming out near the handbrake. We have 2 of the 3100 uhf's în trucks and they seem to work well. You will probably need to mount an external speaker, mine is central under the dash, to hear the uhf clearly.

Not quite a 100 series, but I am having a similar dilemma with my 120 Prado, latest thinking is going one of the GME 3540s and putting the main unit in behind the panel to the left of my left knee and putting a plug in one of the switch blanks in the console so that I can just unplug and put away when I don't need. Knowing the 100 series and 120 are similar(ish) in a lot of respects (Prado is just smaller), I would suspect you could do something similar.
Cheers

Mark,
Maybe a little off track, but I've got a GU Patrol that's short on mounting 'real estate' so I went for one of the units with the controls etc on the hand piece. Uniden UH7760NB
(http://www.uniden.com.au/RESOURCES_MAIN/images/products/pl_UH7760NB.gif)
Hand piece sits next to the leg near the brake controller and the main unit behind the dash. Sounds comes from both the hand piece and unit so you can hear 'truckie language' in stereo... (to die for!)

Hey Mark, we have this GME UHF. http://www.gme.net.au/products/radio-communications/uhf-477mhz-cb-radios/TX3340 (http://www.gme.net.au/products/radio-communications/uhf-477mhz-cb-radios/TX3340)
You just have to mount the box behind the dash and then just have the mic mounted somewhere handy.

This is where I mounted mine, with the main body under the passenger seat. Im going to mount a speaker near this unit as its abit hard to hear with the speaker in the main body under the seat. Not a problem if the speaker is fitted in the hand piece.

I was having the same debate. I ended up going with a overhead console. Also gives a bit more storage space for small items.

Have a GME TX4600 UHF and it's twin 27 MHz a GME GX300 in black mounted in a Dept of the Interior console on top off the dash in our 105 series.....console is colour coded and padded same as dash.....sticks down with double side tape to the dash so no holes. Dept of Interior make the console to suit the radio you wish to use, have a TX3100 in my work vehicle and speaker quality isn't great, bit "tinny"....needed a external speaker.

Hey McGirr,
I'm going to go the same way as Moto Mech soon, I think. I've currently got a normal DIN-sized UHF, but would like to swap it for one of the remote head units and mount the head up on the ceiling near the rear-view mirror. Either that, or one of the little TX3100 units, and hide the entire tiny unit up in the sunglass holder.
Good luck with whatever you end up with!
Cheers!

I removed the standard double DIN radio and replaced with a single DIN, then mounted the UHF underneath the stereo, in dash. Will try for a pic or two on the weekend, when I am home.

Mark, I bought one of the mic controlled oricoms from Gadget city for $180 and mounted the unit under the drivers seat. The extension cable takes the handpiece back to the dash where it is mounted just to the passenger side of the gear stick and I have a remote speaker mounted above my earhole on the plastic above the seatbelt top.
I was really keen on the GME as that is what I have had in the past but at half the price and with a three year warranty I figured I would give it a go and it was great on our recent trip. The remote speaker near my head is also great.
Cheers,
Burnsy

Got the UH7760NB installed in the center console, hidden away.
-
As many above have already said - remote unit with controls on the hand-piece which I also believe is far safer to operate. GME 3440 for me - works a treat and convenient.

<Aside>
Burnsey - how do you find the quality of the Oricom unit? Specifically around the construction of the mic/handpiece (IE, the bit that you'll be using most of the time)? Flimsy, or decent?
Supercheap have the remote-face Oricom UHF180 on sale atm for $220. The GME remote-face unit is almost $400. I don't need any features at all radio-wise, I don't even use CTCSS. All I need is to be able to select a channel and talk.
Cheers mate!

I looked at the oricom at supercheap but will probably go for this:

The quality seems fine, I have had GME handpieces fail in the past so I think it is luck of the draw. 3 year warranty so it should be fine. Gadget city is definitely cheaper than supercrap if you look at the package deals available and also if your in no hurry check their site every week for what the current UHF specials are.
Cheers,
Mike

I mounted mine here, with the 3100 being so small i do not have any issues with it rubbing on my legs etc, and easy to get to.Great little UHF I reckon.
-
I have an electrophone 2 piece uint. The remote unit mounted next to the ashtray with the main box under the centre console. The remote speaker is on top of the console next to the hand brake lever.
Works ok like that, no photo's at the moment, not at home.

I have a GME TX3440 mounted underneath the centre console with the mic mounted mounted in the same spot as Blueroo, the unit is removable for repairs if needed by removing the rear of the console with the cupholders, 4 screws from memory.
