Title: New radiator, please for a GU Patrol
Post by: Frostd on December 31, 2011, 04:00:31 PM
Teach me for looking, after trying to find the problem with my alternator/battery, I stumbled across a small leak in my radiator. It lost enough coolant, for me to notice the engine temp increase by 1-2c. When looking under the vehicle I also noticed coolant on the cross members.

The question, are radiators worth getting fixed or should I get a new one.  If I need a new one, does anybody know of a company in Northern NSW or on the Goldcoast worth dealing with?

Are the radiators on Ebay worth a try, or should I stay clear of them.

Thanks

For me a new one would be the go...

Ebay ones personally I'd steer clear of as who knows what your gettin.. if you go to bricks and mortar, you at least have somewhere to go back to if something does go toes up.

Did yours have the issue with the radiator shroud wearing through the radiator? Quite common :( Shit design.

Yep find your nearest NATRAD store or similar at least you'll have some sort of warranty.

Lost, mine did wear through the shroud, it developed a pin sized hole directly in the middle, about an inch from the bottom, at the back of the radiator.  It was enough under presure to push out enough coolant, for me to notice a 1-2 degree increase in normal driving temp.

its a bugger, its the last thing you would expect to wear through your radiator - the flammin plastic shroud :(

I have no idea of the cause, except corrosion of some type.  There is no damage to the radiator. It didnt split at a seem or weld. So no idea.  Just waiting for the shops to open tomorrow and then the phone calls will start.

Well, after all the public holidays, I made a few calls this morning. I got onto Chris at Alden Automotive (Border Batteries & Radiatores) in Tweed ;D. I got the a great deal, exactly the same as my old one.  The old radiator is nearly 10 years old, so not to bad.  Cost of the new one $310 ;D. In the down time, I flushed the system and put new hoses on.  So with a little luck and good management, things should go well for the next ten years. :cup:

Just got back from a run up to Tambourine Mountain and into Surfers. The radiator perform nicely.  Ran consistently on 76c, which is 5c less than the old radiator ran. (I have an external temp guage on the motor)
