Are dogs allowed to travel through a National Park as long as they stay in the car.
As far as I know it is OK in NSW, what about Vic Parks ???
I can't call Vic Parks, my phone at work won't do interstate, don't have a mobile either.

Not sure about Vic but in Tassie it is a no. May vary from State to State.

I just rang Parks Victoria Information Centre on 13 1963 & they said yes you may travel through but not stop.

As a general rule, no.
However, many highways (under the control of Vicroads) traverse thru National Parks. On these major road reserves, Vicroads is the land manager, not the NPS. You are ok on the highway, but by the letter of the law, once you turn of into NPS managed land you would contravene NPS regulations, even if the dog is still in the vehicle.

Yep my Dog stays at home when I go down there, which is pretty regularly :-[

All great info and thanks, BUT
We are not camping or wanting to camp in the NP or walk them in there, we are not stopping, only looking at passing through, on the way to somewhere else.
We are camping at Buckwong Hut, it says that dogs are allowed at Buckwong because it is a Historic area, but it is in the middle of the Alpine National Park, hense my question.
The reason for the question is, one of the guys on AULRO was fined $184 for having his dog in the car while travelling through a NP, thing is, he hasn't mentioned whether he let the dogs out of the car when the Ranger saw him, so I'm just being certain, this could stuff up our plans if it's true AND begs the question how do you get from one side of the park to the other if you have dogs.

Baz,
I rang them back again to see if i would get a different answer & got a different person & asked the same question. The answer was no so i emphasized the question again pointing out just travelling through not stopping! >:( She then asked someone else & said yes you can.
So maybe send them the question info@parks.vic.gov.au & get the answer in writting & take it with you. Just in case you get queried by a ranger. :D

Yes, maybe I should, sounds like they run the place like the NSW RTA, I think they have multipal choice answers, whenever you ring them 8)
Thanks again, Baz.

As MYSTQ said, legally you don't. Not sure about all the Parks but I know some of them have signs at the beginning stating No Pets Allowed in the Park, even in Vehicles.
However if you are only driving through and show a bit of common sense and keep the dog out of site you will probably get away with it. I haven't heard of the NP's setting up road blokes yet to do vehicle checks.

I wouldn't risk it, it's always that one time when you think it wont happen,,,,,,,

I would have reservations about travelling to Mt Murphy historic Reserve from the north with a dog in the car.
Ok from Benambra coming in from the south.
Id want to get to talk to a ranger at Corryong or Omeo to get their opinion, they would be the ones writing the ticket. Ask if you can talk to a local Ranger.
Dont rely on the Hotline staffed from Melbourne.

And get it in writing in case Bob the Ranger is off that day.

Amazing I know, never really wanted or need one

Baz im pretty sure you are allowed to travel a domestic animal through most NP, many public roads go through NP and as long as you dont stop then its ok.
