Hey everyone - I'm looking for someone who wants to live the dream and get paid for it.
Camper Trailer Australia needs a roving journo/ photographer to wander around this beautiful country taking pictures and writing stories along the way. It's a full time gig and you don't have to be based in Melbourne, or any other place for that matter. You just have to be hardworking, a good shooter, be able to write and have a passion for offroad touring.
Anyone who thinks they may be the right person for the job, please email me at: carlisle.rogers@traderclassifieds.com.au with a sample of your photography and writing.
Happy travelling! 8)

Hi Carlisle,
My partner and I along with our 2 year old daughter aresetting ourselves up at the moment to do just that. We will be taking 2 years off towing our NEW camper trailer.
My partner is a keen photographer with both of more than capable of short story writing.
If we sound like a family you would be interested in, drop us a line.
Kind regards,
Wallabyshane

Two years off, eh? That's a good start, it's a big country. What are you driving/ towing?

Carlisle,
As the father of two teenage (well almost in one instance) girls I just have to say - I hate you :'(
Why, O' why do you come up with this offer now. Please give me few years, and this sole parent will be more than happy to run away and describe in all the glorious details my pleasure in doing so!!!
Signed
Me and my Tambo
(so many places to go, so little time to do so)

Carlisle,
We are currently travelling Aus. At the moment we are perched in Cairns working to put some more money in the bank to carry on, who knows where this will take us? Would be interested to have a chat and find out if this could work for both of us.

CTA send me a message on the oldest radio station in the world . WII FM . I am listening to " Whats In It For Me ". Tell me more

People need to realize that all magazines are a business created to make a profit. Quite often, especially when it comes to low volume freelance contributors they rely on the fact that most people will get caught up in the hype of having their picture or story in a magazine and not really worry how much they will get paid. That is clearly evident with the excitement in myswag when a swagger gets published. As it is a job you need to calculate you total hourly rate, expenses, and what you end up with. It also might be worth considering how this relates to the total revenue generated buy the magazine.
Just a thought.
PS
As this in the general section and not the showroom then I consider it up for general comment....
-
Darren, I have no doubt you are correct. The hourly rate would be very low and when you take in expenses you would be luckly to come out in front.
On the other side, if your already out there travelling it could be looked at as extra pocket money.

Darren,
We have a standard rate that we pay per page for contributions to the magazine, which is in the top 90% of rates for any magazine in the country. That is for everyone, including Myswaggers.
You are right, mags are generally unforthcoming with money. I was a freelancer for 10 years and got paid anywhere between 5-70 cents a word, depending on the client. If I travelled for a story and billed for my hours, I'd be a millionaire already.
But we do our best to look after you guys. And I'll always pay top money for a real story from real people...especially if the photography is good!

Are you kidding me Carlisle! where was this job in Jan 09?
If I can convince the 15 yo daughter to go again can I have the job?

This was not a shot at you but more a word of warning as i know a few people that have done this kind of work. And as you say Not every one is fair.
-
A fair call too I would say Darren. I don't think it came across as a shot at Carlisle, more a reality check. I too would love to pack the wife, son and Eos50D and do a trip. I love doing landscapes and have shot a fair few weddings too. May have to "freelance" our Coral Coast trip next year though. lol
cheers

Are you kidding - would be yours in a heartbeat, Greg.
If you're serious, let me know. We can talk about that paltry money on offer.

Here's my general comment...
I think you can see it both ways...yours and mine, darren.
I do believe your way is a valid view and personally I am under no illusions. A girlfriend is employed full time by a leading country paper and she is paid crap money to do a heck of a lot of work, she is always letting me know what full time journalism is about.
However, this is how I see it.
I'm out there, camping and enjoying myself, the fact that I like to take photos and write is just one other aspect to my character, so I see it as a great way to do what I love doing and get a bit of a bonus by having a magazine pay for my effort of sorting through the images and getting the words down. Something which I find easy to do and enjoy doing as well. Considering in the recent edition of CTA, it was said that there are 13 thousand or so people reading the publication, then that's about 10 thousand more than Myswag and the more who see where to go in our great country, the better I say!! So, I guess what I'm saying is that money is not my issue. I'm probably more about the story and the pictures.
Hopefully, this will be considered as a fair comment...
(Whilst I know that there are nearly 7 thousand members here, I am pretty sure that I've not got even near to 1 thousand views on my trip report...so the figures above are just a rough guesstimation.)

So, an offer like this comes up, when, after being on the road for over 3.5 years, i am about to end (or put it on hold, indefinately!), at the end of June?!?!?!?! Cant quite stretch it to 4 years........
Someone convince me to take up this offer, quick......
