Along the lines of the "what music are you listening to at the moment?", I thought I would start a movie one and see if it gets any interest.
Last night I watched Dunkirk on Foxtel on demand and thought it was pretty ordinary - probably 2 out of 5 stars.
Then today, I went to see Star Wars: The Last Jedi and it was really good - 4 out of 5 stars.
-
I was disappointed with Dunkirk too after the way it was built up, There were some scenes that I'd give credit for .. But overall it didnt impress me .
This New Star Wars would want to be way way better than the last one with the sheila and bloke running around .
Watched a bit of Australian classics today, with the little Miss 10, She was glued to it and loved them . .. Good O'l " SMILEY " and " SMILEY gets a Gun " ..
Another quite good one from 1987 that had her riveted to the lounge, was " Batteries not Included " .

I remember them showing "Smiley gets a Gun" when we did the "Kinnon and Co Stage Coach Experience" in Longreach a couple of years ago. A good movie for the kids and I can highly recommend both Longreach and the Kinnon and Co tours.
-
Captain Underpants... :D
-
I watched Hunt for the Wilderpeople last night, a NZ film that's pretty good. A quirky feel good movie.
-
That little fat kids a classic . ;D
Another for you to watch " Captain Fantastic " Its a great movie .. IMO . https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DAIEnDWhzf0 (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DAIEnDWhzf0) 8)

It's a wonderful life and miracle on 34th STREET
Two wonderful Christmas movies.
But for some people, the lack of car chases and expulsions make them rather dull.

Lol stabicraft
We were also just watching miracle on 34th street

Saw Star Wars last week.. was a little underwhelmed to be honest.
Didn’t see Dunkirk but there is another movie due out early next year involving Churchill and the lead up to the war which going by the shorts looks interesting... but who knows.
-
I watched Bright on Netflix.
Thought it was pretty good.
-
Went and saw Wonder, very moving story
Great to see so many parents taking their kids to see this movie.
Great message for all

Remember seeing the Smiley movies as a little fellow in the old theatre in Millmerran. It was a tin shed with canvas slung seats. I think we were given sixpence to get in to see 2 movies & buy an ice cream, drink & lollies at intermission. Smiley was real to us as we lived just like Smiley. How we survived I am not sure. Mum must have had nerves of steel, although her consumption of Bex was pretty high :)

Every time I'm at the local dump point hosing out the porta potti I attempt to make eye contact with anyone passing by just so I can yell "Shitter was full!" Sometimes it works.
On the topic of xmas classics, it's not xmas without the classicest, good old Die Hard.

The Original and best " Blade Runner " and not the " Directors cut " .. Will have to see about the Blade Runner 2049 though .
-
R.I.P.D. http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0790736/ (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0790736/), which we picked up on DVD from Big Dub's.
Think Men in Black meet GhostBusters! ;D

Thought it was pretty good.
Watched it last night. Interesting concept of what if fairy tales were real.
Story was a bit predictable but pretty good
-

-
Kingsman 2 last night.
As a movie, I'm not sure if it was as good as the first one, but I loved some of the soundtrack being performed live ;D

John Belushi in " Animal House " from 1978 . One of my all time favourites .. just about wore out this section where the horse has a heart attack .. Little miss cracks up seeing it every time ... https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hRRRLApWOE0 (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hRRRLApWOE0) ;D ;D

The latest Star Wars yesterday. Don’t follow how they all fit together these days but enjoyed it on its own.
Went and saw Dunkirk when it first came out and came out disappointed.
-

Sadly I have to admit to watching Scary Movie 2&3 last night, still find plenty to laugh at. ;D ;D ;D
-
The Original Blues Brothers got a run today... Tried once watching the "remake' but John Goodman is as funny as catching your scrotum in your zipper.
Anything with John Candy, Leslie Neilsen, Rodney dangerfield etc is gold.
-

I was trying to watch The Matrix, but my copy has been corrupted and I can't find the DVD in the box of crap in the shed >:(.
I watched Robot Chicken's Star Wars instead. Nearly wet myself laughing when a Storm Trooper joyriding a speeder bike hits an ewok.
Today I bought a new Sound Bar as I had bought a new TV a few months back, good picture but really rubbish sound. I then found that none of the plugs were compatible with the old stereo I made do with with the old TV.
Seriously, the sound is that bad that I have no idea why they bothered wasting their time fitting speakers to the case in the first place.
Tonight, now that I have sound that do it justice, its Blade Runner- The Directors Cut.
-
Was about to watch Lion this arvo that we bought the other day during our holiday down the coast...couldn't find it anywhere >:(

I think its worse when you have high expectations of a movie, and 10 mins in you already know you want to walk out.

Only watched a couple, Tokyo Drift and the one with the Blue Mk1 Escort .. That was enough for me .
HACKSAW RIDGE is a very good movie, Reading the story and having a look on youtube to see the interview with the real guy is good too .https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=K5JVQt-C8YE (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=K5JVQt-C8YE)
Quote :
Had his legs blown up by a grenade, saw another wounded bloke rolled off the stretcher he was being carried on, crawled over and treated the wounded guy and told the stretcher bearers to take him first , was hit by a snipers bullet that shattered his arm, treated himself and crawled 300 yards with a shattered arm, back injuries and smashed legs ..
They dont make men like this anymore .

The latest Star Wars yesterday.
Me too. I really enjoyed it.
There is something impressive when a series covers the entire working life of it's actors.
It is modern but still Star Wars :cup:

Classic Review on it LMAO
A LONG time ago, in a galaxy far, far away, Star Wars movies used to be good.
They featured interesting characters doing cool stuff — flying spaceships, shooting laser guns, rescuing princesses from evil space knights.
Today, under the rule of the Disney Social Justice Empire, Star Wars movies feature boring characters standing around giving cringe-worthy motivational speeches and crying.
...... <large snip> ......
Talkin about how it used to be -> "No. Owen and Beru get killed, Luke arrives just in time to find their charred bodies, looks sad for a second and tells Obi Wan, “I want to learn the ways of the Force and become a Jedi like my father.” Then he f***ing gets on with it and doesn’t cry like a [non-gender-specific person] for two-and-a-half hours."

The Greatest Showman at the movies. If you're a fan of musical theatre or Hugh Jackman, this is worth seeing
Not normally a fan of musicals but saw it yesterday and thought it was great. Great to see how one song can tell the same story that would take a half hour if movie time.
Only downer was that the songs all seemed to sound the same
-
The missus dragged me along to 'The BBQ' the other day, it was interesting...
-
Just watched The Darkest Hour. Good movie and a great performance from Gary Oldman who was totally unrecognisable.
-
McHale's Navy :D
Taped it off TV & week or so back & got to watch it yesterday.
Still as corny as it was when the series was on TV, but also still good for a laugh.
Mrs & I were trying to remember when we last saw it, & we both think it was on B&W TV ???, but turns out it was actually filmed in colour!

Any movie that a highlight is someflog from "Reality" TV has to be a lemon, and it gets bolloxed on IMDB too...

" ELIZA FRASER " A big cast of well known Aussie actors, Some great backdrops in the scenes of the Island back in 1976 .. [ Lake Wabby, Wanggoolba ck, Lake Boomanjin, The pinnacles or Red canyon ] bit of an ordinary story line, But still a good watch and entertaining in a simple way.

I find some of them arent all special effects and most things these days are just redone old movies with new names

I went to see "Sweet Country" a week a go. The minister accompanied me. She thought it was OK, I thought it was excellent. And I believe all people who think the aboriginal problem is their fault should at the least see it or read some of our history. When watching it one should remember it was set in 1929. Not 1860.
I will now get off the soap box.

classic movie... :)

For those that want to please Swmbo, recently watched "The Mountain Between us", has Kate Winslet (who is good value) & some black fella.
Not bad, definitely a chick flick but watchable. 7/10
Another we watched is Roman. J. Israel Esq. Stars Denzel Washington, whilst not going to be a smash, it was still solid (anything with DW is solid IMO) 7-7.5/10

Dunkirk.
Got to agree with everybody that said "Meh"
Watched it on an overseas flight. Didn’t help that the touchscreen was playing up and jumped to the end every 10 or so minutes. Took a few hours of back and forth to see the whole movie.
Film Work was good.
Story was crap. If you didn’t know what Dunkirk was about, the movie wouldn’t help. But like all the Hoyle when “Pearl harbour” was released.
-
Watched " Life " last night, love a sci-fi/space/alien flick.

'Annihilation' - I think it was about a plant taking over the world - my brain hurt after watching it! -10/10 :-[

Just watched annihilation a couple of nights ago myself. Was quite good I thought

Sitting here with the flu from hell for the last 3 days, I've been watching about 5 new releases a day (in between bouts of sleeping). Dunkirk coming up. There has been some reasonable ones, and some crappy ones too. My brain isn't working to well to mention them all but Billy Lynn's long halftime walk, Cigarette Soup and Bad Frank weren't too bad.

Talking about the weird weather all over the place, so watched Day After Tomorrow again last night.

Went to see Avengers: Infinity War this afternoon. Great movie.
we (wife, neighbour & I) saw Infinity War yesterday as well.
then went home and watched Alien Covenant and Blade Runner 2049.
Interesting difference in pace.
Infinity War was like the original Die Hard... 110% flat out from start to finish.
The other two had long drawn out storylines.
I'll still head back this weekend to see Infinity War again though. It was just full on and I know I missed some stuff.
Still... it was a good pay off (we all felt) for 10 years of planning and build up.

Not a movie, but have just finished watching the 1st series of the new Lost In Space on Nextel.
At first it was a bit hard for somebody of my age who used to watch the old series all the time, but got interested and kept watching.
To me though, there will always only be one version of Dr Smith...the one you wanted to slap :)

Didnt realize they have made a new series, Just watched the " Lost in space " movie the other day, Umm yeah wasnt a fan ..
And yep there is only One Dr Smith, the one in the movie just wrecked it for me .

I watched 17:15 to Paris a couple of weeks ago but hadn't posted because I still don't know whether I liked it, or not. A bit like watching golf on TV, a bit boring but somehow draws you in.

Watched Love and Mercy the other day. Its a Brian Wilson (aka Mr Beach Boys) bio.
Learnt alot about him and its well done, going between his later life and the late 60s when he started to lose it (and record one of the great all time albums Pet Sounds).
Don't have to be a Beach Boys fan to enjoy. Great cast including John Cuzak and Paul Giamatti. Was on SMS so may be able to catch on demand.
Cheers Glen

I'll have to chase that one up. Although I'm a '75 model I do like a lot of music that is not from my generation. Beach Boys, Elvis, Simon and Garfunkel etc. I was even listening to Miff Warhursts' show the other day and she P.P. Arnold on as a guest. Man, what a life she has lived. And that voice is just..........WOW.

LoganLucky - pretty good worth a watch . Well connected story line , good actors ,some funny bits .

My other half thought it was stupid ... blah blah something ....

If we're on the subject of cop mini series...
Can someone be kind enough to explain to me what the heck the series - (I think its on ABC Sat night is all about???)...
"A City Within a City" ... (or something like that).
I've watched 3 episodes - (admittedly after the series had started...) ... confused, yes..
yeeks....
And their promotions describing the show as a post dystopian nihilist drama doesn't help either !!

Taped "Flags of our Fathers" a few weeks back & finally had a chance to watch it last night, but wish I hadn't bothered :'(
Supposed to be about planting the Flag on top of the mountain at Iwo Jima, but the fighting is probably only 5% of the movie ???
Most of it is the about the heroes touring the US afterwards & trying to adjust, together with flashbacks from now from the last survivor.
Couldn't tell you how it actually comes out ??? I'd had enough about 3/4 of the way through, so left the family to it & went to bed! >:D
I'd be very p1st off if i'd spent $20 to go to the pictures to see it though :'(

Oh and still working my way through episodes of House.

Had about 45 hours on international flights last week and in a vain attempt to reset the body clock I got through a whole bunch of movies.
This might not be all of them, but what I can remember at the moment...
I like today’s superhero flicks;
* Thor - Ragnarok.
We saw it at the cinemas with the kids, but it’s one of the funnier Marvel movies and I was still chuckling at the Kiwi humor the second time round.
* Captain America - Civil War
I missed most of this one last time the kids got it on Bigpond movies. Was good to catch up on the storyline for crossovers in the rest MCU movies.
* Black Panther
We saw this one at the cinemas with the kids too. But I had time to kill and I’m almost as big of a MCU fan as my daughter, so enjoyed watching this one again.
* Justice League
I’ve slept through every Ben Afflek movie ever made and this one was no different. But having said that, I did watch a enough to say... Mmmmmmm, Wonder Woman... ;)
Lucky DC has WW because their modern Batman and Superman are bloody terrible characters and their movies are so boring.
There was a few other non super hero movies too.
* 12 Strong
Based on a true story from Afghanistan (as much as there’s any true stories from the Yanks in wars). Interesting mix of cast members, but pretty good movie. Had my attention right through, plenty of action.
* Death wish
Bruce Willis couldn’t keep up the nice guy act for too long. Mr softly spoken nice doctor quickly turned into the rage filled Bruce out for vengeance that we know and love. While the action was as predictable as most Bruce Willis movies, there was enough twists to keep it interesting.
* The Titan
Not one of Sam Worthington’s best movies I have to say. After mankind has completely wrecked this world we need to genetically modify humans to be able to live on Saturn’s moon “Titan” (so we can wreck it too I guess). Was too many details and characters that just kind of got glossed over and made for a very shallow movie. The ending was more like a cut scene from Avatar then anything else.
* Game Night
Plenty of laughs, but completely of the top with too many plot twists. After the 3rd or 4th time it turned out the previous 20 minutes of complete chaos was actually meticulously planned by someone random, it just got too much for me. The creepy neighbor was well played though.
* Den of Thieves
Plenty of action in this one. Good characters and lots of twists and turns. Maybe a little too close to an Oceans 11 rip-off, but still worth a watch.
* Jumanji (the new one)
Not a bad sequel. Good for some light laughs, perhaps not as scary for young ones as the original Robin Williams flick, but still a good watch.
I’m sure there was a couple of other ones, but I’ve started remembering Ben Afflek being Batman and my mind has glazed over a bit right now... ;)
-

Mystery Road was the original movie followed by the sequel Goldstone leading into the series Mystery Road.
The characters, his family etc , evolve over all three.
Excellent series.

Just reminded me of on other movie I watched on that last OS trip. ;)
* We’re the Millers.
Jennifer Anniston is a stripper helping her dope dealing neighbor, a street girl and a not so sharp young guy smuggle weed from Mexico.
Was good for a laugh and the young guy’s character is a classic.

This morning I finished a project to mount the TV to the wall (thanks Scarps), ran all the cabling in the cavity and rewired the surround sound so it works from the TV. Spent the last few hours watching The Dark Knight on Netflix in surround sound with my son. First time I've watched it, Heath Ledger was outstanding.

I was well dosed on Codeine that evening.

Only difference being that this time I could laugh without crying.

not "as such"... Just even more humour than the typical Marvel flick.
Plus... the Kiwi director, Taika Waititi, did a lot of motion capture himself in the movie including supplying the voice for one of the secondary characters... Korg.

Operation Odessa.... AMAZING...
https://www.imdb.com/title/tt7983794/ (https://www.imdb.com/title/tt7983794/)
A true crime thriller about a Russian mobster, a Miami playboy and a Cuban spy who teamed up to sell a nuclear submarine to a Colombian drug cartel.
A gangster epic that hopscotches from Brooklyn to Miami and Cali to Moscow, the documentary tells the story of three friends who set out to hustle the Russian mob, the Cali cartel, and the DEA for the score of a lifetime.
The tale became an international media sensation.
But the truth about what really happened has remained an underworld myth - until now.

Watched Woodlawn on Netflix last night. About high school gridiron in Birmingham Alabama in the early 70s when racial segration was still an issue, with very religion very much a focus. Really good acting and all around a good watch. I won’t be taking up the invitation at the end though.
-
Watched "The Brothers Grimsby" the other night. Hadn't even heard of it before, and recorded it thinking it was going to be a serious hard hitting, action packed spy movie. It didn't let me down either.

Extinction on Netflix
Really good twist that i did not see coming
-
Watched Justice League on Netflix the other night.
I saw it at the cinema when it came out and didn't think that much of it at the time. But it was a quiet night at home, wife was at her quilting class... just me an the puppy, no new Ronny Dahl 4wd vids on Youtube...
So I thought... why not.
After all, how bad could it possibly be the 2nd time?
Answer... a lot... oh a hell of a lot.
No amount of fast forwarding could save that turkey.
-
Not a movie, but I've been watching some of the Life After People series. Some are rippers, some, not so much... but entertaining.
-
Last night watched The Ballad Of Buster Scruggs. A movie that doesnt let you get comfortable, with the typical Cohen Bro's black humour that I like.
Cheers Glen

Watched Commuter on Netflix yesterday. Gotta love a Liam Neeson movie.

We went to the flicks and saw The Green Book and rated it highly. Certainly a film of the times.
A week or so later we saw Stan and Ollie and didn't rate it a lot. It was a good insight into their relationship near the end of their career though.

Just watched Scarface.. great movie..
last night watched 2 of the On the Buses movies LOL

The 63 Caddy convertible from Scarface lives on the Sunshine Coast these days. (bit of trivia for ya)

Watched Roma on Netflix last night. Great reviews apparently and winner of 3 Academy awards.
Was continually waiting for a storyline to emerge...
Might be just us but will never get those 2 hours back. Must have been filmed on the cheap as they couldn't even afford colour film.
Parts of it were quite moving and other parts quite graphic but still most went over my poor old head.
I gave it 2/5, Margie was in agreement with my verdict.

I loved it... it was Ryan Reynolds playing the role of Ryan Reynolds and Samuel L. Jackson doing his best impersonation of himself too.
They are doing a sequel too. The Hitman's Wifes' Bodyguard. Same main three actors plus Morgan Freeman and Antonio Banderas.
Should be a hoot!

last weekend, while laid up with a fatal dose of Man Flu... I embarked on a what I planned would be a 22 movie marathon, which would finish with Avengers End Game on the 24th of April at the cinema.
Thanks to STAN, (almost) all of the Marvel movies are there.
Since Saturday morning I've so far worked through...
Saturday
Iron Man - check
Incredible Hulk - (not available from STAN, so had to *ahem*... "find" it online)
Iron Man 2 - check
Saturday evening
Thor - check
Sunday
Captain America: the first Avenger - check
The Avengers - check
Iron Man 3 - check
Monday night
Thor: the dark world - check
Tuesday night
Captain America: The Winter Soldier - check
Wednesday night
Guardians of the Galaxy - check
Tonight (Thursday) I'll watch Avengers: Age of Ultron
tomorrow evening - Ant-Man
then over the next two and a bit weeks...
Captain America: Civil War
Doctor Strange - (not available on STAN)
Guardians of the Galaxy Vol 2
Spider-Man: Homecoming
Thor Ragnarok
Black Panther
Avengers: Infinity War
Ant Man & The Wasp
Captain Marvel - (might be difficult as it's still showing at the cinema)
it's a big effort... but I'm willing to step up (lay down?) and work at it...
-
Watched the new Bumblebee - not bad! Pretty much better than the Michael Bay ones - just discount the 'survivability' of the human characters hehe. The Cybertron war bits were great - more of them please!!

That’s a bit of Kama for not only going over to the dark side, but even going as far as building a new shelter for the wobbly box.... :P
I watched Mortal Engines (https://youtu.be/IRsFc2gguEg) on the flight down to Sydney today.
Not too bad, there’s certainly some imaginative people in this world, it has some pretty good visuals in this one.
Fortunately Sydney airport stayed true to form, so the delays and circling around in the air gave me enough time to watch the whole movie in one go... ;)

went and saw End Game last Wednesday evening.
loved it.
So much happened in it and a lot to "unpack". But I enjoyed that the directors did their best to finish as many story lines as they did and tie everything off properly.
A credit to all involved.

Went and saw Avengers last night.. scored a free ticket.
Don't bother going if you haven't seen the previous movies, waste of time.

What I like about the British shows is they dont glorify the lead actors or have story lines that feature heaps of stunts and some unbelievable story lines. Martin Clunes recent series "Manhunt" is also an excellent series.

Went and watched this Saturday morning with the wife. I had watched all of the previous episodes (including side movies) so I found it really good and understood where we were up to. I did think it left out a bit in regards to the Captain Marvel (Carol Danvers) character based on some trailers that I had seen so I reckon that there will be an uncut version become available sometime in the future. The wife was a bit lost on some of it as she hadn't watched many (if any) of the side movies that introduced some of the characters. Still some tears with the deaths so she obviously got involved enough
-
Haven't watched it yet, because it's only on tonight, so I can't give you an actual report - I'll have to leave it up to your imagination >:D

About Brit military trying to carry out a drone missile strike on terrorists & all the backroom carry on involved.
Film is just about done in real-time, with the military just trying to get the job done, but with CYA happening on all sides & the pollies trying to keep their hands squeaky clean at all times by duck-shoving any potential blame on somebody else.
Sadly, it was Alan Rickman's last movie :'(

Watched "The Foreigner" on Netflix yesterday. Produced by Jackie Chan. Set in Britain and is about an IRA splinter group setting of bombs in London. I expected a heap of kung fu type Shit. Happily it has bugger all and quite an entertaining movie. Politics, bombings, double crossing and revenge.
-
APOLLO 11. At IMAX. For a compilation of 50year old clips it comes up very well on the big screen but the sound of the Saturn 5 launch is fantastic.

Another vote for the Foreigner, good flick.
Last night watched [again] The Highest Honor, 1982, about a Z force attack on Singapore in 1944, and the aftermath.
On SBS, a classic piece of history.

Have been lately craving watching a good WW2 movie, so ended up buying a copy of the Mosquito Squadron DVD.
First saw it at our local picture theatre, The Planet, at Camp Hill in the early seventies.

Why doesn’t TV show any war movies any more 👹

Went and saw " Danger Close " the Long Tan battle movie this morning .. For a first showing, Only about twenty people in the theatre, not a box office busting start..
All I can say is it falls short in its portrayal in a lot of ways . Its an ok movie that just didnt hit the mark for me though, after reading / seeing the battle documented over the years .
I reckon it portrays some people in a bad light and I dont reckon they or their relatives would be too happy ..But thats movie dramatic licence ..

Only about twenty people in the theatre, not a box office busting start..
My son went & saw the Beatles movie last week - he said he was the only person in the theatre for that showing ::)
-
Rambo last blood .. Liked the first one way back, the 15 in between I couldnt watch, But reckon this last one was pretty Bloody good, yeah yeah predictable story line and all that, but found it was enjoyable to watch ..
Maybe I identify with the Improvise Adapt Overcome and Persevere ending just a little ;D
-
We went and watched the Oz movie, Judy and Punch at an independent cinema.
A bit off beat, 3 out of 5 for us.

Rocket Man - Elton John story was absolutly brilliant
John Wick 3 - Absolute rubbish no real story just fight after fight after fight that somehow he keeps on winning after going for 48 hours straight
-
Watched Angel Has Fallen on the weekend. Plenty of action but pretty lame plot which I guess is to be expected with most movie franchises.

It definitely wasn't that bad. My kids and I went to the premiere at midnight. They all enjoyed it.

Dolemite is my name - on netflix, dam good movie that will give you a few chuckles along the way
-
Joker, definitely not funny and pretty average - Joaquin's performance was good though.
-
Just watched an old war time movie - The Train..
About the French Resistance working against the Germans....
In real life - those resistance people must have had nerves of titanium.

For anyone who watches SBS World Movies, and doesn't need to see people getting shot every 5 minutes to enjoy a film - 'The Straight Story' is a ripper.
Same channel, for kids 5-14 or so - 'Operation Arctic'.
-
Not a movie, but I'd highly recommend watching "Total Control" on the ABC Iview while you can :cup:
-
Just watched 12 Strong, Netflix - based on true events, was not bad
-
The Irishman
-
The Irishman
What did you think of it, son watched and said he thought it was a bit slow.
-
Was a 3 1/2 hr film. I watched it over 2 sittings. Could see that some would think is slow. I didn't mind it. Would watch it again, over 2 sessions.
-
MiB International.
Wasn't bad, but not the same as J & K ;D

" Gemini man " with Will Smith and son https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AbyJignbSj0 (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AbyJignbSj0) wasnt too bad .

That looks ok, will watch it tonight. ;D
-
" MIDWAY " latest version ..... VOMIT in progress ..
CGI is Cartoonish crap .. acting is crap . On the plus side they got a couple of out of the ordinary things into it but went stupid with the usual movie licence of add more just to make it look bigger and wow ..
Would have been better to just make it all a CGI cartoon movie ..
-
The gentlemen, just outstanding matthew mcnogahie, Hugh Grant etc etc
-
Bad boys for life
Good bringing back the "old" team.
Lots of action, explosions and motorbike stunts (that were a bit pointless)
All up an enjoyable movie.
-

I particularly smiled at the end bit where he is challenging the young fella to a 10k run. Being the same age and on the decline I think about the song played on the radio at the end of the 'Talkin Sport' program "Not as good as I once was but as good once as I ever was". Sigh (lost youth)
-
Went and saw " Danger Close " the Long Tan battle movie this morning ..
:cup: Watched this with my father in law over the Chrissy break and he is an old nasho. I spent 15 minutes beforehand explaining to him that it is not a documentary but a bit of entertainment that also helps people remember / don't forget. Shouldn't have wasted my breath. I think the movie was OK but was more entertained with the running commentary about how the wear their hats, carry their guns, disperse under fire, not following training etc etc ;D
In the end he did tell me it was a good movie but I wouldn't let him watch it again ;D
-
Tarred with the same brush Rod ;D ;D My missus wont watch war land, Air, Sea / battle type movies with me ..
-
1917
Enjoyed it. Amaxingly it was shot in one long take. No flipping between stories or actors. Gave you the feeling that you were there along side them.
-
Bad boys for life
Good bringing back the "old" team.
Lots of action, explosions and motorbike stunts (that were a bit pointless)
All up an enjoyable movie.
Looked at going to Dande Drivein to see this... but had the feeling it would be the same old same Shit as their other movies with different coloured shirts and cars... but if its ok might give it a go on weekend.
-
Tarred with the same brush Rod ;D ;D My missus wont watch war land, Air, Sea / battle type movies with me ..
Got all the army stories for a couple of hours after so it was OK.
Watched 'Once Were Soldiers' with him a few years ago with the same result but his comments were directed at d***head yanks who don't know how to fight a war etc etc so I had a thought this may be a little different but I should have known ;D
-
Midway - good considering the director has had a lean streak recently. A bit rushed to cram in a lot of story but good story, some good story on the Japanese side, and no pointless romantic side plot AKA Pearl Habour.
1917 - Great! Really well made, you couldn't see the edits for the most point, and really sucked you in and showed how horrible war is.
-
Took the kids to watch Dolittle yesterday. Quite liked it and had a giggle in a few spots. Watched Ford vs Ferrari last month. It was so, so.
Just watched Aquaman on Netflix at lunch. It was that good it put me to sleep. May have had something to do with the pitta patta of rain on the roof though. Nah, it was a Shit movie.
Cheers, Mike.
-

Actually that sums it up quiet well!
Went with my 14 YO and some of his mates, so sharing it with them was part of the enjoyment.
-
The gentlemen, just outstanding matthew mcnogahie, Hugh Grant etc etc
Saw this the other week and loved it! Would happily watch it again..
-
Amaxingly it was shot in one long take.
It's not actually! It was filmed the normal way with scenes & so on, but them very well edited to make it look like it was done in one go!
We watched Doctor Strange last night, which was, well, a bit strange ;D
Obviously going to be another multi-parter.
-
1917 Yeah I'll give it a thumbs up, even with a couple of scenes that dont sit right for me ..
-
even with a couple of scenes that dont sit right for me ..
because their webbing is wrong, they're using Lee-Enfield 303s the wrong way, they don't ... ;D
-
Saw The Gentleman last night. Not bad, a lot of language and in fact used the ‘C’ work lots that didn’t sit well with some of the woman present.
It’s good but not a movie you’d run a mile to see.

;D Nahh Fizz .. Just the modern way they moved and held their weapons when clearing the German trenches .. Guy gets blown up and buried in rubble in a tunnel by a booby trap and is only bothered by dirt in his eyes and continues on as if nothing happened .. [ Yeah I know its a movie, its entertainment .. But I cant help it ] .
Then there is the plane crash bit were they run to the barn ... 359 degree's to go off in relative safety and they choose the one degree right in front of the aircraft . ;D
Just little things like that erk me about movies . ;D
-
Funny you say that. Wife said exactly the same thing yesterday about the barn scene while watching the ad for the movie.
-
The remake of Tomb Raider https://www.imdb.com/title/tt1365519/ (https://www.imdb.com/title/tt1365519/)
Didn't think it was anywhere near as good as Angie's original :'(
-
"The true history of the Kelly Gang"
Open line on the screen summed it up
"Nothing of what you're about to see is true"
there are two versions of the Kelly history, one is a hero and the other is a criminal.
There is now a third. The movie absolute s***. It tries to be arty with only one prop per scene, eg a hut and nothing else. There are so many things that are wrong and made up, it would be easier to list what is correct.
Most of the names are correct (except the invented ones)
The time lines are kind of correct.
I tried watching this. Over a couple of days of watching a little bit and got to the point halfway through I gave up.
Don't bother

I can tell you it’s still shown as compulsory viewing on base for recruits going through Kapooka these days.... ;)
But they use it to demonstrate how lucky soldiers are these days with all of the protective gear they get issued with. Making them think about doing everything in just a cotton shirt and pants gives a different perspective apparently. ;D
-
I know they used to show Zulu, about Rorkes Drift.
Don't know if they still do ???

Saw this yesterday and didn’t mind it. Talking of strange things in the movie what about when they first enter no mans land and it is slop and wet then enter the German tunnels, pop out the other side and it is dry and dusty. Also when they come across the house and after the crashed plane scene the other guys turn up and move the chopped down tree. Driving off and the survivor of the original duo is looking back towards the house where his mate copped it and the tree is gone.

Calibre on Netflix.
Enjoyed it.
-
Just watched 'Brock: Over the Top'. Much better than the 'dramatisation' that was out the other year. Brought back a lot of memories of watching Bathurst as a kid.
-
What channel was that on D4D

watched "The Old Guard" on Netflix.
A little bit Highlandery... (semi immortal warriors)
with some interesting twists.
I liked it.

Just watched Greyhound, the new Tom Hanks movie on Apple TV, about escorting merchant ships across the Atlantic during the war. Not too bad.

Watched the latest Paul Hogan movie " The very excellent Mr Dundee " .. Saw the shorts had John Cleese, Chevy Chase, Shane Jacobson, Olivia Newton John so thought it might actualy be ok ..... wrong .. It just came across as a sad attempt at making a movie for the sake of making a movie, with a few big names plonked in to bit parts they wernt the slightest bit interested in doing .. A highschool kid with a mobile phone and a few mates could have done better ..
-
22 mile wasn't too bad.. Lot of gore and action with a twist at the end.. Obviously set up for a second movie.. Maybe something like Jack Reacher sort of thing..

I'd have thought it was going to be desperation stakes looking at the age of the actors. Like Rambo 1500 ...

Keen to watch Greyhound-might have to pay for it on apple tv :'(

October Sky
I love movies based on true stories... that arent destroyed by Hollywood..
This is a real interesting movie. Seen it several times now.
The true story of Homer Hickam, a coal miner's son who was inspired by the first Sputnik launch to take up rocketry against his father's wishes

Watched one we taped a couple of weeks ago "Tower Heist"
https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0471042/ (https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0471042/)
Not too bad, with Eddie Murphy not actually the main character!
Most notable for something in the credits though:
"With thanks to Donald J Trump, Trump Operations, The Trump Corporation & the staff of Trump Tower"!
-
Jumanji the next level
Was really good

“Into the White” on SBS on demand.
German and English aircrews shot each other down and had to share cabin in Norwegian blizzard. Inspired by and loosely based on real-life events that occurred in Norway during the war. How close to the truth but entertaining.
-
Cobra Kai on Netflix. It's a continuation of the original Karate Kid. Never thought much of Karate Kid when I was younger. Horrible acting skills all round, but, Cobra Kai is pretty well done. And it's good for a laugh.
Cheers, Mike

I watched ‘The Devil all the time” last night on Netflix
Quite a good movie
-
Bad Boys for life on Amazon Prime
Utter rubbish
-
Enola Holmes.......on Netflix.
Was surprisingly good. Worth the watch.
-
The other night we watched a thing called Centigrade. It's about a couple trapped in a Discovery 2 under ice. The best thing that we could find to say about it is that there was more interest in the closing credits. That's about an hour and a half of our lives that we won't get back. As one review said "If the cold doesn't kill you, the boredom will".
-
Watched Odd Angry Shot last night. interesting movie.... seeing some well known names as much younger..
Strange role for Kennedy....
then it turns out its on tele today LMAO
-
Watched Odd Angry Shot last night. interesting movie....
It is.
A lot of the way they act & behave is spot on for Aussie diggers ;D, but, as a few mates who went there & did that have said, it all falls in a heap as soon as a shot is fired, as there are absolutely no tactics of any sort shown ::)
Danger Close, about Long Tan is also pretty good.

https://www.imdb.com/title/tt6894872 (https://www.imdb.com/title/tt6894872)
A bit different, & certainly NSFW! ::)
Called a movie, but more of a sort of comedy show ??? The idea is that Shane Jacobsen, playing Shane Jacobsen!, is holding a backyard barbie for all his mates, who are most of Australia's comedians, & all they have to bring along is their best joke of which there are some rippers! ;D
It was OK, but the best time & way to watch it would be on a big screen during a barbie / p155-up with all your mates!

Wonder Woman 84 - got half way (I think) and the wife and I both fell asleep.
I keep trying to watch Warner Bros DC comic adaptations and every single one to a tee has been Shite. I should know better...
watched "Occupation" yesterday. I saw the trailer for this over a year ago and laughed at it. Then read over the weekend that it had developed a cult like following on Netflix. And that it has a sequel coming... with a huge budget now.
It's about aliens invading Earth and told from northern NSW township point of view... Sort of a blend of the original Mad Max, Red Dawn and Tomorrow when the world began.
y'know... plucky but unstable group of local townspeople escape the hills and wage guerrilla war on the alien invaders...
not as bad as I expected.

honestly... my viewing now is streaming (Disney+ for Marvel and Star Wars, Amazon for the Expanse and *some* Star Trek and Netflix for the *other* Star Trek) and mainly YouTube 4wd and travel shows.
I probably know more about Ronny Dahl, Trip in a Van, Salty Davenport and Tyler Thompson than what's on free to air...

watched "Occupation" yesterday.
Watched it last night with my son after reading your post. We enjoyed it, even though it was a fairly standard formula for an invasion movie. Low budget showed in a few areas, but didn't worry me.

worth a watch. It's a doco. But Australian, in Japan... and entertaining. NOT "preachy"...
also watched Nomadland. (Disney+ or Foxtel)
*really* enjoyed that. Especially when you realise that only two people in it are actors... the rest are real people... it's almost a doco'.

Southpaw on Netflix. Think Rocky but a little different and the main character starts at the top of his game in the movie.

Infinite
Think Inception, Matrix & Fast and furious rolled into one.
Not bad, bit predictable, particularly ending, but saved by Mark Wahlberg

We watched the new Marvel movie, Shang-Chi at the cinemas.
The kids were keen to see it, I went in with pretty low expectations, but actually enjoyed it.
There’s a few Easter eggs hidden in there for Marvel fans that link these new characters to the Avengers universe.
The cinema was packed just before the adds had finished rolling…. ;D ;D

Thanks I will keep a lookout, I saw a few episodes but missed most.. I will say that I was disappointed that the TV series seemed amateurish but that might come down to budget. Loved his books, read them all several times. Was shocked when Barrett passed away.

Want to add in movies you tried to watch but couldn't. Tried to watch Nicolas Cage in Prisoners of the Ghostland.
Yes it doesn't sound the best and Cage has been in some, can't type the word, movies. This did not disappoint. Had to force myself to watch past the first 5 mins, but after another 5 off it went. Some say take the work you can get. Think cage should change his career, maybe uber driver or in a call center. Score, all I can say better off eating a rotten tomato than trying to score it.

Want to add in movies you tried to watch but couldn't.
Zac Snyders Justice League...
if you thought the original was bad... hold my beer
oh good god... that was 100% *the* most boring 4 hours of my life...
Kyria fell asleep (I think) about 4 times. Myself only twice.
.
.
*** SPOILERS BELOW ***
.
.
.
you were warned...
So in the end... it was the same bloody story as the original version of "Justice League"... but with 3+ hours of "padding" and some very minor additions and expansions to certain characters storylines.
that's it...
I hope those that championed and petitioned for this for so long somehow managed to enjoy it... because I was certainly left thinking... WTF? 70 million... for this? I won't even bag out the CGI for being soooo bad on certain characters. Much of it looks like nothing more than a video game.
Kyria summed it up perfectly... as "possibly the most self indulgent movie ever made"
My view... it couldn't have been worse if someone had said "Martha". (and that turned out to be a massive plot hole)

"The power of the dog"
In one word crap.
Watched the whole movie waiting for the big secret, which wasn't the great.
Probably should have realised when my Mother in Law recommended it. If that wasn't a clue, when she compared it with "The Piano" should have been enough ( an equally crap love).
After watching it I read the Wikipedia plot to see if I missed something. No I didnt, but I can highly recommend the Wikipedia plot. More detail and only took a minute to read

Watched Red Notice and thought it was total crap lol.
A few funny moments and it's a movie you can watch without too much thinking.
But it's a very basic storyline, horrible acting (Ryan Reynolds had a few funny lines) and I'd give it a 3 out of 10

Yes its a movie ..yes its entertainment, though when they start saying its the best WW1 film thats when I balk ..Have never seen such Pristine untouched by war countryside in any original photos dated around that time .. Maybe in 1914 when battles for areas began it would have been but not after three years oif total war .. and magicaly the trenches are almost precision perfect ..The modern style combat techniques the two used when going through the trenches clearing .. Hobnail boots on the steel bridge girder, would have been slipping all over the joint in that scene [ I had the displeasure of being issued the bloody things once ] .. then comes the sniper, he was a sitting duck totaly exposed and yet the Sniper is that bad he puts a round into the water 10 + feet away then magicaly gets on target at angles he cant physicaly shoot at ..The guy didnt have a round chambered and had to cock his rifle after all he had been through ;D ;D ... Being picky, yes .. If your going to do those scenes at least do it to the period correct and believable way .
Just a few things of the many that bugged me with it and a lot of other so called great war movies are no different with their short comings .. Flame suit on ;D ;D
-
I agree, I thought it was pretty average
-
The guy didnt have a round chambered and had to cock his rifle after all he had been through
That's in just about every war / cop / spy movie or show >:( Especially when you've had your pistol on the baddie (or vice versa) for 5 minutes, telling him to drop his gun, then, to prove you're not joking, you cock it - & a round doesn't get ejected, so there was nothing up the spout all that time! ::) >:D
a lot of other so called great war movies are no different with their short comings .. Flame suit on ;D ;D
The couple of other things that got me were they had to work their way through the German tunnel, dodging booby-traps & all sorts of dangers, then get out the other side & he gets picked up by the other unit & given a lift in a truck! So why didn't they just drive there in the first place ???
Then a bit later, he's in the river & goes over a waterfall ??? They're on the Somme & the high ground is gentle, rolling hills ~10m higher than the rest >:D
-
Shimmer Lake, story is told in reverse. (Netflix)
-
1917 on Netflix, follows two messengers attempting to get an urgent message to a frontline general and save the lives of 1600 men.
The main reason it got so much hype was the "one shot" technique where it looks like a single continuous film. Lots of people walking past the camera etc, to allow clever editing.
As good as it looked I thought the same about the changes in landscape/war torn was too confusing
.

I saw this at the movies when it came out and again on Netflix last weekend. Enjoyed both times but there were some perculiar things. They enter the German trenches and tunnels and it is a mud bog but when they pop out the other side it is dry and dusty. Agree on the being picked up at the house when the plane crashed. why not drive from the beginning. When they are driving away from the house the tree they moved off the road disappeared. Why did he run away from the German in the ruined town and not shoot him.

finally got to see Dune.
wasn't keen on going to a cinema to see it and risking Kyria getting sick with her asthma. So a mate got me a pirate copy. Unfortunately the sound was Shit and we never got beyond the first 10 mins of it.
Finally gave in and went to see it on the GMax screen at Katoomba last night. (tonight will be the last night for it on that screen as tomorrow evening that screen will switch to the new Spider-Man movie)
The cinema was sparsely attended (thankfully) and OH MY GOD... that movie was made for the extra big screen!
Brilliant movie. Followed the book closely enough that I was happy and set up future sequel(s) perfectly.
Loved it.

I agree with all that Edz. But it was a common thing to leave a spent case in the breech to keep dirt and mud out., but also a live round could go off with all the banging and rough handling as the firing pin is pretty much against the primer...

'Don't Look Up' on Netflix https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Don%27t_Look_Up_%282021_film%29?wprov=sfla1 (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Don%27t_Look_Up_%282021_film%29?wprov=sfla1)
An allegorical comedy/satire in the sf genre that just absolutely takes the pi$$ out of social media, politics, denialists. Stars Leonardo DiCaprio, Jennifer Lawrence, Cate Blanchett and Meryl Streep.
Haven't been to a cinema since the Delta wave hit, don't know when we will go to watching a movie on the big screen. At the current infection rate it would be a sure way to bring the virus home to our 3 week old granddaughter.

Thought it was very well done. The yanks dont get it apparently, maybe they just need to look in the mirror (and quite a few here)
Cheers Glen

Very funny movie, don't know why the yanks gave it average reviews.

As a movie it was good.
As a statement depends on which side of the fence you are on, it was either spot on or wouldn't make sense

Every movie to me is popcorn.
I want to be entertained for the duration then forget about it.

Furiosa is scheduled to begin filming April to June. Apparently the Hay CP has been booked out for the crew, also Broken Hill. A bit of a pia as a planned trip to Mungo, Darling run, Sturt NP and Mutawintji NP is smack in the middle of the filming.

Watched that even tho seen it before.
Nice movie, no violence, swearing or sex. Just a good story (based on a real life character).
For something way more serious Belfast. A look at life in the city before The Troubles really got going.
Thought provoking.

Bill Nighy again, in Wild Target as an assassin - but it's a comedy! ;D

For the first time ever, Breaker Morant.

Trying to watch the remake of Ghostbusters. How to destroy a movie in the name of gender equality.
Will not see much of this movie. Will tune into an analogue channel and watch static. More entertaining i think.

Top Gun - Maverick.
Some of the same music and a bit of similarity in the storyline. Must say though that I enjoyed the action part of it (actual battle scenes) better than the first one as there were multiple facets of it as compared to the first movie when there was basically just the one
Good visual effects thanks to better technology nowadays

Went and saw this also with my 2 boys on Saturday night. Saw it in 4DX which has the seats moving, wind blowing and the occasional water spray. I think a few people in the cinema forgot to hold onto their popcorn and drinks though......

about a week ago, i watched the "Donut King" on SBS.
I spend more time on SBS than the normal stations these days. (only 1 or 2 hours each day.....tops)
Its a slow movie, but tells the tale of a Cambodian refugee who gets to the USA and makes it big in donuts.
He even buys a $2,000,000 home back in 1985..... he's worth millions.
Then gambles the lot down the Shitter.
He's in his 80's now and dirt poor.

Haven't seen it yet, but have heard mention that it's all filmed with live aircraft being flown by serving USN pilots.

I watched it today, loved it. Some really nice throwbacks to the first one, some are really subtle that only the diehards would notice. My only critique is that it doesn't have as many classic one-liners as the original, eg. "you screw up just this much, you'll be flying a cargo plane full of rubber dog Shit out of Hong Kong".
What they did for Val Kilmer is also something pretty special I thought.
The majority of the flight scenes (especially the in-cockpit shots) is real footage, but there is still some CGI. Without giving too much away I don't think they would be able to film F-18's alongside a bunch of Tomahawk missiles in flight.
-
The Nazi documentaries on SBS have gone up a notch.
On Sat and Sun (5:30) they covered a different battle plan in each episode.
Better presenters doing it too.
Pretty cool bit of history covered that i'd never heard of.
Worth a look IMHO
-
... SBS have gone up a notch.
They also have had all the old classic Bruce Lee movies on... Fists of Fury on at moment... LOL
Remember as teenager the local crew would watch these regularly

Finaly got to see TOP GUN MAVERICK ..
IMO it was pretty well fairly done, Probably the one of the few slight critiques would be a bit too much referencing back to the original ..
But still good enough to be its own stand alone movie .
Fairly basic in the general theme, Fans of the original StarWars will draw a direct link to the Death star trench run scene / for the mission ..
As expected the CGI is very good and mixes with the Actual inflight scenes realy well in most views .. Especialy like the real inflight scenes and G effects on the actor pilots ..
One minor irit is a couple of Hollywood unrealistic moments " the oxygen mask off for the full face talk shot " early in the film / fixed in the following scenes plus the ending segment, Gooses son has never been in an F14 and suddenly at the right moment can find and operate the Flare counter measure controls marked in a foreign language [ yep hollywood saved the day again ] ..
The carrier landing ending is another, That is way too Hollywood ..
A solid 8.5 out of 10 movie for me though
-
Dangal on netflix - only a couple of days left before its removed. It is an Indian film in Hindi, but its defiantly in my top 2 of international films to watch

Just saw To- Gun
Quite enjoyable, I dear to say better than the original

3 over the last week
Apocalype Now Redux, which we taped a few weeks ago. With extra scenes & segments, it's now up to just on 3.5 hours long & I really don't know why they bothered ??? It's probably 30 years since I saw the original & all the extra 1.5 hours do is make it even weirder & less sensible than that was! :'( ::)
Operation Seawolf https://www.imdb.com/title/tt13429928/ (https://www.imdb.com/title/tt13429928/) was a Christmas present. Not sure if it's good enough to make it from a C up to a B movie! ::) Obviously all done on the (very) cheap - the producers are also listed as supplying props, costumes & vehicles! - even to the extent of not having subtitles on a brand new (2022) DVD! ::) :'( Some massive plot / production holes, especially if you know anything at all about military / Navy / submarines.
Bullet Train https://www.imdb.com/title/tt12593682/ (https://www.imdb.com/title/tt12593682/) comes across sort of like a filmed Japanese comic book. Fairly violent & bloodthirsty, even though most of it done in a comedy sort of way, all mixed in with a dozen different plot twists! All in all, actually watchable! :D
