Title: For those suffering from depression
Post by: maverick01 on December 03, 2014, 10:14:12 AM
I never once thought this would ever happen to me.

Well let me tell you it has,

I will give you a bit of background on the matter. My wife and I first met roughly 4 years ago (both of us are now 29year olds) we then decided to tie the knot roughly 14 months later and while yes as every newly married couple have there petty arguments everything was going along just rosey until October last year when the wife discovered a small lump in her breast. After extensive testing it was discovered to be a melanoma.

Now she is not the type to sun bake and always covers up in the sun. Well we decided to do further scans and it was at this point we found she has roughly 12-16 minute melanomas throughout the chest area. The doctor has then pointed out that there was nothing he could do including no treatment available apart from a trial which has never been tried on humans before and he said he wouldn't try it due to the dangerous side effects. The doctor has then said he has given her a 20% chance to last 2 years and a 5% chance to last 5 years.

Well we fast forward another 12 months and she has been suffering migraines for the past 4 weeks. Well eventually we decided to get a head scan done, well we have more bad news the cancer has now spread to the rear of the frontal lobe (brain).

I will say the hardest thing in life is was your loved 1 waking up every morning in pain and vomiting due to the headaches in which the doctors can only prescribe panadol.

All I can say to everyone is when you finish reading this is to go hug your family and cherish all the good times and forget about the little petty rubbish. As this can happen to anyone of us

I want to clarify 1 thing. I never started this thread for people to feel sorry for me. I started it for anyone feeling down or depressed to post up about why your feeling down and we as a "MYSWAGGER" family can all pick everyone up again.

Thnx for sharing Maverick01.
It's a good reminder of several things:
1-never take life for granted.
2-if we're doing it tough, every chance someone's doing it tougher.
3-we're all part of a great community that will listen, read, provide advice and support when and if needed.

Wishing you guys all the best support and help as needed.

I know where you are coming from mate,

My daughter when she was born was constantly in pain. And I mean the pain where if she wasn't screaming she was throwing up because of it.
She is doing better now and doesn't get the chest pain as much due to the medication, however it is the hardest thing in the world knowing that you are powerless to help,  :'(

Every time I look at her though, when she is happy or when she accomplishes something new I cannot describe how proud I am of my little fighter.

I really feel for you mate, and I sincerely hope that no matter what that you continue to have good times together. Sometimes when I am really feeling the pain of what my daughter is going through she just smiles at me and everything seems ok for a bit..

My thoughts are with you guys, If I can help in anyway send me a PM. Happy to chat.

Cheers

Don't give up, whatever you do, don't give up.

At 49, a very close friend/mate/ex-colleague of mine, went to his GP with a small lump behind his knee.  Melanoma.  Given three months.  Fast forward two years and he is still kicking.  Suffered a hell of a lot.  Multiple ops, radiotherapy, chemotherapy, drug trials, change of diet and life style but still with us.  One tough bastard with an amazing attitude and will to live.  Thought I had lost him last week but he pulled through.  Won't be long and we are all expecting it, including him.  But mate, don't give up whatever you do.

Good luck and best wishes to your wife.  Keep smiling, stay strong, she needs you.

KB

Oh, and no idea what is OK anymore.  Too much crap in life these days.  The important thing is that somebody asks you if you are OK and then listens.  Sometimes that is all that is needed.  We are listening.  PM if you want to chat off line.

I don't think there is any set answer to that question. Don't be afraid to seek help from someone if you feel the walls closing in and can't find the door.
I have found this mob to be a lifesaver.

Thats ok mate. After talking with the docs, the best thing I can do to keep the lights on is talk openly about it. Be it on here or with people over a brew.
Dark times happen to most people. However different the reasons may be, the emotions and pain can be very similar. Openly talking about things, even if you feel silly about it, is just another way to open the door. (I hope that makes sense.)

This post has just made me realise how close the MYSWAGGER family actually is.

People from all around has offered there support whether it be talking to them or steering me or even someone else in a different direction. It truly amazes me the support this forum offers

Have you heard about this web site  http://milowise.com/ (http://milowise.com/) and the book,  Fingers Crossed, Across Australia?   We went up to Outback Adventures Supa Centre at
Morayfield and bought it and it is a great read.
We are stuck in Brisbane for 6 or 7 weeks with me getting zapped in the head, fun fun fun, but as my wife and I sit in the cancer treatment waiting room each day we see so many patients and it certainly puts a different slant on life.  Me, I am always on a high after each zap because I know my tumour is not cancerous. After two operations they are now using some brilliant radiation techniques to kill it off.  Don’t want operation number 3, not getting any younger you know.
Maverick01 I really feel for you guys.    And to everyone else, yes stop putting fences up to stop you heading off.  Do it now!!!!!    >:(  Kevin

I really feel for both you and your wife as the big C is a horrible disease especially considering she is still so young. Hopefully your Wife is one of lucky ones who goes into remission.

My thoughts are with you.

Shame I didn't see this earlier I'd have tried to catch up for a coffee, I've been in Brissy since Thursday last week.. I've been suffering the nasty D for years... Talk - don't let Shit build up on you.

Currently struggling as I ran out of medications yesterday and I cant just visit a Dr anywhere to get them..

I have been thinking about posting this up for a few weeks now but I thought this morning bugger it there are people out there that can help but also other people much worse off than us.

For anyone suffering this disease. Pm me and I can give you some info on foods to avoid to maximise your chance of survival.

The doctors won't tell you what foods to avoid while diagnosed with the "C" word.

This is a little different seeing your Wife is so young, but I remember when Dad was diagnosed with Cancer at 68 during one of this initial appointments a young Dr started talking about a healthy diet and giving up Alcohol all together. When the young Dr Left, the older specialist told Dad in a nice way that for his type of Cancer and age there isn’t going to be any miracle cure, so eat and drink what you like. Dad wasn’t a thin man, but I truly believe those extra Kilos helped during the tough times when he was too sick to eat.

There are always people out there worse off than you, but this doesn't mean you have to put on a brave face and soldier on in silence.

You are entitled to feel like 5h1t. Its a human emotion. You should be allowed to express yourself and talk about how you feel.
Its has helped me deal with many things over the years.

Other posters have mentioned places to get help and there are a few others.
USE THEM.
They may or may not help, but what have you got to lose?
The myswag community is also a terrific help.
I am always happy to talk Shit or just sit in silence and listen if anyone needs an ear.
My place is always open to a swagger in need.

Just get out there, talk and ask.
We're all human, and most all of us here care.

when you have hit a rock bottom cycle how ever physically and mentally painfull it is it's bloody important, imperative to talk then talk some more but recognising it to being with is huge!!

I don't think doctors give out diet advice when going through treatment because most of them don't know. My mum seeked out a dietitian when going through breast cancer and where watching with baited breath a relative with secondary bone cancer do the same thing. Diet change with treatment is a great thing but not an alternative

Unfortunately nobody can guarantee there is a cure for this terrible disease.

When I mentioned about changing diet, I should have been a bit more clearer about it. Unless you research how cancer survives nobody will tell you that cancer actually survives mostly on SUGAR. So if you minimise your sugar intake you may minimise the cancer of spreading. Now the missus has cut out pretty much all sugars since October last year but has recently slipped up in the past 4months.

Now I'm not saying by cutting out sugar the cancer will survive but when your in a situation like she is then you will try absolutely anything at all.

I take my hat of to her for cutting out sugar as in this day and age it's almost impossible to do

Here's hoping for you and your wife Maverick01. I have always been a believer in the power of positive thought so stay positive and optimistic. Years ago I researched Percy's powder for my wife's grandfather and my mum. It was a big call to drop everything and commit to it and I do not blame them one bit. They have both passed. I have attached a link which may give some info and I actually got some when they were still selling it from home in Eurobin in the North East. Now it seems all the Health stores are selling it in some form or another.
I have no affiliation and no proof whether it works or not but it is a science based on acidity and alkalinity of the soils from which our food comes from. Good luck with everything.

Yes, there is always someone worse off. It takes reading something like this to make us realise how petty the things we worry about really are.

We put off doing things until that one day when we have the money, the time, the leave etc.

You are so right, we shouldn't put things off.

My thoughts are with you and your wife Mav and I would like to thank you for posting your story and making me and hopefully others rethink the way they look at things.

Mav,

All the best to you and your wife.

You commented that the doctors won't tell what foods are best. My wife's oncologist certainly told her about diet but that was all to do with what foods were detrimental to the chemo. I'm not a big believer in trying to cure cancer with diet, I don't think there's enough scientific fact to prove that (but not here to start a argument)

The main thing you can do is do whatever gives you the greatest internal strength and confidence to push on. There will be some very tough times ahead. Enjoy every moment, live for the day like there will be no tomorrow. My wife's diagnosis was grim, there was never going to be a good outcome.

I say this with experience. My beautiful wife of 5 years passed away 6 months ago after a brave 12 month fight. Christmas will be tough.

Not much really.

Just the usual Christmas shopping and whatever else is associated with it.

Mainly just work and staying home looking after the missus where I can. But i feel useless at home as I wish I could do so much more for her but I can't. I can only be there when she needs me.

I was meant to go away with another fellow swagger on the 27th but at this stage I might have to postpone it as if the missus isn't feeling up to camping then I will stay home.

Best thing is to talk about it, gets it out in the open and daylight.  :cup:
The big black dog doesn't like that and skulks away waiting for another chance. >:( Keep talking, keep it out in the open so others can help, and that will keep the black dog way from your door for longer and longer, but he will be lurking.
Be thankful for being able to have so much precious time with your wife and family, take every day as a gift from your god and treasure it and hold it dear.
Prepare yourself for the worst, BUT, never give up,work, plan, pray, hope for the best to happen and that will keep the black dog at bay too.
Keep up the talk with your doctor/friends/family it all helps to releave the stress, and who knows, a cure or time buying treatment may come along.
If you ever want to just have a chat give me a call or pm I'm here, sometimes fighting off the black dog myself

Mav - I'm sorry to hear about your situation - but really encouraged to hear all the support you have from the guys on the forum here.
Myself included...either via public forum or private PM's to anyone on here I'm guessing from comments so far.

Quick comments - Unfortunately one of my clients is in a similar situation - kind of? - and his comments to me are that he feels for his wife who is his carer as he has Motor Neuron Disease.  He tells me that she is also dealing with the disease but having to do this in her own way whilst also looking after their daughter.   He tells me that their way of coping is to talk quite frankly about it.   How it absolutely sucks, but they talk honestly about the things they can do now and every day- how they can help each other deal with daily life things...

I really really hope this not out of line - Maybe it is one of the 'taboo' social subjects to talk about - but I feel it may be worthwhile to include in the conversation to assist you.  I'm not a doctor or medical person but hopefully can bring this to the table?

Can I encourage you to seek some relief from your bank/financier if you feel the need and look into ways to help yourselves financially.   Being in the financial planning game I know there are so many rules around super, insurances, financial hardship etc that may be worthwhile starting to think about to make sure you spend your time and effort supporting one another and being supported by your friends and family too.    Rather than money being an issue or maybe another source of pressure.   Hopefully this is one area you are all over?   But if not - talk to friends and family about this and look for some referrals.

My prayers are with you and your family...

McTavish thanks.

We started looking into the super thing a few months ago and it finally got approved only last week. We are just waiting for it to be cleared.

I've also started looking into the carer's assistant benefit. So hopefully that can be approved too but I doubt it.

Both my wife and I go through stages that yes we are happy to talk about it to anyone and other days we don't want it mentioned.

Look forward to sitting down with everyone that's offered there support for a beer or 3 around a camp fire.

Both my wife and I go through stages that yes we are happy to talk about it to anyone and other days we don't want it mentioned.

Look forward to sitting down with everyone that's offered there support for a beer or 3 around a camp fire.

Maverick01

Great news - can I just offer a quick word - can you do some research into taking money from super under different 'triggers' ie some have massive tax implications and others don't.    Can I just ask that you check your options before withdrawing any money from super....

Back to a more cheerful topic - Was the night before Christmas and all was well....  etc etc...    Merry Christmas and I trust you all have a fantastic time together tomorrow...

Thanks guys and gals.

Initially when started this post, I did it to get it off the chest not once did I ever think I would get so much support from a bunch of people of whom I've never met before. I've been blown away by the support I've received.

I would like this post to continue on not just for me but for anyone and everyone that has issues they need to get of there chest.

I honestly don't know how to repay everyone for what they have done recently. The only thing I can offer is a place to rest those weary eyes if anyone is coming through brisbane at anytime, or even just to grab a refreshing drink at anytime.

Unfortunately I can't offer you a place to set up the camper as we have only get a small block but the nature strip is big enough for a rear fold camper or caravan.

Mav,

I haven't been on the forum for a while , and read your original post with a lump in my throat.  Mate ..  what can I say that hasn't been said?? ... probably nothing ... however there are a few things Id like to agree with and recommend.  YES, make the most of the time you have (because the reality doesn't look promising) and don't dwell on the little things ..time is precious, and loved ones even more so.

Importantly thought, do something once a week for YOURSELF ..... whether it is reading a book, going for a motorbike ride or just have a quiet beer ( I don't know your personal situation, so do something that you enjoy ) ... but it is important to look after yourself. I should point out that I deal with my wifes depression on an almost daily occurence, so you know where I'm coming from, in regards to struggling with the "sh*ttiness" in life.

Hopefully you can find comfort and help in this forum, they are a great bunch of people like that. And of course, my PM is always open if you need a chat!

Cheers Chippy :D

Thanks.

Kinda feels odd saying it on a forum. Feels like a AA meeting

I've been reading through this thread as for some reason I missed it. Here's my take on things.

You don't realise how many people are fighting this hideous disease, until you come in contact or do something for a research organization. I did a Charity Ride back in 1980 or 81 from Ipswich to Cairns to raise money for Cancer Research and ever since then my awareness of what people go through was lifted ten fold.

Talking to strangers about health issues is far easier I believe, because they have no preconceived opinions of you and can offer unbiased answers and thoughts.

The last person that I knew for over 35yrs that had it and lost the battle confounded the Drs with how long he survived but it was the love of his cycling that prolonged the inevitable and he was still doing it until a few months from the end. So what I'm saying is, combine the diet and something that you love doing and it may help keep it at bay for long and make living a little bit better sometimes and there is quite a lot written about this.

My thoughts are with you and your wife, Mav and you should never apologise for talking about these things, ever, because it can eat at you and then you can't be as strong and supportive for your loved one!

Thank you to everyone for there kind words. It means so much to us.

Unfortunately today we had a massive scare while delivering the kayak to GreenRV in Redcliffe.

As we were pulling out from his shop. My wife turned to me and said ring the ambulance NOW. She had absolutely no idea who I was, where she was or even how old she is. Ontop of all that she had lost all her vision.

Thankfully the ambulance were there within minutes and immediately started pumping her with 500mls of saline. They then rushed her to Redcliffe hospital where they pumped another 1 litre of saline in her.

The doctors and paramedics both said she was severely dehydrated which caused her to almost faint.

All I can say is that was the scariest thing of our lives.

I always did but now I have the utmost respect for doctors and paramedics. They were fantastic.

Hi Maverick

I don't get on here as often as I would like to, and when I do I usually am pretty shy, just hang around in the background trying to learn a thing or two, however reading your post this morning has really touched me, I will be following you advice as soon as I get home from work as I am recently married and I can't hardly fathom what you guys are going through as you fight this fight.

All I can say to everyone is when you finish reading this is to go hug your family and cherish all the good times and forget about the little petty rubbish. As this can happen to anyone of us

I have not experienced this with my partner or someone so close but lost 2 of my Grandparents to it in 12 months and my uncle a few years later. I can't begin to Imagine how hard it is.

I wish there was something we could do for you guys, I guess all I can do is to extend the same offer that other swaggers have and hope it helps somewhat, I am a shiftworker and am awake at all kinds of wierd hours if you are ever looking for someone to chat to in the wee small hours of the morning, I would be happy to listen or chat, whatever you need. I have been through a pretty Shitty time, nothing compared to you but a favourite saying one of my older friends always told me was "Keep Attacking" and I try to live by that nowadays.

I will PM you my contact details in case you ever want or need to chat, but from my family to yours can I offer you a really big hug and as much support and well wishes as we can offer.

Take care mate and Keep Attacking

Chris

Well unfortunately there has been some more bad news to ad to this post.

Yesterday at 4:20am my wife was rushed to the PA hospital in Brisbane because she suffered from a seizure. So now they have her on IV to reduce the swelling on the brain and also another IV to limit the chance of any possible seizures down the track.

The hospital are wanting to do surgery to see if they can try to remove the tumour growing on the brain.

Very worrying times

Just found this thread, its a terrible diagnosis and tough road ahead for you both Mav.

I have been a nurse for 30 years today, and if nothing else my time in healthcare has reinforced to me the need to live life to its fullest as there is no guarantees. I hope you and your wife have the chance to make the most of the time available to you. Your courage in starting this thread is commendable and the sense of community on this forum is fantastic.

I currently work in mental health having moved out of the hospital setting for a while. If any swagger needs a professional ear or help navigating the system I am always happy to take a PM - no promises but will help if I can.

Mav I see in todays paper that there is a new melanoma drug that is on trial, the drug trial has just been expanded from only NSW to include QLD and Vic residents. Its only being offered/funded to folks with brain involvement, I believe it is a fairly promising treatment. I am not sure who is running the trial, but may be worth a call to your oncologist?

Well as much as I wanted to let everyone know earlier I thought it was best to wait til she recovered a bit.

Wednesday 2 weeks ago my wife had a 2 inch tumour removed from the back of the frontal love in the brain. The operation went well even by the surgeon, he said he is 99% confident that he managed to remove it all in 1 piece.

So far she is recovering well. The sight is still limited but improving a little bit every day. She has a lot more energy.

I was about to make an entry on the daily rant thread about how we missed out on a cruise for my birthday... Now my whole family has to go without us...
Then I paused on this thread,  pulled my head in,  and started counting my blessings instead.
Mav, I can't imagine what you and Mrs Mav are going through,  and I don't think I could express in words how sorry I am that this has happened to you.
I hope you are getting the love and support you both need at this time.
Thoughts are with you and your family. Xxx

Hi,

At this stage things are ok. Mrs Mav was on a real high for sometime but unfortunately over the past 3-4 days she has been getting a few headaches which we have both been very concerned about. I've told her to keep resting as well as going to enjoy life.

So thanks to everyone that was thinking of us over the holidays.

Hey guys and gals,

Your wright, I have been a bit quiet on here for a while. We did however go buy a jetski and only last week we picked up a ute for the missus to drive when she can drive.

Unfortunately about a week ago Ranae got a headache and it disappeared for a day then it's come back but unfortunately it hasn't really disappeared but it did get really bad over the past few days.

Maverick01

Bird- What's coming our way mate?

We don't expect anything as everyone has been there for us already more than you can imagine.

Just a heads up on the wife's progress

Unfortunately things aren't looking too good at present as Ranae has been having severe headaches most days over the past 2 or so weeks.

This morning she said was probably her worst and to top it all off, about 6:00 she made a dash to the toilet where she was sick so the whole process is unfortunately repeating itself.

Ranae hasn't been to any recently but when they removed her tumour that was on the brain. That was done at the Princess Alexandra hospital in brisbane.

She has been dealing with the following hospitals over the past 2 years.

PA Hospital
Mater Hospital
QE2 Hospital
Redcliffe Hospital

Well sorry to have to do this.

But unfortunately Ranae was admitted back into hospital this morning at 9:30am. At 11:45 she was sent for a CT scan on the brain to find out what's causing the headaches and vomiting (similar symptoms as last time).

At 1:00pm the doctor came back to tell us that the cause of the symptoms is because Ranae has another tumour in the same spot on the brain as where they removed the last tumour. The last tumour measured 48mm in diameter where as this 1 measures slightly smaller being 45mm. But the doctor said this 1 has come back rapidly.

So by the looks of it we are back to square 1.

Well since its been a long time since my last post i thought i should update everyone.

Over the past few weeks Mrs maverick has been suffering from severe headaches, so we decided to go for a head scan. Well unfortunately they found 3x Brain tumours behind the right hand ear.

Unfortunately at this stage they have said they may not be able to re-operate but we are heading back up the hospital tonight to get a scan and next week go back again to discuss possible chemotherapy.

Hi all

I sent a message to mav yesterday as I was a bit concerned about him.

Mrs Mav isn't doing very well at all. I don't want to put the details here to respect their privacy but
You are all more than welcome to send him a pm or I can forward the message if you would like.

My thoughts are with them both.

Thanks Everyone for thinking of us.

Well unfortunately Mrs Maverick had a 3rd brain tumour removed from the same spot as the other operations. The recovery was meant to take 4-5 hours but ended up taking 8.5 hours (very stressful sitting and waiting). This operation was done roughly 2months ago.

The surgery went well but now she has a fluid like build up on the outside of the skull which the doctors have said should reduce over the next few months. While in hospital recovering they had found 3 tumours growing on her lower spine which is preventing her walking properly and doing day to day task, the next step for this was to do radiation therapy on that area this area was treated and the success rate of it working and improving her walking were upwards of i think 60%. Well unfortunately it hasnt seemed to of worked ( doctors dont do scans as they go by symptoms) as Mrs March is still in a fair bit of pain and still cant walk properly, NO DRIVING, NO CAMPING.

Since the operation 2 months ago, the doctors performed another brain scan and they found a tumour growing on the front part of the brain (cant be operated on as its too risky). Two months ago thats all she had in there well unfortunately 2 months later there is roughly 4 in total, 1 of which is growing back in the same spot as the past 3 operations.

So at this stage I'm pretty much a full time carer (not that im a dole bludger but the government/centrelink wont allow us to get the carers benefits which suck). Still trying to get intowork occasionally but haven't been able to for the past 2 months.

Sorry i haven't been active on the forum lately. As you can tell I've been pretty busy with Mrs Maverick.

TIA

Yes, we all need to ask questions and need someone to listen.
Doesn't matter who you are, we all need to feel that some one is there.
Sometimes just knowing that someone is there helps.
Some days our cross is heavy, other days no so, But it helps just knowing some one has kept an ear out for us.

Haven't been on here for a while and just read this whole thread. Had plenty of time to as sitting in hospital with the wife as she tried to take her own life last nite with an overdose on alcohol and prescription medication. She suffers from depression. Don't even really know where to start with a response to you and your wife's problem. Life can b a bitch sometimes but you need to keep your chin up and posting on here getting your thoughts out and having people on the forum boost your spirits as it's the best thing that can happen for U both. You can feel very alone otherwise and if you don't look after yourself you won't b able to look after your wife. What you wife is going through I wouldn't wish on my worst enemy.  Thoughts are with you champ and anyone else in a similar situation, I have been there in similar circumstances and it is gut wrenching more than words can express, we passed that stage and all has been good and then 2 yrs later was hit with one of my boys getting depression due to having a work contract cancelled on his business.

He was the most out going, fittest, hardest worker I ever met, to be turned upside down in a matter of weeks where he was suicidal and couldn't be consoled or helped. We all suffered, we had to endure all the heart ache and stress that at any time we would receive that "knock on the door or phone call"  For 2 years he was like that and we couldn't do a thing nor could he accept help from his own sister or brothers, until a man I still haven't met turned his life around and got him sorted out. We are so lucky to have him back to his own self again.

There is help around for depression but hands are tied unless you / the sufferer accepts it ........ like my niece has just done tonight
God bless

Well said. My son went through depression when he was young and came through the other side a great and confident person. He is now 22 with the world at his feet as he follow his dreams in the acting world. To say I am proud is an understatement. Penny, my wife, has suffered depression for years and is on constant medication.

To every one who suffers from it or is affected one way or another with the dreaded curse I hope that you find solice from talking about it with friends and family.

To Maverick01
My prayers and thoughts are with you and your wife at these very trying and testing times.
I have just gone through 5 and a halve years of very similar circumstances to you, where my wife of 43 years battled Pancreatic cancer. She was given only5% chance of surviving 5 years and sadly passed away on the 11-1-2016. We were lucky that we lived our lives fully ,and at every opportunity grabbed life with both hands. If I can I would like to tell you of our hard times and how we coped. Firstly we are(were) very practical and honest people, so we involved all the family even the grand kids (young kids are a lot smarter than we think some times) and were totally open and calm in our conversations. We never blamed any body, got mad at any body, talked to as many people we could find who were in the same situation.I stayed off the booze, but did have a few nightcaps, this helped heaps, (not only me but the wife as well). Eat properly, I didn`t and that was not good. Don`t reject help as this can sometime come from the strangest of places and people.I`m sorry I don`t have a magical wand, but you can pm any time if you wish to talk. All my prayers and thoughts are with you and your wife

Hi all

Mav (Greg) has asked me to pass on the following information to you all.

A month ago ranae was on 20mg Oxycontin tablets morning and night they then increased to to 37mg patches, a week later it went to 50mg patches and then 2 weeks later it has now gone to 62mg patches. On top of all that she has been having terrible pain in her legs and now her knees so last week they changed her nerve blocker tablets (lyrica) from 75mg morning and night now its at 150mg morning and night. With all of these medications they have her on 2x panadol every 4 hours and now Oxynorm (endone) every 2-4 hours this is on top of the already increased pain killers.

Unfortunately a month ago palliative care said ranae defiantly didn't have years but maybe months, now since the medication increase palliative care are now more leaning towards weeks-months.

Ranae is still at home but he is unsure for how much longer.

My love, thoughts and best wishes are with them both.

Vicki

Each state should get one of those large "THINKING OF YOU" cards and have a night at a pub somewhere for everyone to sign them in each state - NEXT WEEK..  no point doing it in 3 mths time.

Happy to buy a card and arrange get together at a pub central to all in Melb..

As I suffer PTSD and depression, things posted by members here have been a big help over the last 12 months. Whether it be a link to a website or something written. While I have never met anybody this forum (I don't think I have), I feel the fellowship offered is something to be proud. I've written this to say thankyou, not for any other reasons. Thank you so much for the up date Vicki, and could you relay  my best wishes, thoughts and prayers to both Ranae and Greg. This post is a bit late,as since my last post on the 4th of Feb, I have had to lay my M I L to rest.
I know precisely what Greg and Ranae are going through, only I`ve had it twice in less than 3 months.
The only advice I can give to them both is to make Ranae as comfortable and pain free as possible.
They are the only ones who can make the extremely difficult decisions. My wife was doubled up in agony 24-7  but was determined to see Christmas through with the grand kids, which she did , then came the hardest decision we were ever going to make in our lives, which was to go into Hospis  care. To see my wife pain free and comfortable for the 11 days she was there gave me some respite from my ever decaying world at that time.
As I said before, if they want some one to talk to I`m available 24-7,just pm me.
It`s so good to see total strangers rally together and just be there for each other, great stuff
Thoughts and prayers to you all.

G`day Foo, and all swagers.
They have been very difficult times, but there is light at the end of the tunnel (so to speak).
The help and support I received from my kids and close friends was (is) amassing, also the doctors ,nursing staff, at all the hospitals and clinics were great. I had to deal with the Coroner in Tas and also the police (just routine) and again all were so helpful and understanding.
This is the reason for talking to all of these people and be very honest with yourself, wife, partner, kids and all in involved.
At some stage in our lives most of us have to face the inevitable and how we do it is up to us alone, but with support and accepting help we can and do carry on.
Its also the little things that help, the kind and caring words words written by people we have never met and  most likely never will, it all helps.
As for Greg and Ranae I can only send my thoughts and prayers, and hope these are strong enough for a good out come.

I thought it was time to update this post.

As everyone is aware Ranae has been suffering from cancer for the past 2.5 years.

Ranae was admitted into palliative care roughly 5 weeks ago and has unfortunately deteriorated slowly over the 5 week period. I received a phone call 5/6/2016 at 6:20pm stating that Ranae's breathing had changed dramatically today.

Unfortunately Ranae lost her battle with cancer today 6/5/2016 at 1:25am. Thankfully i was able to be by her side and held her hand as she took her last breath

Agree with Vicandug - just go with the flow. Everyone needs to grieve (as well as yourself ) but you are also there to celebrate her life and the person she was. I am sure there were a lot of goodtimes and laughs and you are a better person for having had her in your life. You still have some tough times ahead mate but Time is a great healer and eventually you will come out of the fog with the help of a good support network and Swaggers. Also recommend the drive , firewood and port when you're ready.

Strength for tomorrow

Thank you to everyone for there condolences and especially everyone's support over the past 2.5 years.

Yes it has been a tough battle and unfortunately the tough times aren't over and never will be. They just become easier to deal with.

I would love to get out camping with a bunch of swaggers but unfortunately I can't bring myself to going as it will bring back far too many memories. I realise there will be alot of firsts for sometime, but all I'm doing at present is slowly putting 1 foot in front of the other. While I'm doing this atleast I'm still moving from.

So if anyone is interested in going camping soon, let me know and we can organise it.

But once again from the bottom of my heart, I cant thank this forum enough for the support I've been given.

Yours Sincerely
Greg and i know Ranae would be thankful too.

Hey all,

Truly sorry for digging up a very old post but just thought I would let everyone know that I've since sold the house, sold a lot of items that had memories that I thought it was best to let go of and I've found myself a lovely lady.

So I want to thank each and everyone of you for sticking by a stranger and getting me through the tough times.

Not once have I forgotten about this close knitted family. I will try my best to become active again.

It's honestly a bit of a shock that it's still going along with people thinking that it's worthy of being a "sticky" whatever that may be......haha

I may not be as active as I used to be and in honesty it's hard to find that same passion for camping again that I once had.

I will be upfront, I have been suffering with depression for the last 12 months.

At one stage fast tracking a will and writing a suicide note and planned the day and time. Thankfully I am still here.

The last 12 months, with the job we do,  has been hard plus other personal issues.

I try and keep it under control and have good and bad days. I am not on any medication or have seen anyone. I mostly keep it bottled up and deal with it. I know it will eventually get to me down the track.

All the best to you.

If you dont want to seek professional help, that I completely understand due to various reasons but please send me a private message if you want to talk privately.

I'll happily give you a call as talking definitely helps.

As a bloke who has been through a tough time, I found bottling things up might seem like the best scenario at the time however as you said it will come back when you least expect it.

McGirr……..it will only get you down the track if you don’t talk to somebody about it.
Professional help is only a phone call away. You don’t have to see anyone….just talk over the phone.
I had a serious illness last year, and at times I felt pretty low…real low…but I have a wife who I could talk to.
Have you told or talked to your partner ? Have you told her how you REALLY felt ?
I know a couple of people with depression and medication was VERY helpful.
You’ve “come out”, so to speak……keep going and make yourself better…….good luck with it all !!

Every thing you have said Greg, is spot.
You've shared something most blokes would never want others to know.
We all at times fall down the rabbit hole, how far we fall and how we deal with it, and having someone to talk to who doesn't judge.

Please, ask, you are not weak, you are no less a person for asking for help.

Take care.

Mate, You are here talking to us, that is a big step.
Keep moving forward.
At a get together last night, sharing memories of a mate, who stayed positive to his last breathe, his attitude that everything would be aright, has had a profound impact on us all.
Most of us have for our ring tones,
Always look on the Bright Side.
I had it for a few years now, I installed it on his wife's phone yesterday.

Take care mate,

Sadly most blokes don't open up about what is dragging them down and those that show a happy out there personality often are the ones that are hurting big time on the inside and in a world of hurt on the inside.  :'(

Another Forum that I'm on has had a RUOK Thread for a long time and another one associated with my sport of cycling I started a RUOK Thread and has been well received and supported. The first one there was a member that was talking and it set off alarm bells to me and I asked if there was someone close by or had his phone number that could do a check up on him and that saved his life. As blokes we need too open up and not fear snide remarks or any crap but accept that things can drag you down.

I also post the health issues that have affected my over time and currently like what I went through with the beer virus, just so that others may think, well I can relate to this and ask for help if it is getting them down.

The mind is a powerful and unpredictable thing and as much as Drs may think they know best, they can't fully understand what will trigger that thought process of, I'm a waste of space and useless trigger in people. That's why we must try and see changes in our mates.

I'm still amazed that this post is still going after 8 years.

I hope it's managed to touch a few people in a way to make then open up to others.

If its saved even just 1 life then I couldn't be happier that I created the post all those years back.

Unfortunately even after all these years where I had hoped I would never have to support someone with the dreaded "C" word, Unfortunately here I am about to start it all over again.

The difference being is i kind of know what to expect but it definitely doesn't make the situation any easier.

Anyway enough of my problems, if anyone needs to talk about your mindset or you're simply NOT OK please reach out to me as I will never turn down a phone call to someone reaching out.

Take Care Everyone

Definitely take care and be wary of quick fixes whatever the cause-
https://www.msn.com/en-au/health/other/doctors-have-stopped-believing-that-chemical-imbalance-causes-depression-they-didn-t-tell-us/ar-AA11TMJp

If you get hit by the blues for whatever reason (and quite often there isn't a defining cause) then you'll need to go on a journey to fully understand the problem and how to deal with it long term as it's closely related to anxiety and a whole range of 'nervous illness' and their symptoms-

I'm still blown away this post is still going.

I truly hope it's made people take the next step of speaking out and not thinking they can't speak out because they may think it's shameful.......

I might not be as active here as I once was unfortunately but each and every one of the members in this group are willing to help everyone.

This group truly helped me through a difficult time in life and even though I may not have a 4wd or camper anymore I still have a sticker on my daily and hopefully once I get the next setup I might actually get to meet some of you again.

For those that haven't read this thread, grab a cold one and go back to the start, and read through and take it in. I just did again (well 3 beers)

Shows what amazing people are on this board, and those that are not active anymore.

Would be good to see some of them back.

I'll try to get a bit more involved in the forum, although I've had a lot going on in the last few years it's still no excuse.

That is good to hear, mate. :)
It's not a race, keep moving forward, you're doing good.

Things are busy, work and helping my sister who has become our mothers carer, trying to organise a lift, to get mum up to the second floor.
She's 83, just had a few stents removed, suffered a mild stroke, fingers crossed she will be home Tuesday.
Still no word of where our brother might be, last known place was Mt Isa 18 months ago, his car isn't registered in NSW anymore.
My sister has started a garden area for Mum to spend time in, she has fixed breeding boxes to trees, which have attracted a Rozelle pair.

Anyway, good to hear from you Maverick.

Depression is not like any other sickness, there is no cure, it's with you for the rest of your life, but, with help from friends, an appropriate  psychiatrist, medications and counselling it can be controlled most of the time.

I have to be aware of my moods and feelings 24/7, sometimes I can feel ok, then within a hour I can feel myself falling into the black pit for no apparent reason, then I have to think about what caused the problem, think it out, then put the bad thoughts behind me, it's a day to day fight.

(Nil Illegitimi Carborundum)  Don't let the bastards grind you down is a very good phrase for me to try and follow.

3 years ago I was in a bad place and didn't know it, I was drinking up to 3 bottles of spirits a week, my marriage and home was breaking down, I took an overdose of medications and ended up in 1 West, Frankston.
This where I got a lot of help, both with my mind and medications, where I learnt that booze is a depressant. I had ongoing help/supervision for more than a year, didn't have any booze of any sort for more than 6 months.

I am now in a much better place in my mind and family, alcohol intake is almost nil, nightmares and flashbacks are gone ,yes there are god and bad days

Best thing I have is to talk about it, discuss how you're feeling, around a campfire works well , if ever anybody feels they would like a chat either over the phone 0419357763, over a camp fire or just a pm , Im here 24/7
Cheers Keith

Hey Keith,
Thank you for sharing your experience, and how you are dealing with this.
Here's hoping someone finds strength from reading your words, and it makes a difference to their life or the life of another.
Cheers.

Hey all,
Absolutely Xcavator that alcohol is a terrible thing to have either when you're feeling low or have the potential to let it affect you.

I personally heard some bad news roughly 12 months ago in regards to a very close family member that has been diagnosed with cancer, unfortunately it brought back a lot of memories. Since then I haven't had any alcohol apart from 2 drinks last weekend which I then decided all wasn't for me any more.

On top of all of this I split up with my partner which was an indirect result of my brother throwing accusations around the family causing drama (it's not the first time but rest assured it's definitely the last time) so unfortunately the last 2 years haven't been the best but I'm definitely not complaining.

If anyone ever needs to talk, by all means send me a message and happy to either call you or give you my number if you want.

There can be dozens of different reasons/causes of depression, but this sort of thing is 100% unforgivable .

I have always kept an eye on this thread and read with interest the battles others have gone through and how they have dealt with them. I didn’t contribute to the thread with my own battles as that was something I chose to share with others. Professional help has been a great thing although the journey is not over yet.

But to today’s story. My wife lost her brother yesterday. He had had enough and took his own life due to circumstances beyond his control. Sadly or fortunately they had only found each other five years ago through ancestory and had enjoyed a beautiful relationship from then onwards despite him living in the US. They spoke weekly and loved each other dearly. He was a good man who I was pleased to call a “mate”.

We reflect on any signs that may have been apparent and can’t find any answers. Such a sad time. Take care all who have bad things happening in their lives and get help.
Cheers
Ken

Sorry for your loss. Just remember not everyone shows signs, not everyone can see signs.
