Had to laugh.
A protestor who vandalised an 1889 McCubbin painting in WA and glued her hand to the wall over a Woodside project. She is  'ceramic artist' apparently. Dunno about your family, but my kids made better stuff than this in Kindy.

My brother in law is one of these people. It’s been dragging on for a few years now, but he’s just been given six months to remove all the buildings on his land or the council will bulldoze the lot, and send him the bill.

Rock legend David Crosby dead aged 81  :'( :'( :'(

David Crosby, founding member of the influential rock groups The Byrds and Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young, has died at age 81.

Crosby’s wife of 36 years Jan Dance confirmed his passing in a statement, which she says followed a long illness.

“He was lovingly surrounded by his wife and soulmate Jan and son Django. Although he is no longer here with us, his humanity and kind soul will continue to guide and inspire us,” read a statement from his family.

“His legacy will continue to live on through his legendary music. Peace, love, and harmony to all who knew David and those he touched. We will miss him dearly.”

The family asked for privacy as they cope with the “profound loss.”

Apart from the obvious like Yuendemu and Wadeye the same is playing out in places like Mt Isa Cairns and Townsville and travellers beware.

At some stage this country is going to have to treat the overall drug problem with sensible consistency. As a responsible adult you get to imbibe your quality guaranteed drug of choice providing your user pays education about that has been undertaken and you hold that licence endorsement. Now you cannot share said drug with any other adult not similarly endorsed and what's more supplying to minors is treated akin to paedophilia.

You hold that drug endorsement/s for as long as it doesn't break the rules impacting others. That includes DUI or operating machinery under the influence etc and you lose your drug licence rather than an operator licence. After all the problem is presumably your addiction and loss of self control rather than poor driving/operating skill although completely drug free there are still responsible safe practices to observe. We desperately need a consistent and mature regimen for mood altering drugs that permits responsible adult free choice and woe betide anyone that breaches that with minors while their bodies and minds are in formation.

You're skimming the daily clickbait and there's an article extolling the virtues of MyGov and what every dinky-di should know-
https://www.msn.com/en-au/news/australia/mygov-set-for-major-changes-that-every-australian-needs-to-know-about/ar-AA16W9wi
and there's the money quote-
More than 25million Australians have a MyGov account, with 1.4million people using the website everyday and daily usage tripling in the past five years.

Hang about as the population of Oz was 25.5million as of June last year so what's the deal with a MyGov account? Well it's like this-
https://my.gov.au/en/about/terms

To have a myGov account you must be a natural person and have your own email address. An email address can only be used once to create a myGov account.
Being a natural person means you are an individual human being. You are not a corporate entity, robot, or a software program, for example.

Which when you think about it means the Gummint already have all our names and numbers in the one place ready and waiting for each of us to log onto and match up with our central data file. Either that or there's an awful lot of aliases on MyGov just like there are email addresses.

So what information do you think they want, when you log in, that they don't already have attached to your TFN?

So what information do you think they want, when you log in, that they don't already have attached to your TFN?

I think the article pointed out what they want all in one place in future-

What changes have been recommended for MyGov?
* Access to more government services

* Registration of births and deaths

* Helping people respond to disasters

* Access to drivers licence, Medicare card, senior card and occupational licence

* Access to the census

* Allow users to enrol to vote

* Allow users to renew their passport

And as we've seen the bigger the database the harder they fall-

With the publicans attitude it's no wonder it's a bummer. 8 of us turned up for lunch 1 Saturday, bar was empty, 3 people out side in the "beer garden". Bloody hot day, sign on the door says "no dogs" but seeing as the place was almost empty we asked if we could take our dog out into the beer garden, "NO, go park under a tree" so 3 or $400 walked out the door never to return. More than 25million Australians have a MyGov account,

Hang about as the population of Oz was 25.5million as of June last year so what's the deal with a MyGov account?

Which when you think about it means the Gummint already have all our names and numbers in the one place ready and waiting for each of us to log onto and match up with our central data file. Either that or there's an awful lot of aliases on MyGov just like there are email addresses.

Well, MyGov has been running for ~20 years, so if, in that time, you've done anything with Govt e.g. lodged a tax return, used HECS for Uni, had any dealings with CentreLink (Youth Allowance / Newstart through to Age Pension), or been born!, then you're in the system!

It would surprise me if there are .5 million people NOT on it ???

I think the article pointed out what they want all in one place in future-

What changes have been recommended for MyGov?
* Access to more government services

* Registration of births and deaths

* Helping people respond to disasters

* Access to drivers licence, Medicare card, senior card and occupational licence

* Access to the census

* Allow users to enrol to vote

* Allow users to renew their passport

And as we've seen the bigger the database the harder they fall-

But hang on a sec. What was the track like before they got there? from at least one pic it looks like there was already erosion problems anyway. And yes a muddy track looks messy when you drive through it, but it's not necessarily making the situation any worse. If it is a regeneration area, then yes, they shouldn't even be there. But I think there is a bit of sensationalism going on in that story.

And no I don't advocate tearing up the bush or bush tracks for the fun of it, but a bit of honest reporting doesn't go astray.

It's not a track. It's a firebreak.

Doesn't matter what erosion was there, it isn't a track open to the public.

I've walked in that area (but not for a few years) and climbed the peak (Fredericks Peak) several times that you can see in the background, and as far as I know it is a track, just one that is closed to the public permanently regarding vehicle access

Good news for motorsport in NSW

Pheasant Wood Circuit to Reopen Wakefield Park Raceway
Goulburn, Australia - Goulburn MP Wendy Tuckerman, together with the CEO of the Goulburn-Mulwaree Region council Aaron Johansson and the Chamber of Commerce's Darrell Weekes, have been working tirelessly with the owners of Pheasant Wood Circuit to find a permanent solution to the closure of Wakefield Park Raceway.

After several months of discussions and community engagement, Pheasant Wood Circuit has collaborated closely with Stephen Whyte representing the current owners of Wakefield, the Benalla Auto Club. Whyte was totally committed to ensuring the new custodian of Wakefield Park was extremely sympathetic towards the local community and especially understanding of the issue of noise emanating from the circuit.

The acquisition of Wakefield Park Raceway by an established track operator in the region, such as Pheasant Wood Circuit will breathe new life into the raceway and provide a sustainable and commercially viable solution to the circuit, especially whilst addressing the noise concerns that led to its closure.

Wendy Tuckerman and Pheasant Wood Circuit's owner Steve Shelley have listened to the concerns of local residents and businesses to ensure that the rejuvenation and reopening of Wakefield Park Raceway will be done in a manner that is respectful and beneficial to the community.

"We are thrilled to have found a solution that will allow the reopening of Wakefield Park Raceway," said Wendy Tuckerman. "This is a win for the motorsport community, local businesses and the wider community."

The reopening of Wakefield Park Raceway is expected to bring significant economic benefits to the Goulburn region, with an increase in tourism and the creation of new job opportunities.

Pheasant Wood Circuit will soon commence the rejuvenation of Wakefield Park Raceway and looks forward to reopening the circuit in the coming months.

.. Customers at a collapsed building firm are furious as the appointed liquidators have flagged that they will pursue some of them over unpaid debts.

... But in a stern email to customers on Friday, Grant Thornton warned them that home owners with outstanding payments could be pursued for money.

“The Company hereby gives you formal written notice that the Company will not undertake any further work in performance of the Building Contract,” the email from Grant Thornton, obtained by news.com.au, reads.
“We will be in touch with you separately in respect of the payment of any amounts that the Company might have been entitled to prior to the date of this notice. The Company reserves its rights in this regard.”

A popular campsite renowned for its surf beach and coastal walking trails has been closed over concerns an Aboriginal site and its artefacts were impacted by camping activities.

Bear Gully Campground, located within the Cape Liptrap Coastal Park south of Melbourne, has been closed until May 7 by the state government’s peak body for the management of National Parks, Parks Victoria.

Beach access to the campsite has also been blocked.

The sudden closures comes after advice that camping and recreational activities within the park may have impacted an Aboriginal place and its artefacts.

Recall on home battery system

Have you read the latest LG ESS Home Energy Storage System Batteries recall notice (27 March 2023) to recheck serial numbers? The recall notice was further extended to include S/A Gen LG batteries housed in other branded home energy storage systems.

The ACCC updated the LG ESS Batteries Recall Notice advising consumers that affected S/A Gen2 batteries have also been supplied in unbranded generic cabinets.

A further recall of LG batteries to recheck serial numbers was issued following errors detected in the LG online serial checker. Electrical contractors who have installed any recalled batteries should help customers by heading to the LGES battery checker.

S/A Gen2 batteries may have also been installed in non-LG branded systems including: SolaX Power Station, SolaX X-Cabinet, Opal Storage, Redback SH5000, Red Earth Sunrise, Red Earth Drop Bear, Eguana Evolve, VARTA Pulse Neo, and battery modules contained in a generic cabinet (many of which are identifiable by connection to a Selectronic inverter).

Milestone achieved!!!! Earlier this week, Transport & Main Roads (TMR) Queensland have released the newly developed Gross Combination Mass (GCM) code as well as the modification of the GVM code. This has been a huge amount of work by TMR Queensland and their NSW & Victorian counterparts along the AAAA working group. Industry driven and two years in the making, ARB, Fulcrum, Pedders, Lovells and Wheel Conversion were heavily involved in this milestone and Four Wheel Drive Australia are extremely proud to be associated with this working group in which our Industry will no doubt see the benefits into the future.

New Driver Distraction Laws

Please be aware there are new laws being brought in to limit driver distractions on public roads throughout the state.

The Minister for Roads and Road Safety recently announced changes will be enacted from March 31, this will bring Victorian regulations into line with the rest of Australia. The news changes are set cover built in vehicles systems, mounted devices, wearable and portable devices. Along with these rules new camera technology is also set to debut on Victorian roads in the coming months to help detect those using phones or not wearing seat belts whilst driving. Learners and probationary drivers are at a much greater risk in their first years of driving so stronger conditions will apply, including not touching any portable device, taking phone calls or using voice control unless parked.

Motorists caught driving distracted will receive penalties of four demerit points and a $555 fine. Community awareness campaigns will run over the coming months to educate drivers on the devastating risks of distraction.

The Labor Government is also investing $33.7 million as part of the Victorian Road Safety Strategy 2021-2030 to introduce new mobile phone and seatbelt detection camera technology that will help catch people using their mobile phones and not wearing their seatbelts while driving.

The new camera technology will be operational on Victorian roads in coming months. A three-month warning period will apply from the technology’s activation before drivers face infringement and demerit penalties.

For more information on the new road rules visit www.vicroads.vic.gov.au/drivingdistractions and on the mobile phone and seat belt detection cameras visit www.camerassavelives.vic.gov.au.

For more information on the new road rules visit www.vicroads.vic.gov.au/drivingdistractions and on the mobile phone and seat belt detection cameras visit www.camerassavelives.vic.gov.au.

It’s not the 4 devices on the pole, but in the bottom of the picture is the yellow arm and cameras of the the seatbelt/ phone use monitoring trailer.

I’m not going to argue because I got the picture from a newspaper that said that’s what they were. On reflection, that was probably a bad idea.

Anyway, whatever takes the photos then sends them from the UK to Australia for processing. I didn’t read that in the paper.

A policeman in this video says so. So, it must be true.

In the paper this morning. Do people just forget what they are driving or what? I mean I can understand people forgetting that they have put a roof rack on but surely not that you are driving a double decker bus.

As a teenager, I lived in Ballina, attended high school in Lismore, travelled on a double decker bus(Kirklands). In those 4 years, I remember at lest a couple of times that the bus had hit a low hanging branch along the Ballina Cutting,  smashing the fibreglass upper deck roof section.
Thank God nobody ever got hurt, although it did scare the crap out of us.
But driving in town, you would think the driver knew his run, and if there were low bridge, etc.

Hi,
I was under the impression that there was a minimum height provision that needed a bump bar as well as the height indicator.
Funny story, as I was told.
Army base with tanks etc on low loaders and local council maintained roads and low overhead bridges etc.
All is fine for years,  council fixes roads every year or so and one day - BANG. Considerable damage $ to both bridge and tank.
Council at fault for not changing height sign with build up of bitumen road base repair.

Cheers

We spent Easter at Mitta and there’s only about 3 or 4 tarred roads in and out then a series of farm roads and forest tracks. Did wonder if Google maps may have led them astray……..

The double deckers used for the country school runs around here have brush guards running up the front left and across the top deck front windows to ward off stray branches.

Sorry, I forgot to mention it was 1979 to 82.
The front of these buses had no protection at all.

Hi,
Some times a bit of appropriate vigilante action solves a problem.
When our kids were in primary school they had a bullying problem with a tough little kid at school who had just moved into local crisis accommodation. He had very blond hair and a stocky build apparently.
One morning riding the motorcycle to work, I spotted him on the footpath, hands in pockets and oozing attitude.
I did a u turn and pulled up just in front of him, flipped up the visor and challenged him by name.
Told him (not so subtly) that us Dads were sick of his bullying our kids and this was his first and only warning and we knew where he lived so any future incidence of bullying would result in a visit, at night by all of us, probably with baseball bats.
Flipped visor shut and drove off.
End of problem!
Cheers

"After assessing this feedback, along with the boat owner's response and bearing in mind that this boat has sailed extensively at many clubs on Port Phillip for approximately a decade without apparent complaint, the board resolved at the following meeting not to take any action in relation to the name."

The letter said the club had implemented a policy to "ensure the appropriateness of boat names going forward".
It said it had identified "several" boats that might contravene the policy and that those names would be changed.

So does that mean this one person with nothing better to do than complain about nothing has managed to get these boat names changed?

50 or so years ago I used to do a lot of water skiing on the river Murray. there was a boat on the water quite often called FLICKER. So what you say, well wasn't much of a space between the L & I so read it again with less space in the required spot.

Mate of mine had a fishing boat with that name. He was also Irish. Whenever he put a call out on the radio inevitably responders would be in stitches.

Most of the names in the original post are completely innocent unless the observer has a dirty mind.

Hi,
One of the radio apprentices at RAAF Laverton rigged up a device to listen to the audio going to all the speakers at the local drive in. The screen could be seen from the road in,  and as there was little traffic going in after the movie started he would park at the entrance and watch the movie from there, with sound.
Cheers

Commonwealth games Shit canned

I feel sick, I agree with Dan Andrews for once :'(

Mr Andrews said a costings blow out forced the Government’s hand, declaring he had no confidence the Games could be delivered for less than $7 billion. It was originally estimated the 12-day event could be delivered for $2.6 billion.
“I’ve made a lot of difficult calls, a lot of very difficult decisions in this job,” Andrews said.
“This is not one of them. Frankly, $6b (or) $7b for a sporting event, we are not doing that. That does not represent value for money, that is all cost and no benefit.

https://www.news.com.au/sport/olympics/bombshell-announcement-leaves-26b-commonwealth-games-in-turmoil/news-story/637117c3b03c0f35a71386a23bd1a9ae (https://www.news.com.au/sport/olympics/bombshell-announcement-leaves-26b-commonwealth-games-in-turmoil/news-story/637117c3b03c0f35a71386a23bd1a9ae)

I can think of better things to spend $7 billion on

Locally (Gippsland) the new facilities were supposed to include a lot of accomodation which was going to be turned over as public housing afterwords.

What is very confusing is he is apparently going to still spend the $2B on regional facilities, including$1B on regional accommodation, but the original budget was only $2.6B, so does that mean the original budget only allowed $0.6B for everything outside facilities, but is now estimated at $5+B?

Talk about rubbery figures!!

The 2022 games were relatively cheap because they were held using mostly existing facilities for events and competitor accommodation. On university campuses etc.

Maybe a quick rethink could salvage the situation.

My gut feel is that Dan wouldn’t have made this major announcement without a phone call to Albo to ask if some of the Fed Budg Surplus might be made available to keep this event going. Good for all of Aus for tourism not just Vic.

In all the media, the Fed Gov are conspicuously absent……………so maybe the numbers are somewhat correct

Also the media are beating up the additional cost of regional venues, while most of us down here know those locations are nearly outer Melbourne suburbs anyway. Large satellite commuter cities within an hour to an hour plus from the cbd anyway.

I'm not sure if you have ever had a pool installed but it isn't cheap. Now budget for 2 - not 6m x 9m but Olympic size with grandstands etc etc. Now after 20 or 30 races one needs to be demolished - hole in the ground, landfill - gone !! Now lets build a velodrome - great for the town and keeps kids off the street etc etc. After a few days of racing we'll demolish it - yep, hole in the ground, landfill - gone. And all this within spitting distance of a city with some of the best existing sporting facilities all within a single tram ride from the GPO. Anybody been to the Melb Sports and Aquatic Centre? It sits on the outskirts of the GP track.

Incidentally I am not a sports freak nor am I particularly politically interested. IMO we should never have put a bid in given the financial state of the country / state.

It doesn’t have to be a pi$$ing contest. Some pride needs to be swallowed to get the running and jumping back on track.

Was watching a show recently that pointed out that the first mega-Olympics were set-up & run by a bloke called Adolf, who wanted to show off Germany to the World.

Every country since then has "had" to go bigger & better to prove that they're the best ::)

Running & jumping - nah, who needs that on display ??? The rest of the World just needs to see how good I am! >:(

To be honest, I’m surprised that Qld hasn’t decided to do the commonwealth games. All the infrastructure is already built from the 2018 games and as they would be planning on new gear for the 2030 olympics, they would get additional value out of any existing infrastructure and facilities. I’m sure that some of the Olympic facilities could be finished in time for 2026.

Sorry I don't have a link.
Just heard on the telly,
All vehicles are to be fitted with reverse cameras/sensors by 20??(sorry missed the date)
The reason, the amount of kids getting run over, in driveways, shopping centres.

Where is the responsibility of adults/parents?
Why are we becoming so reliant on technology?

Snatch strap & the bogged car came free all of a sudden? :'(

I witnessed a snatch strap doing that when it ripped the tow hitch off the bogged car. It flew back through the rear window of the recovery vehicle, got deflected down from the roof and exited through the windscreen, taking the front passenger seat head restraint off in the process. The passenger had just got out after two previous failed attempts.

In the British Army, kinetic recoveries are only allowed on armoured vehicles.

The stupid thing is that they went the other way in the UK. Until recently, you needed to take an extra test if you wanted to tow a trailer over 750kg. Now you can tow a trailer up to 3500kg with an ordinary car licence.

Box trailer
Small boat
Camper trailer
Large boat
Small caravan
Large caravan
The bureaucrats will have a field day. Government will need to employ another 1000  time wasters just to try and manage it.

Hi,
We had stopped at a reserve under a road bridge near a town for a coffee and to check out the area for an overnight stop.
Along side some historic machinery was a sign advertising that the local caravan park had a security fence for our reassurance of a safe stay.
We opted for another 100km or so of road and bush camped.
Cheers

I think in this case the reporter is merely writing about a statement of fact. 2 recently retired police officers had their vehicle stolen in  your town. The same victims  have spoken with their colleagues, and those colleagues have confirmed there is a youth crime in the locality. The victims said as much in a live TV interview.
It would seem you only have to google the subject and you get a result like the attached screen shot indicates. What is true is that  Townsville is not the only town exposed to youth crime. QLD haas a youth crime problem on its hands but the out of touch government with a single focus of running an athletics carnival some time in the future has dropped the ball in addressing this problem.

Great News.. now do it everywhere

Oblivious drivers are being slammed with fines and demerit points for obnoxiously ignoring one small road rule that some drivers believe is little more than a courtesy.

Police are slamming drivers along the Surf Coast Highway in Victoria for hogging the right lane on a dual carriageway.

At least five drivers were nabbed for driving in the lane on Wednesday and Thursday, which by law is only to be used when overtaking.

Some drivers were going slowly, while others were cruising along at the limit, and all were fined $192 and given two demerit points.

Vic Roads states that the right lane on multi-lane roads with a speed limit of 80kms or above is only for overtaking, turning right, or when roads are congested.

With discussions about people towing caravans needing to do towing courses it’s interesting to see these figures from the RAA in South Australia published today. 54000 registered vans in SA.
These stats taken over a ten year period look pretty good to me considering the number of vans on the road at any given time. Twelve deaths in 10 years, with total road deaths in SA somewhere between 80 to 120 per year, 1.2 is a pretty low representation.
No road deaths are good but I think zero targets are pie in the sky stuff.

You get the cigar…

Firefighters from Derbyshire Fire and Rescue Service responded to reports that a vehicle was jammed underneath a railway bridge in Chesterfield Road in Dronfield.

The incident was first reported around midnight on Saturday, August 19.

It is reported that the van was on the back of a recovery truck and became stuck after the truck attempted to manoeuvre under the bridge that connects Dronfield train station with Chesterfield.

(& with {slight} apologies for the length)

He was getting old and paunchy
And his hair was falling fast,
And he sat around the RSL,
Telling stories of the past.

Of a war that he’d once fought in
And the deeds that he had done,
In his exploits with his mates;
They were heroes, every one.

And 'tho sometimes to his neighbours
His tales became a joke,
All his mates listened quietly
For they knew where of he spoke.

But we'll hear his tales no longer,
For ol' Bob has passed away,
And the world's a little poorer
For a Soldier died today.

He won't be mourned by many,
Just his children and his wife.
For he lived an ordinary,
Very quiet sort of life.

He held a job and raised a family,
Going quietly on his way;
And the world won't note his passing,
'Tho a Soldier died today.

When politicians leave this earth,
Their bodies lie in state,
While thousands note their passing,
And proclaim that they were great.

Papers tell of their life stories
From the time that they were young
But the passing of a Soldier
Goes unnoticed, and unsung.

Is the greatest contribution
To the welfare of our land,
Some jerk who breaks his promise
And cons his fellow man?

Or the ordinary fellow
Who in times of war and strife,
Goes off to serve his country
And offers up his life?

The politician's stipend
And the style in which he lives,
Are often disproportionate,
To the service that he gives.

While the ordinary Soldier,
Who offered up his all,
Is paid off with a medal
And perhaps a pension, small.

It's so easy to forget them,
For it is so many times
That our Bobs and Jacks and Johnnos,
Went to battle, but we know,

It is not the politicians
With their compromise and ploys,
Who won for us the freedom
That our country now enjoys.

Should you find yourself in danger,
With your enemies at hand,
Would you really want some cop-out,
With his ever waffling stand?

Or would you want a Soldier--
His home, his country, his kin,
Just a common Soldier,
Who would fight until the end.

He was just a common Soldier,
And his ranks are growing thin,
But his presence should remind us
We may need his like again.

For when countries are in conflict,
We find the Soldier's part
Is to clean up all the troubles
That the politicians start.

If we cannot do him honor
While he's here to hear the praise,
Then at least let's give him homage
At the ending of his days

Perhaps just a simple headline
In the paper that might say:
"OUR COUNTRY IS IN MOURNING
FOR A SOLDIER DIED TODAY”

I was listening to some talkback on ABC radio on this yesterday. The usual Yaris drivers were all piling on with their ill informed nonsense but one guy really made me spill my latte. He was saying that when he was taught to drive he was told to keep his eyes focussed 3 cars ahead. Now with "these vehicles" on the road he has no option but to tailgate them in order to meet that goal. Apparently he can't back off a bit. Not sure how he copes with semis, vans, fire engines, etc etc.

In a nutshell the stats don't stack up. Speed, alcohol/drugs, fatigue, and dear little munchkins who drive vehicles they don't own with a heap of their friends inside when mummy and daddy haven't long taken the training wheels off their bikes lead the stats.

If anyone does the maths they'll soon realise that their proposed levy pales into insignificance against the costs we pay to buy, modify, run, service, insure our vehicles.

As ULEZ (Ultra Low Emission Zone) cameras proliferate across the UK’s capital city, we are now seeing a new social movement (or anti-social, depending how you look at it) rise in response. British police are reporting hundreds of the cameras used to enforce ULEZ regulations are now being vandalized, to stop the auto-ticketing.

There is quite a few stats floating around showing that the main driver of Vic fatality rate is rural, regional roads.
Usually as the preface for road safety experts calling for a reduction in open road speed limits from 100km/h to 80km/h.

But I noticed on our last trip that when you get west of Dalby, the highway speed limit has been changed from 100 to 110kph!

I guess they realised that nobody was obeying the 100 limit, so may as well put it up a bit ???

I'm only referring to Vic stats and speed limits.
We only have 110km/h on multilane freeways.

Not completely correct Brij (unless things have changed).

When we went to Mildura in 2019 the speed limit on the Calder changed to 110km/h just north of Wycheproof (or therabouts)....

More than happy to be corrected.

This is from the Vicroads standards (2021) -

Quote
3. A speed limit of 110 km/h can generally only be applied to the highest standard rural roads. To be eligible, a road shall
satisfy ALL of the following criteria:
a. Perform an interstate or inter-regional transport function AND
b. Be a divided arterial road or freeway / motorway / tollway with a design speed of 120 km/h AND
c. Have full access control AND
d. Have sealed shoulders and appropriate roadside AND
e. Have a low crash risk determined by a formal road safety risk assessment utilising risk assessment tools
such as IRR.

Impacted sections of the 20 kilometres of track between the Poverty Creek turn-off and the Fort Bribie Day-Use Area have been raised and rock inverts installed to reduce the chance of closures after future rain events."

That is exactly the same note they leave here. We have alway kept a big tyre pump in my wife’s SUV. The Land Rover has onboard air so not a big problem for us.

I was considering printing a note pointing out that we will need to burn fuel to pump the tyres up again. However, I can’t really be arsed and the likelihood of us being affected where we live is slim. They only seem to be targeting urban areas.

Having said that, we’ve left my wife’s car in an airport car park for a fortnight. So, it could happen.

With the cost of living increases, higher mortgages etc the tourism accommodation market would already be suffering, so let’s tax them, what a knob. A feeble attempt at raising revenue or getting landlords to sell their properties to assist in lessening housing crisis.

I often wonder how far these people go for their beliefs, do they own vehicles of any description, are their clothes all natural fibres, ist their footwear leather only, do they grow and process their own food, are there any plastics in  their homes. I wonder how much they actually sacrifice when they carefully research where and from what they use is made and ultimately how it is transported to them. I’m sure they don’t all get around on horse and carts.

Hold a seat for me Hairs. What a great time this kid will have at school....

Weeks later, Drysdale got quite the push present when the official birth certificate arrived in the mail, with ‘Methamphetamine Rules’ listed as her son’s given name.
...
Thankfully, the Registrar admitted it was a rare oversight, and Drysdale’s son’s real, “normal” name should be approved any day now.
...
They added that names registered at birth remain on the register “forever, even if the name is formally changed”

Can anyone explain in simple terms what this means? Does it mean he didnt know stabbing someone to death was wrong?

A Melbourne teenager has been found not guilty of the murder 16-year-old Declan Cutler due to his young age — sparking anger from the victim’s family in court.

The 14-year-old, who was 13 at the time of the 2022 stabbing attack of Declan, was cleared of murder at a judge-only trial at Victoria’s Supreme Court on Wednesday.

The judge said there was “reasonable possibility” the boy, who can not be named for legal reasons, did not know that his conduct was “seriously wrong in a moral sense”

Im very confused (https://www.news.com.au/national/courts-law/teen-not-guilty-of-murder-of-declan-cutler-due-to-young-age/news-story/0efe80d15767ea008ac23420128ede6d)

The accused seem to get all the "rights", and the victims .......... are just victims. I think it's pretty obvious today, despite what the learned judge said, that kids definitely do know right from wrong, "in the moral sense", from well before being teenagers.

Thing is... the site where the batteries are burning had absolutely no fire detection or prevention. Nothing at all to detect thermal runaway knowing full well that was a possibility. Them in charge just figured "**** it, if that happens, the CFA can handle it." Meanwhile how many CFA members and units are out of action for days/weeks until it is deemed safe? Not to mention the noxious gases it is spewing out and the poisons being flushed into the waterways.
Don't misunderstand me, I'm not against this technology. I just feel the companies making a squillion dollars from these projects need to take safety a whole lot more seriously instead of letting us tax payers clean up their mess and putting our volunteer fires under even more pressure.

Saw in a local fb group, a chick inviting people to a camp weekend up river from Dalmorton(NSW). A weekend of music, a 'Big Fire', come along it will be fun.
A bloke chipped her about the fire, well didn't she go off, "What business is it of yours" she asked.
People tried to politely tell her all open fires are banned atm.
She wouldn't have part of it, stating she was going to anyway.
We were up that a couple of weeks ago, the country is remote, dry and it wouldn't take much to burn.
Our Brigrade has been active, informing locals here of the risks, yet some self entitled fool, believes they know better.

Yeah you look at where the fires are at around here and you'll see they are where the camp sites are. With the winds gusting to 80 - 90km/h over the last couple of days it doesn't take a rocket surgeon to work out.

I was CL at a fairly serious fire near houses up the park once.. this new local came up abusing me for the amount of smoke that was around as if it was my fault... - note: not even blowing his direction.  i said this is what happens when bush burns for first time in years (I think round 10yrs) and kids play with matches.

He kept on carrying on saying take the park away if this is going to happen- I was polite to start with and I ended up suggesting he start a petition and write a letter to the prime minister to remove the Park completely ... Lucky there were a few long term locals to took it from there telling him to sell up an **** off as the parks been there a willion years before Cook landed there.

Key points:

Mr Griffith has been charged has with 136 counts of rape and 110 counts of sexual intercourse with a child under 10
The case will be heard in court again on November 6

While hamas has along  history of conflict with Israel, previously Hamas was not the legally elected government of Palestinian. They have now as the ruling government declared war as a country against another country, putting the whole population from the Gaza Strip into a war.

I still marvel at how many muppets think it's safe to tow a van heavier than their vehicle coz the sales brochure says it can tow 3.5t.
Even with the landbarge as a tug, I didnt consider anything over 2.5t when we bought our van.

See Matt,
That is the difference between a few of us & the majority that believe they know.

I've never understood how how someone can drive a car all their life, retire, buy a 4wd & caravan and it the road.
As many Swaggers who drive trucks & heavy vehicles for a living know, why isn't there a driving test to tow, anything.

Queenslanders warned of fines for towing overweight caravans | 7 News Australia

Yep, there's a reasonably strong campaign going on in Qld (mainly in the South East region) with fairly regular "pop up" weight check stations appearing on weekends in popular caravan areas. So far it's all been about education, but enforcement will come soon. https://www.abc.net.au/news/2023-10-12/queensland-caravan-owners-weight-regulations-towing-skills/102932800 (https://www.abc.net.au/news/2023-10-12/queensland-caravan-owners-weight-regulations-towing-skills/102932800)
Quote
In Queensland, an estimated 90 per cent of vehicles towing their caravans exceeded their weight limit when tested recently, according to the Queensland Police Service.

We've recently sold our Complete Campsite & are waiting on delivery of a new van (yep, we've gone to the dark side). Everything that came out of our old one is in a pile in the shed & the other week I weighed everything.
Stuff from the external storage totalled 163kg
3 chairs 17kg
table 6kg
ground sheet 8kg
solar panel 11kg
shade wall 2kg
poles, pegs, ropes 5kg
camp oven & bits 16kg
tool box 8kg
chainsaw & drill 7kg
hose, sullage pipe, & electrical cords 9kg
axe & shovel 3kg
ziggy bbq 15kg
awning & antiflap kit 24kg
miscelaneous assorted crap 32kg

Inside stuff totalled 98kg
bedding 10kg
pantry food staples 20kg
bathroom stuff & towels 11kg
coffee pod machine 3kg
kitchen cooking items 25kg
plates, cups, cutlery etc 17kg
miscelanious assorted crap 12kg

allow another 365 kg for-
beer wine & drinks 30kg
clothes for 3 people 30kg
water 260kg
gas 5kg
diesel 10kg
perishable groceries 30kg

I'm calculating that when packed for a trip we'll be carrying around 630kg of stuff, which is surprisingly high but still well below our 800kg payload. It's quite the eye opener when you start digging  into just how much crap we seem to accumulate, I'll be having a serious cull of things when it goes into the new van, but honestly don't think It'll make a significant difference to the total. Once loaded, I'll be getting a proper weight check. I've done the same exercise a few years ago with our old conqueror fully loaded for a 4 week trip. Turned out the car was well under, but the trailer was 300kg over. Ever since then I've tried to be conscious of what what I'm carrying, but crap just seems to find it's way into the camper over time  >:(

I weighed everything.

I did the same thing when we went over a weighbridge with the old van & found we were way overweight :'(

Pulled everything out, weighed it & found that "exterior" items (tools, poles, gas, chairs etc) came to 230kg, with another 220kg for "interior" (pots & pans, food, drinks, clothes etc) :o :'(

After a massive culling exercise, we went through a free weight-check program that RACQ ran early this year & came in at 10kg under our allowance ;D

Definitely worth while doing if you spot one in your area!

Whilst I don't disagree with you Hairs and I think these protesters will look back on their actions in 20 years and reflect that they really were naive, you have to admit we aren't exactly leaving them a world in great shape. The pollies (God bless em) should be well aware that many of these protesters will be voting at the next election. Unless the current mob can persuade them not to, they will be voting for anyone with a green streak in their policies. Heaven help us.

Like her or loathe her you have to admit Greta Thunberg, as a naive kid, got / gets a lot of attention. We who have many years of lived experience can find holes in her arguments but nevertheless she is being heard.

I don't think the kids and their views are going to disappear and whoever is revving them up will take solice from the numbers who protested this week.

We were out in the Grampians and Mt Cole area over the weekend photographing a variety of wildflowers among other things and I noticed in several locations, both in the Grampians and Mt Cole (on Mt Cole, notably in areas around the TV transmission towers) some relatively large quantities of the fired remains of the old black plastic 7.62mm blank from SLR/M60 days. Didn't see any old link though, but may have rusted away.

Clearly a training area and I would think the scenario would be defending the towers from a determined enemy! The use of (at least to me) what looks like mortars, even training ones would, I think be unlikely there.

Mentioned earlier this year that we'd taken the old van through a FREE!!! weight & safety check organised by Caravanning Qld.

Just got an e-mail through to say that they're running them again in the New Year:

https://www.caravanqld.com.au/vansafe/ (https://www.caravanqld.com.au/vansafe/)

You don't have to be a member of CQ, RACQ or anybody else, just register for it & rock up at the appropriate time on the day! ;D

Well & truly worth the effort of throwing a bit of extra weight in the CT / van to get it up to normal touring load, & find out for sure that you're legal or otherwise. & while their are Transport weighties doing it, there are no penalties handed out if they find a problem, only advice! :cup:

Highly recommend that you give it a go if it's on in your area!

This was at the entrance to the camping ground at Somerset Dam, & have seen similar on the Sunshine Coast, just back from the beach!

A lot of years ago i worked at the Caloundra city Council and we had procedures for UneXploded Ordinance (UXO) as it was a reasonably common occurrence around Currimundi I think. All came from Battery Hill in Caloundra and they used to fire Northwards for practice.

Remember one customer service worker giving me a call saying an old bloke had just walked in and said he had one in his boot and where should he take it. She was a bit shocked and we kicked the procedures into gear and was all managed. His statement to the authorities was something along the lines of 'was digging up his garden bed and hit something solid with his shovel and when he uncovered he saw what it was and thought he needed to hand it in to someone so he brought it to the council in the boot of his car to find out where to take it'.

I remember thinking that the thought process was a bit interesting  ;D.

Ah the good old days

Similar story I remember from the GC, probably in the 70s.

This particular day was a very low tide, & there's a bloke working on one of the trawlers, moored near where SeaWorld is now.

He has a look over the side & spots a long, skinny shape on the bottom. Nobody can work out what it is, so one of them dives in & finds that it's a 500lb (250kg) bomb! :o Called the :police:, who called Air Force bomb disposal, who came down, lifted it into a rubber raft, towed it out to the middle of the Broadwater, sank it again & blew it. Water spout a couple of 00' high!

Best guess is that a trawler had picked it up out off Straddie, brought it back tangled in their net, eventually got it free, then just dropped it over the side! ::) Anybody's guess as to how long it had been sitting there though.

Post war, lots of stuff was "disposed of" out off Cape Moreton. Once the bay trawlers started working the deeper waters in the 70's a lot of this stuff got found in the nets and it was actually a common thing for the trawlers to just dump it again outside of the trawl areas. My dad trawled a lot in the area during that ere & I've seen some mortar shells that he'd found & have heard stories of phosphorous bombs coming up in the nets.

Already a huge backlash here, it won’t get up, just another thought bubble from some back room woke idiot. Not only were they targeting Anzac Day,but Christmas Day as well. It was aimed at gazetting all fixed date public holidays, Xmas, Anzac Day, Australia Day by date not by name.

I'm not arguing about it, as I'm mentally and physically burnt out.  :'( Still not getting excited, as there is some much crap that can still go down between now and then.  ;)

I pitched this as an idea and was told in no uncertain terms that granny was staying inside the house. Also if I liked the idea so much we could build a PA flat

We happily live in our granny flat whilst renting out the palace. It over come the problem that planning approvals at the time says that you can’t rent the granny flat but it didn’t say anything about renting the primary dwelling.

The same approval didn’t say anything about renting the primary dwelling to a non family member.

This just popped up in my local news feed. Tragic outcome for two young men.

Anyone got access to the full article or have any other detail?

Ironically my parents came across the BC rd a few days before that crash. When catching up with them over that weekend Dad was saying what a great drive it was, whilst Mum was saying what a horrible rd and she never wanted to see it again. She actually said that if you ran off the rd you might not be found for days...........Then the news reported the crash. No holding Mum back now on the proof of what a shocking rd it is.

I'm still in the process of trying to obtain a small compensation fee from a class action from a previous car.

Even though i supplied all the relevant information including the bank details, somehow they say the bank details have gone missing or I didn't supply the correct details {I've had these same banking details for 38years} so I highly doubt I would have submitted the wrong banking details.

A terrible tragedy, but I was bemused at the sheer laziness of the Daily Mail's use of stock photos - this one had no similarities to the story at all  ... AI generated perhaps?(https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20231221/e47d5085392d673bc0495223f1e5ac92.jpg)

I think it was said back then that they were putting the same airbags back in, but seeing that these were new, that would give them another 10 years of life, by which time most of those cars would be off the road, then rinse & repeat for any still being driven ???

Yeah we have a 2005 Mazda6 that had that done. From memory the paperwork said replacement was the same model Takata airbag.
Son is driving it now. So not sure how long it will last :)

Interesting.

New law puts popular tradie utes, American trucks under threat

New engine emission rules have been quietly introduced and could spell the end for Australia’s most popular utes, SUVs and 4WDs as we know them.

Australia is set to overhaul its automotive landscape, potentially bidding farewell to the era of top-selling cars such as the Toyota HiLux ute, beloved SUVs, and colossal American pick-up trucks.

The catalyst for this transformation comes from new laws announced by the Federal Government, which mandate stringent emission standards for petrol and diesel-powered vehicles.

These regulations, aligned with ‘Euro 6d’ standards, are scheduled to be enforced starting in 2025, accompanied by upgrades to the quality of locally sold petrol.

The overarching goal is to bring Australia in line with emission standards already embraced by Europe.

Technically a rubber stamp, we don’t make cars in Australia, our market is too small for the big guys to even worry about. Yes we get the residual equipment left over that doesn’t meet the euro 6 emission standards. However all the big manufacturers already have vehicles that do meet them and we will get these, that’s why the 300 landcruiser doesn’t come with a V8.
No big surprises with this legislation.
