Made good progress in the last couple of days.

Got my 3 phase hooked up in the shed late last week. I was so excited while helping the sparky pull the new 4 core 10mm2 + earth, big round cable over to the board.

All set now; 10amp and 15amp single phase, with 32a three phase...

My new office has power and data sorted, just need to pick up the sheets to line it.

This weekend I stripped out the old work bench and some piles of junk that I had been calling ‘storage’...
Then insulated and lined the workshop area.

Must be something about being a boily and playing with timber for too long...
It seams to bring out the inner chippy in me..

The new work bench is taking shape now.

Only one 3 phase outlet .  ??? ??? ??? ??? ??? ??? ??? ??? ???

3 phase drills, compressors and welders are nearly always cheaper than single phase to buy .

You know I had always heard that. Been actively seeking a MIG welder and drill press lately and gotta say 3 phase stuff wasn’t jumping out at me. I haven’t really found much and what I have found hasn’t been anything special.

I’ve pretty much reserved the 3 phase for if I ever get to have a decent lathe or mill/drill.

Unless you got some tips for me on where the cheap 3 phase stuff is at these days?????

Thinking about getting 3 phase hooked up at my house in Brisbane...

Does anyone know what the suppliers charge to run it from the pole to your meter box?

And I understand that getting 3 phase will give you 100 amps per phase, x 3 phases...

Is that correct??

Many thanks

Not so much price but 3 phase gear tends to have better specs, such as much higher duty cycles for welders etc

I can’t recall what the cost was to get the 3 phase mains onto our property, it was a whole new connection for us and I never considered just going single phase so I don’t know the price difference between single and 3 phase.
I’d imagine they’ll sting you for an upgrade compared to a clean new connection.

I’m not certain, but the 100 amps per phase sounds about right, I’m sure there’s others on here that know for sure.
Apparently the cable size from the main board (on the property boundary) to the sub board on the house only lets me run somewhere around 80 or 90 amps per phase. But that is more then enough for my domestic consumption.

nah....   the van hasn't had a holiday in nearly a year...

I've been bogged down trying to get a major house Reno off the ground, ( well that's my excuse anyway)..

Very sad though....

(but re the Anaconda sighting -  the van's in a lock up atm; so I better check if it's still there, in case someone took it on a holiday without me   ....what the freak)..

You would want to ask your self if you really need it.

In NSW it would be considered contestable works and the joint I currently work for you wouldn't see change from 5k

Not sure how it work in QLD or in your particular area.

No way will I be getting it (3 phase) - if it's anywhere near $5K to run it the 4mtrs from the street pole...

I'll ring Origin or Energex and make some enquiries when I get a moment....

I was lucky , I got the 3 phase to my house for nothing . Ergon , ( after 25 plus years ) could not get there minimum voltage supply amount to my home , they had run 3 phase along the poles , fitted a new transformer to the pole across from my place , but they still could not get the numbers high enough , from memory they could not get above 228 volts.

Ergon sent me a letter ( years ago ) stating that they would run 2 phase to my home for nothing , so when I want to build my big shed , I contacted them an asked if 3 phase would be possible .

After paying a non- refundable $ 250 application fee , and several phone calls later ( Ergon had problems going back far enough in their system to find the letter of offer for 2 phase ) I received a phone call from Ergon stating they would supply me the 3 phase at no cost and they were going to reimburse me the $250 non-refundable application fee.

I did have to upgrade my Power Box and have a sparkie ( My now son in law ) spread the power throughout the house over the 3 phases , BaseCamp -this is a cost that that you need to get quoted by your electrician if you are intending to get 3 phase

Just had to do the reverse in my board.
Because we have 3 phase from the street the load is spread across all phases in the board for the house.
Now I just installed a caravan plug in the main board for my genny back up, we had to put everything I wanted to run in an emergency on the same phase.
I didn’t even consider this when I bought the single phase genny.

Fortunately it wasn’t a big deal, just had to swap the oven and the lights over. That gave me my water pump, 5 power outlets in the kitchen/lounge and all of my lights on the same phase to run off the genny.

I asked the sparky about putting too much onto one phase, he laughed and pointed out that in a normal house everything in my board would be running off a single phase. ;)
At least now I know I’m fine with one phase that basically only runs my fish tank and charges the cordless vacuum and my electric toothbrush.... ;D ;D

Sounds like you guys have put some thought into it....

I am considering 3 phase as this sparky quoting on the upcoming major reno at my place has quoted to run 3 phase from the board...

Plus there's the potentiality of the reno having 3 or 4 pieces of gear that will pull about 32 amps each, (if all on together)...

Then suddenly plug in the toaster and the kettle (if only on single phase) -- and it'll be a Homer Simpson moment - (neighbourhood blacks out,  haha)...

I have been told that normally a house gets 100 amps on a single phase into the board...   and the new trendy apartments being built around town only have 45 amps into each apartment - OMG....   (with centralised body corporate air con, which is a confusing idea to start with imho)...

Dan Murphys carpark is my new shed.

Just spent the last few hours replacing a radiator in one, after limping off the road when the neck cracked on the top tank.

Very handy for replenishing your fluids while working on the car....
