I'm thinking of buying an ipad to use as GPS and mapping. Can anyone tell me if they do the same and does GPS work when out of range of networks. I hope to be able to use it in Australian outback where there is no network

There is now an ipad mini which is 7" and would be better suited to in vehicle I reckon. Also comes in a 3g model.

What is the situation with Android (Asus Nexus, Samsung etc) tablets?

I know Ozi Explorer are bringing out software for the iPad but when I don't know. I had a netbook last year with moving maps and a magnetic mounted GPS which worked great. But the iPad would be more suitable.

I have an iPad with hema maps loaded. I bought a ram mount to allow it to be mounted in the vehicle. Works great.

Well it appears that Ozi explorer have brought the software for android but not for iPad yet. Might try the Hema maps. How did you download the maps? Through an app?

Only iPads with 3G have a GPS http://www.apple.com/ipad/specs/ (http://www.apple.com/ipad/specs/) ... this includes all generations of iPads and the new iPad mini.
GPS does work outside of 3G coverage (slower to initially determine you position, but otherwise all good). Note that using a WiFi-only iPad in the city may trick some into thinking it has a GPS as it uses crowd-sourced location information of WiFi routers to determine your position.
Some Android tablets come with inbuilt GPS, others don't.
I purchased one off AliExpress which stated it has a GPS, but it doesn't (damn shame, it's a great tablet, great screen, was only about $140, just a shame it doesn't have the GPS).

I too use an iPad & the HEMA App 'out bush'. It works well.
The App is a large one about 1.7 gig, and includes maps for the entire country, including the DESERT series.

I use the HEMA map app on the iPad and it works fine out of cellular range.
I also have the Tomtom app and this also is good for turn by turn navigation.
The handy thing is that if you have an iPhone the apps work just as we'll on those and the benefit of having them on your phone is that you usually always carry your phone so you don't tend to forget it. Because the apps have the map info stored on the device you can even use them on a later generation iPod to use as stand alone maps without the GPS capacities.

We use our Samsung with Ozie for a play - works well. Yes they do work out of cell range as they are only interested in the Sats (well mostly)

I have a new Samsung Galaxy 2 which I run Android for Oziexplorer and I now run the 4WD Raster Map collection 2011/Hema Maps. Works great with a brilliant screen resolution, but this one does not have 3G. I use it for all my internet connections when we go away.

I just ordered mine over the net & had it within the week.
It's also meant to work with with other Bluetooth devices too but I haven't tried it with my laptop.
