Title: Is it just me, or is everyone upgrading to vans?
Post by: SEADOO on June 18, 2018, 12:00:22 PM
I've noticed everybody and the market is leaning towards vans and hybrids these days?

I'm 4 years from celebrating half a century on my score board and I'm leaning towards a van too.

Are the soft floor campers history now?

Yep, I can't sell. I'd be lucky to get $5k for it now (insured for $25k).

It's a market transition that has been going on for a few years now. https://www.caravancampingsales.com.au/editorial/details/aussie-campers-hit-hard-times-58408/ (https://www.caravancampingsales.com.au/editorial/details/aussie-campers-hit-hard-times-58408/)

Caravans have always been around, I spent the first 4 years of my life in one, but camping has been through a massive transition over the last decade. Evolving market demand has bought about a whole heap of product changes in a hell of a hurry. Seems that just 10-15 years ago everybody had tents, tarps, ice filled eskies, and gas lanterns - and only the enthusiasts went camping. Camper trailers really opened up the camping market a little over a decade ago to a whole new demographic so a lot of people who had never before been campers were drawn into the market. Now all of those camper-trailer customers have grown up (as has their disposable income) and are now seeking a little less canvas, hence the massive influx of hybrid type trailers on the market now.

Just my take on things. My personal camping style has evolved from tent, to rear fold, to hybrid, and now I'm thinking about the next evolution  ;D

Are the soft floor campers history now?

You reckoned you wanted a van back in Jan this year when I was selling mine.
You said you were going to watch it closely and I never heard a word ever again.
You also wanted to swap a soft floor for a van at one point as well, if I remember it correctly.

I did, but unfortunately I am unable to upgrade to a van till I off load mine.

Yes, I was watching with interest, but like a lot of second hand vans, people still ask new prices for them.

It sold in 3 weeks, so you might need to rethink, how much you consider things are worth.

Besides, this thread isn't about you and me.

I still think there is a market for soft floor campers. We just bought our first after borrowing a mates for a few years whenever we needed it.
Reasons why I chose a soft floor over a van:
1. I feel like I'm closer to nature rather than locked up inside a house on wheels.
2. More room, especially with 2 kids and 3rd on the way.
3. A whole 7x4 trailer of storage which is brilliant with kids.
4. It will go anywhere my 4wd can drag it.
5. Price was a huge factor. A reasonable quality van is about double the price.
6. Much more pleasant to tow.
7. I can get it up my steep driveway and under my low carport (unique criteria, but an influence for me)

I think the industry took a huge hit with the plethora of cheap campers from China which knocked the stuffing out of the second hand market.
Hybrids seem to be on the rise though, but still quite expensive so out of reach of many families.

I think it all depends on what type of camping your intending on doing. For me personally I’m 50 and not ready for caravan park camping just yet as still prefer remote beach camping. So the Camper Trailer is perfect as you just can’t get Vans into some of the places we visit.

So for me I’m going to keep the Camper Trailer for as long as I can (which is still in perfect condition) and then when I do start slowing down I have  a feeling my kids (especially my Son) will start using it.

At one stage I did think about  a forward fold/hybrid, but being a tight ar$e I couldn’t justify the extra thousands of dollars to save an extra 30 minutes set up/pack down time. Plus the extra weight of these trailers just make it that much harder getting into some of the beach camping spots.

So would prefer to just keep it instead of basically giving it away.

I did on Saturday morning.  I purchased an 18ft dual Jayco Discovery of a work  mate. Needs a good scrub and some tlc but i got it cheap cheap. It will come up a treat.  Now to get rid of the soft floor.
Cheers,  Mike.

There is certainly a shift up the swag to caravan progression taking place, just have to look at the manufacturers to see that's what is happening. I think a couple of the things that play into this are the baby boomers are getting older/softer and they are hitting retirement age so happy to spend the larger amounts required for a caravan from their retirement nest egg, to buy something to fulfil lifelong dreams of travelling, also with modern manufacturing techniques, the price of luxury caravans are within reach of a lot more.

I think some factors that make it seem bigger than it actually is though, the vast majority of camper trailer users wouldn't think about going on a forum about them, it's more "enthusiasts"  on here, and they are more likely to spend the money to upgrade as getting away/traveling is more what they are into, also, as you get older, so do people you know so it increases the likelihood of people you know moving to van's.

There is a definite shift but how much of that is due to the ageing population and the typical preference for comfort that comes with it, and how much of that has to do with a general shift in the market is hard to quantify.

Hi,
Yep, I've been camping in the Tas Highlands with the kids on the June LWE for the past 20 years.
Last weekend the youngest turned up with a van instead of a tent.
Next thing will be a diesel heater I suppose.

I am upgrading from a hard floor camper to a hybrid van. At age 69 I need a bit more comfort plus a shower and toilet. The added plusses are:

1. Being able to pack up wet.
2. Ability to have a rest stop with a convenient kitchen.
3. Much more pleasant in windy cold weather.
4. Works as a guest room.

I'm a lazy bugger so we have sold our hard floor camper and will almost certainly get a hybrid for our next purchase. Laziness and the fact that the kids have grown up so it is only LB and me.

Not quite ready for a full van.

We will too at some stage. We are doing a 5 week whirlwind 1/2 lap in about 11 weeks time and have hired a Jayco Starcraft 16 footer with shower , toilet and the ability to free camp. This will give us a taste of things to come. We used the camper trailer on the long weekend in the rain at Mt Beauty which doesn't worry me too much but the wife is looking for more comfort these days. Natural progression I think- from cabins ,tents, swags and camper particularly when the kids were young.

we went from a custom soft floor to a 2nd hand Goldstream Wing1. The main reason being that the soft floor was just too big for the two of us. We didn't need a setup with a double bed and with room for four more beds in the tent plus a full length annex, hence the Goldie.
We were lucky though as a young nephew, who has two young kiddies, was more than happy to take the soft floor of our hands at a good price for both parties. His missus and kids love it so, he's a happy man.

Australian camper trailer manufactuers only have themselves to blame

Why on earth would i pay up to $47k for a brand new hard floor camper from 2 reputable Australian brands when for another 10K more i am in new off-road caravan territory

Fair enough. All depends if you want a quality camper or a cheap van I guess. At this stage I will still go with the quality camper.

Is it just me, or is everyone upgrading to vans?

Nope.
You must be just hanging around with a lot of old people these days.....

Seriously though...
There’s obviously a massive market for caravans, driving between Brisbane and the Sunshine Coast you go past the 5 or so caravan shops with literally 1000s of vans parked out front in the 1km stretch of highway makes that pretty clear.

I don’t begrudge people getting old and wanting a few comforts when they travel.
Just as I don’t expect everyone to love the bush as much as I do and can accept that some people actually like staying at caravan parks.

It would be nice if the above people realized that the rest of the world is not retired or on holidays and stopped choking our highways with their monstrosities so we can get on with our normal lives.

There’s still heaps of us left that have no interest in dragging around a rolling road block. We still love going places that even the best “off road” caravan has absolutely no chance of getting into.

Yep I am thinking of upgrading. Gonna replace that home made awning with one of those flash fold out ones. Maybe even get a portable dunny if I can fit it in.  ;D

Went to the Bris camping show & noticed at least one manufacturer had lots of vans with sold stickers on them. Some had multiple sold stickers on them.

$57K is the lower end of the market these days....was down at Lifestyle on Saturday looking at a possible future purchase, i have it on good authority that $80K is the average spend of most people buying there these days, and thier new van we looked at whilst there is more like $115K

Our history

Tents to caravan (young kids)

Caravan to soft floor camper (older kids)

Soft floor camper to 4WD pop top camper.....(just the two of us) no towing, minimalist approach.....will do us for the time being.

At the Brisbane show there still seem to be plenty of punters strolling around the canvass roof brigade

Long term we would probably look at small 4WD truck

I'm with the downsizing crew.

I have adjusted camping styles quite a few times over the last few years. This is because I decided to buy a nice boat instead of a nice caravan. What I have learnt is that for me camping is fun when its really simple. One day I will look at towing a brick around the country but hopefully by then there is a really compact but very comfortable compromise that suits two people.

I Am only 54 and I went from Tenting it to a old Jayco pop up van I did up for my local camping and my trips away with the wife and kids with no boat, And for the the Northern sorties with my mates I still tow my 5m tinny with 60hp 4/ on the back and use a tent as it never rains up north in winter and there nothing like that bit bigger boat for traverling up the remote coasts lines 50 to 60ks looking around at things, When I am older I will take the van and smaller tinny, That would change if I won lotto though upgrade the tug and to lowest and not so wide Hybread offroad van and 4,2m tinny on top of the tug, Craig

Spada's take on things is pretty close to a lot of people's circumstances.
Our personal decision on going small hybrid style was also influenced by the fact that we aren't doing weekend trips.
We go for long trips weeks or months at a time including remote areas. Quick set up time with minimal canvas was a must. Our van packs lots of comforts in 14.5ft. But being only 2 metres wide and lots of clearance means its goes lots of places. We live outside most of the time, but when your on the road for a while, theres times you need to be inside.
Maybe I just need to admit I'm getting old and soft?

Cheers Glen

The annual lemming march is on around Cairns at the moment.  I,ve traveled all over Oz ans still prefer the tent/camper trailer set up. I cant believe the momentum of the modern glamping brigade spending hundreds of thousands on wankish huge vans/rigs just to stay on the bitumen and caravan parks. I,m no spring chicken but isn't camping supposed to be getting out into nature with fewer creature comforts and living with nature.  Had 4 in a row rigs yesterday all holding up traffic and just infuriating every motorist on the highway. The radio language was very colourful.  Dont think any of the rig owners had their radio on though!!.  I,ve got the money to buy a big monstrosity but why would I? Keep it simplish !

each to thier own IMO....i don't get why so many people care or judge these days what other people own and how they "go camping"....why do they have to "rough it" if they don't want to?. For as long as I can remember there has always been people camping different ways, caravan parks aren't a modern thing after all and the bush has always been there. What's wankish to some is basic comfort  to others, different strokes for different folks as they say. Access to many once "remote areas" is easier to get to now, so easier to take the comforts of home with you also. As to thier driving styles.... that's a different kettle of fish, but I've been held up by groups of people not towing aswell as towing, many don't really think when travelling in a convoy it seems, just more concentrate on what thier group is doing.

We considered caravans/hybrids before choosing to go with our hardfloor. We could have purchased a second hand bushtracker or similar for the price of the hardfloor. .

Have borrowed my parents 17ish foot pop top a few times in the past but I prefer the camping feel of canvas and an outdoor kitchen.

Main reasons for staying with a camper.

1. Liability off-road, no matter how good your vans suspension and how good your tow vehicle, size and weight becomes a liability in off-road situations. Bigger and heavier is not better if your getting off the blacktop and into real low range territory.

2. Storage, we wanted to keep our trailer in the garage, fits easily in our standard size 6x6 garage, this makes packing for trips or heading out on a last minute trip easy

3. Canvas, my wife and still want that camping/outdoors feel that comes with canvas, I like outdoor living, I like outdoor cooking, I am happy to suffer the elements along the way (flies, heat, cold, rain etc.) Many want the warm dry security a caravan offers and that fine.

For how we camp and what we enjoy the main drawback of a camper is setup time when compared to a full height caravan. That’s why we went with the fastest and easiest camper trailer we could find. It’s not as fast as a caravan but it’s not much slower either.

I think it’s horses for courses, many people are happy to stick to the road well travelled and like their creature comforts along the way. Living close to Vic’s high country I wanted the ability to get to some of the more secluded and pretty campsites the region has to offer, for me the smaller CT is the better choice for that aactivity.

Coming East back into Bourke last winter for our first taste of bitumen and humanity in 3 weeks further out was a bit of an eye opener. I don't see a van as an upgrade, but a bigger compromise and more of a hindrance to where I want to go - away from caravanners and van parks.

No i agree i also think this is also coming around because of more work flexibility so instead of only getting your 4 weeks a year off there are more options to do longer trips. I am in the same descision process as we are buying a house at the moment so our camping trips will go back to weekenders so do i stick with the origional idea of a small van or go back to a camper

We have just changed to a van from a softfloor. I just found we weren't getting away in the camper as it was just a pain to set up for the 6 of us.
We actually traded the camper to the people we bought the van off so that worked out really well.
Did the first trip the other weekend to Cape Hillsborough and it was great to back in and be set up in less than 20 min. I will miss the drifta kitchen though.

Wife and I upgraded to a hybrid for the creature comforts.
Also has shower and toilet inside and kitchen outside.
Funny enough the people who bought our camper are downsizing from a 20’ caravan because they can’t get into their favourite fishing spots...

I’m a slow moving person when it comes to fashion, so we’v just upgraded from a lifestyle explorer to a lifestyle extenda soft floor. After our basic & easy to set up no frills camper, this one is a pain in the arse to set up but very comfy & a lot bigger floor space for the girls. With the condition it’s in & the never ending extras we got with it, pain in the arse or not, we stole it.
A van is next though (still a long while away), I look forward to pulling up & having a cold one straight up on an overnighter

Started with a tent and ute with canopy. No kids no wife
Moved to a tent with box trailer 1 kid 1 wife
Upgraded to Jayco swift, 2 kids same wife
Further upgrade to Jayco Swift same kids same wife
Upgrade Jayco 12 foot expanda, no kids same wife.
Still got that van and wife but age and bladders are calling for a van with toilet
Next move may be a hybrid or a new Jayco 13ft Adventurer. not sure I can afford a new wife.Any replacement will be limited to sub 14ft and 2000kg.
But I still have my swag for me trips and a roof top tent trailer for beach runs.
Suits our needs and budget.

We were impressed when we seen one at the Qld van show. They have taken a Jayco to a new level beyond the outback range. $30-$40 k cheaper than the upmarket hybrids, $10k dearer than a Chinese knock off, negative being they are still a caravan width. About the only option required is a weberQ, Come with lithium power, solar etc.

Started with a tarp and air mattress,
Missus, graduated to a decent tent
Kids, bought a good second hand Customline soft floor, which we love
Currently looking at possible back surgery, so if that happens, we may end up with something like a Modcon Quattro so we're not managing such a big tent.
When the kids are off our hands, I reckon we'll be into a custom made hybrid or a Track Topaz if we could move the kitchen outside

Any replacement will be limited to sub 14ft and 2000kg.

Wife, or caravan?

We started with a cheapo soft floor, in less than 2 years upgraded to swan for far better setup/prep times, as most things are permanently kept in the trailer rather than in plastic tubs that we haul in and out of the trailer. It's also nice to have a clean, dry place to sleep in any weather. In our soft floor when it rained everything got damp and there was no escaping it.
One thing we weren't prepared for is how much extra campfire cooking gear we've had to buy now, as we no longer have an outdoor kitchen, and nobody wants to go inside to cook!

Our dream is the smallest offroad van or poptop we can comfortably live in. Outside kitchen, indoor bathroom not necessary if it has an outside shower, just a clean, dry bed, and maybe a small place to sit on cold rainy days, and we're good. Just gotta get rid of the kids first.

Started with a tent
Bought a jayco Swan
Bought a jayco Starcraft
Now looking for next full bunk van with full ensuite and every other available option 😳
What do I prefer... a swag

Swannie

Similar for us.
Tents to start.
Camper Trailer.
Pop top Van.
Going to house on 12 acres next. (don't have to travel to get away from everyone.  :D

Always been a camper, mainly with a small 3 baby tent (have to be really good mates to be 3 man) strapped across the gearsack rack on the bike with a frypan on the fire as my cooking gear.
After getting married the same gear went into the back of the Subie along with some new additions for the other half

Upgraded to a 2nd hand Trackie and used that for a fair while until life fell apart and it's now only me (mostly until recently) so the Trackie had to go as I couldn't pack it up with my crook back.
The ute came along for a few years and camped out of the canopy with a swag under the awning. Nice but limiting when you want to stay somewhere for a few days and do day trips.
Looked around for a while at different options. Would have really liked a small hybrid but $$$$ were the killer. I just couldn't afford one.
Then I found an Aussie made Modcon Imperial at the right price and it went straight to the poolroom.
To be honest it fits most of the ticks as far as a hybrid goes but was much more affordable. Time will tell when I hit the road on my lap around Oz.
The biggest problem is the limited kitchen space but currently building a set of drawers in the ute for that.
This will do me for a few years until I can't go camping anymore. The new other half totally approves of it and is always asking when the next adventure will be. Happy other half, happy lfe.

Our neighbours just upgraded from their old slide on with a flash new one, Reckon you would need good mobility as its a decent climb up the ladder steps when on the truck .

Yep some are no better then just a ladder rung while others have very good stairs.  If I was in the position to go that way it would end up being a custom job, incorporating about four current brands.

let's see now...

Started on a Mongoose TwoFour BMX cruiser (the bicycle guys can google that one) with cheap arse racks bolted on and daypacks converted into panniers. Slept in an even cheaper two man "A" frame tent on an equally cheap LiLo. (broke the racks and rear axle out near Griffith)

Moved to a proper mountain bike for a big lap in 92' with a thermorest and a one n a bit man (or one man and two female Austrian backpackers... but that's a different story) lightweight hiking tent and proper panniers and cycle touring gear.

Same bike as above, more lightweight gear for a trip to the Cape in 95' - still just me...

Progressed to a Troopy and sleeping in the back - yep... still just me...

Got me a wife... kept the Troopy.

Moved to a 105 series... same wife. added a roof top tent.

Got rid of the roof top tent and added the "half an 80 series" camper trailer. Same wife, added a dog.

Next step will probably be... a very old (and cheap) 2nd hand Tvan... or something similar.

Gee I don’t know if I could buy a new van or one made in the last 5 years if you have a look at Lemon Caravans on Facebook. It is scary what you could end up being stuck with.
Wow there are some sickening stories on there. I would love a van but will stick with my hard floor camper for now I think.

I'm in the same boat mate. We would love to upgrade to a off road Jayco (can't  afford anything else) but I'm afraid of getting a POS.

At least with our current camper, 2015 Lifestyle Elite Walkthrough, it's built like a brick out house and the canvas will last a life time if looked after. I could sell the camper tomorrow for nothing and purchase a 10 yo Jayco, but I just can't bring myself to give away a perfectly good camper to purchase something unknown.

If we were in the position to afford to loose so much on the current camper and drop $40k on something new, we would tomorrow, but I'm not in that position.

We are in the same boat as many others.
Started with a soft floor, then upgraded to a KK. Loved it, but my wife struggled with the zips , velcro and canvas.
Changed to a Vista Crossover 3 years ago and love it.
Still able to go anywhere with a few extra comforts.
I have suggested that we change to a caravan, but the wife will have none of it.
Happy wife, happy camping.

Gotta go sumtime.  Nobody lives forever.  Rip. Morticia.

I started with School Army Cadets and nylon hootchies back in the 60's.
Progressed, if you call it that, to a 16' Caravan when I married.
Then for various reasons a 6x4 trailer with a canopy was it, with a 10 x 14 Tent for a quite a few years.
I've had the Tvan since 2009, and it's been a great bit of gear.
Having a Caravan was like towing a house around by comparison.

Tried selling the modcon hardfloor for 6 months and got little interest until the day we decided to keep it and save the $$$ that we would have otherwise spent on are on a Hybrid. Will spend a few bucks on it to keep the handbrake pleased for future use and go buy an Aussie muscle car to park in the garage that will appreciate in value.

WTF are these hybrid campers ??? Strictly for hybrid car owners I suppose ::) For the slowpokes and uninitiated they're traditionally called Jayco Doves among other birds of flight and strictly pulled with internal combustion engines but if you're too geriatric to pull out the beds you get the Penguin and a cordless drill before the old folks home. I guess that's why Jayco named it after a flightless bird with a sense of premonition and Gawdelpus a caravan is a pre-paid funeral plan :'(

Not quite sure if I can understand that, but do not agree with your definition of a hybrid camper.
Do not remember any mention of Jayco or birds.

They used to be called Pop Tops, been around for years in various forms.
Salesmen tell 'em it's a new idea (lying through their teeth) and they all flock around..
You make up your own mind, the hype is just "Sales talk".

Here is my classification for Campers/Caravans

Camper Trailer - Soft floor
Camper Trailer - Hard floor
Camper Vans
Caravans
Hybrids
Generally a hybrid of the above categories but usually
Teardrops

Could probably do with further clarification but it's a start.

That didn't fit in my list but I'd say that would be a teardrop camper, might need to add another category. edit now added it.

Yeah, not really. I reckon Tryagain's definitions are pretty spot on. Hybrids have external kitchens and generally don't have the seating etc that caravans do.

I'd agree many are vastly overpriced, but there are options (like the one I have) which are very reasonably priced.

I can tell you, when you pull up to camp when it's absolutely p#$$ing down, you really appreciate just having to unclip the four corners and push the roof up, rather than spending 10 to 20 minutes rooting around with canvas, ropes and pegs in the rain. Ditto when packing up.

Here is my classification for Campers/Caravans

Camper Trailer - Soft floor
  • Canvas walls and roof,
  • Soft floor that folds out onto the ground
  • Can be side fold or rear fold
  • Usually outside kitchen (although can also be inclosed)

Camper Trailer - Hard floor
  • Canvas walls and roof
  • Camper folds out with a hard floor.
  • Can be Forward, Rear or side fold.
  • Usually outside kitchen (although can be enclosed)

Camper Vans
  • Hard roof, canvas walls
  • Inside kitchen
  • Often with slide out beds

Caravans
  • Hard walls hard roof (may have pop up roof section but sides are predominatly hard)
  • Inside Kitchen

Hybrids
Generally a hybrid of the above categories but usually
  • Has a hard roof,
  • Has an outside kitchen
  • Has smaller dimensions than a caravan for better offroad ability.

Teardrops
  • Hard walls and roof but not high enough to stand up in
  • A packed footprint not much larger than the bed
  • Traditionally shaped like a teardrop
  • Has an outside kitchen (can be in the rear or slide out from the side.)

Could probably do with further clarification but it's a start.

Soft floors are often classed as "Tent Trailers".
My '02 Goldstream Wing 1 is factory labelled (and registered) as a "Camper Trailer".

My impression of a "Camper Van" is a Britz Mercedes self drive set up.

I consider this below as an "Hybrid" although the maker states "Pop Top" ??? ;D

I don't think I have ever heard soft floors classifies as "tent trailers" outside of insurance policies so maybe "often" is a bit of a stretch, but yes, there is no set classification so it is a little subjective.
In regards to the Briz Mercedes, the bigger ones I would refer to as motorhomes, but smaller Hiace style ones I would also consider a campervan, just a different one compared to Jayco/Goldtream versions, ie one is a van that has been converted for camping so it's a campervan the other is a cross between a camper trailer and a caravan, hence also a campervan but the meaning of the "van" bit differs.

And yes, that Spinifex I would consider a hybrid.

The definitions are obviously pretty arbitrary, and what is a caravan to one person will be a hybrid, or a camper to someone else.
I'd also consider (based on MY classification) that spinifex to technically be a hybrid due to not having any kitchen stuff inside, but other than that, it is a pop-top caravan. I'd reckon calling it either is reasonable.

My hybrid (National Hermit) is registered and insured as a caravan.

My soft floor (Outback Sturt) is registered as a trailer

We started with a small canvas tent when we had no kids.

Daughter came along and we purchased a Jayco Swan to do half a lap. Ordered new and kept it for a year and a half. Sold it to put the money into a new house after our lap. Spent 138 nights in this one and lost $2000 at resale.

Went back to a canvas cabin tent and tradesmans trailer (to carry all the Shit in) and used that until after our son was born.

Wife went back to work and so we ordered another Swan. We had that one for nearly four years. Spent 133 nights in that one and lost $3000 at resale.

Then we purchased the Prado to pull a full size van. Realised we could go anywhere with the Prado and decided to get a soft floor, Lifestyle Extenda Elite. Had that for seven years before selling it. Spent 242 nights in this one and lost 50% at resale.

The holidays we enjoy are touring holidays where you are moving frequently and we got sick of the big set up and more so the pack up, combined with the fact the daughter is now 18 and doesn't come away much anymore.

Now we have an RV Vista Crossover XL and love it. Stop at camp and set up so bloody quick, same for pack up and we now have a few more comforts we didn't have with the camper trailer. Cape York next year, the planning has already begun.

Our camping styles change depending on our circumstances at the time. We are planning on keeping the Vista until we near retirement age and then buying a full size van for our travels.

After another emotional set up in the rain, we have decided to bite the bullet and take a massive loss on our camper (2015 Lifestyle Elite Walkthrough). For our own sanity, we are selling our $19,500 camper now for $9,500. After watching other families roll up with their hybrids/vans and get on the cans within 20mins of arriving and I'm still setting up the main tent covered in sweat, we both looked at each other and we both said "fk this".....

So now the camper is up for sale, it'll be hard to sell as nobody wants a soft floor these days. We will be upgrading to a pop top type van with the single beds and a single bed/couch t the other end. We have a budget of around $20k. That'll get us something built in late 90's early 2000's.

Normal mods will be Spring over, piss the 3 way fridge off and replace with a good upright 12v fridge. Add a couple of AGM batteries with solar and give it a good clean.

We don't venture off road with it, the spring over is so it won't drag its arse in the drive ways and speed bumps.

Would live a Recon or Ultra, but the dollars won't stretch that far. Anyone want a soft floor camper?

I sold my lifestyle 2005 trailer a few months ago.

My advice is take time with the ad, fresh pics or the trailer setup properly. Clean it up, amazing what a can of gloss kill rust will do to the look of the finish :)

Throw in as much stuff into the sale as possible. Tables, chairs, storage, tarps, whatever you wont need in your new setup. I ended up getting $7500 for mine (asking price), sold it in 3 weeks. TBH however, I am still surprised it is not still sitting in my garage. I feel / know I was VERY lucky that the right person came along at the right time. Advertised on Myswag and Gumtree only. Sold via a free ad on gumtree

I took a $7K loss on my Ezytrail. Did a bit of paint and other work on it and replaced a few poles and so on. Sold on Gumtree in 8 hours. Good presentation, keen pricing location and good luck are the keys.

Hi,
In our 20s it was a motorbike and a hike tent.

In our 30s kids meant a car, bigger tent meant a trailer. One very wet pack up with a 12x12, bikes etc took the shine off that.

In our 40,  bigger kids meant a bigger car, it would tow a van and have room for kids own tents. We hired vans for a few years.

In our 50s the kids were more independent and we had access  to Dad's motor home and the kids could camp with us, but independently.
In our 60s we inherited the motor home and the kids left home. Now we had access to more places to stop around the State if we wanted.

Now in our 70s we have the slide on camper, definitely only room for 2 but often camp with the kids who caravan and tent totally independently.
Last father's day present from the kids was a pork spit roast and veges served round the camp fire in the Central Highlands.
We were rather chuffed with that.
Life is a journey, make the most of it.
Cheers

Well I'll  put my hand up like a lot of others, various tents & then a rear fold hard floor camper trailer.

We also bit the bullet after being over set up times & got a Jayco OB 15.48, love the fact that beer o'clock is now much quicker. Went to Fraser & had a great time.

Yeah, why not. But, I love travelling along and getting to places faster and being able to do a u-ie with my camper compared to caravaners.

That said, thinking about buying an old van, but also thinking about buying just a swag.

Yep, hearing ya. I kmow I'm not going to get my asking price, but I have to start somewhere.

With a bad back and couldn't be fkd with poles and ropes these days, the van is much more attractive now.
agree 100000%

'Upgraded' yes lol - missus got sick of packing/unpacking the soft floor and it really wasn't feasible for a quick overnighter somewhere. Plus getting older and the thought of climbing over each other to go out for a loo break is no longer really that enticing. Not being flush with funds, scored an old van for $200 (highway robbery but I wasn't going to argue with their price!) have spent a couple of grand getting it ready for us (new bedroom, wiring, electric brakes on new axle etc.) and now to use it. Much easier for an overnighter - 10 mins max to set up including toilet tent.

I think one of the big changes is the new(?) turbo diesels that can pull bigger vans and still be reasonably comfortable and economical.  This has changed what a lot of grey nomads are willing to pull hence the increase in size of vans.

To me the big divide is really whether you want to be able to go off road and over the corrugated dirt roads that make up much of northern Australia.  Hybrids came about because enough people with money insisted on toughness ease and comfort.

The US is an interesting market where what they call average size is huge, and everything comes with aircon, showers and toilets.  Then there are teardrops (some that come with aircon)

We will probably see our caravans increasing in size as our tow vehicles get bigger.

We used to use a soft floor camper trailer, and even used it for overnight stays on multi week trips. Wasn't too bad to setup, used to take the mrs 15mins to set it all up, for an over nighter, by herself. Took a bit longer to pack the next morning though, probably 20 to 30 mins. But we eventually decided to get a smaller pop top van, for simple ease of use for short stops, apparently LOL.

I do miss being able to take the camper along some goat track behind the Troopy. No way you can do that with a van.

To me the ability to go outback is essential, its the only way to go some places and lets us get away from crowds.  I can't see that changing, so if the Tvan gets to difficult to use I'll be getting a hybrid.

We upgraded from a Camp-O-Matic rear fold to an off-road poptop hybrid (slide out kitchen). This was done a bit sooner than we were expecting to, but we had an opportunity that wasn't going to come again.
I still go to bike rallies and camp in a small single person tent, with a jetboil for a stove and dehydrated packs of food, etc. Went to the Thunder rally, for the first time, a couple of months ago, and am scheduled to go to the Karuah River rally at Dungog, NSW. Another favourite is the Ruptured Budgie rally at Mingoola NSW. Been to lots of these over the years, and still enjoy the ride and the camping.

Cheers, Bruce

Going the other way.  I think, no we are...
We are putting our Bushtracker on the market.  :'(  Bought it new end of 2015 and planned to have it for 3 years and the sad time has come. Did what we wanted and still have our AOR camper.  See how we go in the camper but have other things planned for this year. But our Bushtracker is well hell of a good van....   Kevin
