Pat Callinan's 4x4 Ad show
« on: March 01, 2014, 02:05:41 PM »
Bit of a rainy day so I thought I would sit down and watch Pat's show.

It was a repeat and hadn't seen it before.  Have previously enjoyed the shows but all it was was ads.  Not just for Mr 4x4 but all his sponsors.  Maybe 10 minutes of Adventure and the rest was just crap not worth watching.
Cheers

Overall I like the guy and his show, he is not over the top with what he does or his mods. But your right the show has become infested with Adds. If that's what he has to do to pay for his show well the ratings will judge it. I tuned out a little while ago when I had just sat through a 30 sec Yamaha Gen ad staring Pat and we return to the show to get him do a product endorsement on the Yamaha generator! Now if it's watched its time shifted and I don't watch any of his ads.

Was interesting a pole on 4x4 earth (think) about which show you preferred and "all for adventure" was leading by a fair margin and that's a show that has very little product placement.
Here for a good time, not a long time!

Jim

Pat used to edit 4wd monthly magazine before going out on his own few years ago. so fairly able to earn his own title, lots of the 4wd action/monthly dvds with him and roothy getting round some great tracks etc. H e had a sale on the 4wd monthly website a while ago and i nabed his rain coat thing for bugger all and a brand new shirt and hat.

You need to watch some Russell Coight vids on YouTube and then watch some Pat C. They are amazingly similar except Pats show isn't funny or that entertaining.

While I understand the need for sponsorship I too believe there are way too many ads in all forms of modern media. In the good old days magazines seemed to be a reasonable source of unbiased(ish) information. Currently most product reviews seem to be more cash for comment.

I sometimes think there should be a few name changes, for example:

4wd Adtion and 4x4 Adstralia

BTW, I think all reviews should state the financial interests of the reviewer, something along the lines of what Choice do:

"We buy all the products we test – we don’t accept industry freebies and we don’t take ads. We're non-profit and our work is funded by people like you."

Yeah I must have seen that Yamaha Geni add a good ten times in yesterday's show, I much prefer watching all 4 adventure, still some adds but nothing to complain about. You do have to give Pat credit for the responsible 4wding though

I would rather watch a 4wd adventrue show then any of the so called reality shows, much prefer to be doing my own adventuring, but that will come.  It just seems so much of not just his shows but a lot of the adventure shows are showing less of the adventure and more of the ads

I like Pat's show because to me he does the things and goes to places I can one day see myself being able to get to. His patrol seems sensibly modified for touring which is what I'm aiming for and SWMBO enjoys watching them with me. I never get the "ohh my god that's stupid" comments when we catch one of his episodes.

While I also love watching the 4wd action DVD's and all 4 adventure I know I'll never be able to have a truck capable of the punishment they get put through or the time available to get to these magical places.

But you are right, there's way to much product pushing

I walk away from his shows subconsciously chanting COOPERS - COOPERS - COOPERS - COOPERS

At least thats better than the 4wd action ones - IDIOT - IDIOT - IDIOT  :D

I like pat but I get bored with the constant flogging of products that might not even be the best on the market, they only get flogged because it is from a sponsor....

I have to laugh at the majority of these 4WD shows as this season brand ABC fridges, suspension, Tyres etc are the best and this is what we must have, but next season the sponsors change and brand XYZ are suddenly the best.
