Great Ocean Road Trip

Hi All
We are new to MySwag. My family & I ( 2 adults & 2 kids)have recently purchased our first camper trailer (market direct camper) & are looking at doing a road trip in January from the northern tablelands to the Great Ocean Road over approx 2-3 weeks. Just wondering if you could give us any advice, tips or hints about the trip. Any advice on where to stay, must see/do & what is needed would be appreciated. Thanks again  :D

Hi,

If you want to stay on the coast I would be booking ASAP .This region gets extremely busy at this time of year. Check out the Otway National Parks as well .Not far from the GOR and well worth the visit.

We stayed at Nelson (which could be at the end of your journey) and did the Nelson River Cruise to the Princess Margaret Rose Caves and was brilliant on all accounts!

How many days do you plan to be on the Great Ocean Road?  We did it last year as part of our trip back from Adelaide to Sydney after Chrismas and spent two days on the Great Ocean Road, starting from a roadside camp just out of Nelson, then the next night at Lavers Hill behind the pub (tried Johanna but the site was full), then at the end of the second day we went across the ferry from Queenscliff to Sorrento and ended up camping at the Sale showgrounds.  That included stops at all the main tourist sites.

To Myswag.
Here is part of our trip report that took in the Great Ocean Rd on the way home from last years National Meet at Wilmington. Adelaide, Warrnambool, Great Ocean rd
Wish we had longer to visit more places along the way, Hope this is of some help to you guys.

Welcome to MySwag , Please tell us where you are coming from to best help you plan or at least advise the best bits .  When you get a bit closer l can advise really top not to be missed spots along the GOR  :cheers:

The Otways, Lorne is great, Take a drive through some forest tracks to the waterfall and walks, basicly the signs point you to anything worthwhile!

Drive safely and take your time. There are plenty of passing bays if traffic banks up behind you. Plenty of wildlife around the back tracks also.

When you do the GOR do, do it slowly stop at every pulloff bay to drink in the beauty . then do the retuun trip so you can see what you missed on the way down  :cheers:

We're planning to do the GOR in Nov, so I'll also benefit from the knowledge of those who've gone before  8)
Mind you, this will be our 3rd attempt to go *lol*  Told the minister, come hell or high water or apostles falling over...we're going!

G'day guys, to Myswag and congrats on the purchase of your camper!
There's so much see and do on the GOR. The views are amazing (just remember to keep one eye on the road!!)
If you're starting from the eastern end (Torquay), drop into Bells Beach, then you've got Aireys Inlet (check out the lighthouse), Fairhaven (keep an eye out for the "house on the pole"), Lorne (if you're hanging for a chai latte and need to stock up on incense ) After Lorne its just magic view after magic view. As Speewa said, stop at every lookout and viewing area, you will not get tired of it i promise. Camping at places like Wye River and Skenes Creek is wonderful, but very popular.
After you hit Apollo Bay (the kids will love the beach there), the landscape changes as you head inland a bit and climb up and through the Otway Ranges. Beautiful rainforests that you really should try and spend a few days exploring.
Coming out of the Otways, you hit the coast again. This is where you will find the famous 12 Apostles, Loch Ard Gorge and Gibsons Steps. The coast here is completely different to the other side of the Otways.
 Port Campbell is a hidden gem....literally. Its on a small bay carved into the cliffs, a beautiful spot. Check out how boats are launched here via a crane on the dock!
On towards Peterborough is The Arch, London Bridge and The Grotto. Make sure you stop at all of these, but be aware that you wont have the places to yourselves!!!!
The last stop before you head inland again is the Bay of Islands. This area is spectacular, and you absolutely must check out the boat ramp just west of Peterborough. It is signposted, keep an eye out for it, you will not believe it!!
If you've got time, head to Warrnambool and Port Fairy, or even Portland. Although not strictly part of the GOR, this part of the Shipwreck Coast is spectacular.
So there's the GOR in a nutshell. We've travelled it many times and never get sick of it. As others have said, take your time and take it all in!
If you are planning to travel in January, I would take the advice of riderx and book spots ASAP. This part of the coast is extremely busy that time of year, esp school holidays.
Enjoy your trip guys, you'll love it. Just don't forget to post up a trip report ;D ;D

Bush camping will be stuffed to the doors that time of year.

You can stay at somewhere like Cape Otway Caravan Park, its full of koalas, as is the whole area around it.

You can do so much around that region it aint funny.. You can do the great ocean road in a day stopping at the major sites.... its not as long as people think...
