Looking to get a satnav for the missus. Just for general suburb running around. Used to have a Garmin Nuvi 600 which was great but over 10 years old now and a bit slow.
Just need something that is simple and intuitive to use, no need for speed camera locations etc etc. my missus is allergic to technology so it has to be simple and just work.
Just after a cheapy, see lots of Navman ones for $150ish. Any reason not to get one? Any other options of similar price?

i've just gone through this for myself...
ended up buying a second-hand samsung galaxy s5 and installed HERE maps...
works a treat... (i also side loaded the latest version of android...)
my advice is to buy a cheap, but solid brand android phone (nokia comes to mind) and install HERE maps...
the HERE maps can be downloaded to the phone, so they don't need internet access to work... free, as well... :)

Think harvey norman or jb hifi got one for $99. I've had one and since passed it on to my niece. No problem with it. Worked like it said on the box. It even showed alot of bush tracks.

Any reason your not considering Google maps on her phone?

Always used NavFree.
Navfree is a completely free, voice guided navigation app, with no hidden costs or charges.
Can use on tablet or phone, android or apple.

Beachman, Google maps shows the tracks through my property and the 100 acres behind us as roads. In the last 12 months I have had to recover 6 muppets who followed Gmaps instead of common sense.

Waze on my phone

If you dont want to use a phone, i think you will find most of the main brands such as Navman, Garmin are pretty similar if you are not after the bells and whistles. I’d be going on pricd and how long they provide free map updates, if at all.

I bought a TomTom when Dick Smith was closing down. Not a good buy. About six months later TomTom advised the maps can't be updated as it was 3G. So they offered a deal to buy another one at 50% off. The swivel at the back came loose and the unit flops around like a donkeys appendage on a rough road. POS - gone in the bin.

Only looking for dedicated units, not phone apps. She currently uses google maps on the phone, she wants a dedicated gps as she is paranoid about the mobile phone fine while driving!!! Also the volume isn’t that loud, can’t stream it through the stereo when listening to the radio. My old Garmin was very loud.

Hi,
Try contacting gpsoz, or johnnyappleseed, they may be able to update your old Garmin if you can't do it yourself.
Cheers

Google uses data and is pretty average when reception gets sketchy.
I found IGO Nextgen and the latest aus map which i have loaded numerous devices, Samsung note3, Nexus 7 tablet, my Oukitel phone and on my recently installed Eonon 7" android head unit.

Plus, a phone call comes in and you stop getting navigation instructions.
Not very handy if you are in a critical location and need to know where to turn next.

Go through Product Reviews website.
I bought a Navman for #1 son, and got home and nearly had a stroke at the reviews - it was not pretty and they were all recent (nto sure of model now was 12mths ago).. IT was one of the lower priced models.
Took it back to Goodguys and swapped it for Tom Tom after reading product reviews on that particular model. Its worked fine, and the wireless updates of maps has worked fine so far.
I dont think it matters what make you get - but take her in and let her look at teh screens to see what works for her. They are all slightly different as are the menu's...

OP not interested in google but For the information of others you can use google maps without a mobile connection.
Needs a bit of planning to download maps but not that hard.

Waze as a phone app via apple car play/android auto to the head unit is about as good as it gets, live traffic and re-routing around accidents and congestion, just works nicely

I assume it also needs a data connection ?

I made the mistake to buy the VMS from 4wd Supercentre.
Was brilliant while it worked. It is currently in a bin somewhere in Camp Hill.

Another reason she wants a stand alone unit is sometimes the kids play with the phone music etc. car isn’t new enough to have apple car play etc etc!!! Also she wants it mounted in the car, not having to get her phone out all the time and attach it to a mount.
So stay away from the cheap Navman ones and VMS, sounds like a good plan. Might stick to Garmin...

Some tosser gets on one of the Shittier TV channels occasionally, and spruikes on for about an hour about some Garmin thing .... must be good ;D ;D

I just had a quick look at the Garmins, very familiar to the old one I have. And free lifetime updates (haven’t checked what they decided a lifetime is haha). Bird, that Navman one looks Shitehouse haha, poor cam probably thinks you hate him

thus why i returned it :D

If she is not tech savvy get another Garmin as that is what she is used to.
Had Garmin before and lifetime maps never ended, until the GPS did.

I reckon they would all have fine print on what 'lifetime' actually means.

I'm pretty sure they aren't referring to the owner's lifetime. ;D
It just means you can keep updating the maps indefinitely until the unit dies, which at some point it will.

Garmin lifetime maps is based on the market lifetime of the unit, ie when a Garmin GPS is replaced with a new model, that is the lifetime. This means you can buy a new Garmin GPS at Johnny Appleseed, take it home and register it, pay your $198 lifetime maps subscription, and the next day have a new model released superceding your purchase. At that point your lifetime maps end. This happened to me with a BMW navigator III (Garmin streetpilot 2820 from memory) although it was about 6 months, not the next day. :'(
Map updates are only as accurate as the local roads authorities are. New 2019 Garmin maps still has a 70kph radar warning at Blacksoil from when they were building the new interchange about 10 years ago.
Cheers.

Map updates are only as accurate as the local roads authorities are.
One option there is to use one of the maps that runs on OpenStreetMap - MapsMe or OSMAND.
Then you can go in & edit the map yourself to correct street names, numbers, speed limits, lanes, traffic lights etc etc etc ;D
