Canned food and this hot weather
« on: January 02, 2019, 06:16:35 PM »
Hi myswaggers

I hope you all had a very Merry Christmas and that 2019 is a great year for you!

I've just come home early from a trip to the goldfields, because the daytime temperatures got over 40C....and it wasn't pleasant at all. In fact, the fridge/freezer was running non-stop during the day and I cooked one of my deep cycle batteries.....more on that in the Electrical thread. And the flies....don't get me started on the flies, ok!!!

The tinned food and other perishables like cakes, biscuits, vegies, etc. that I take with me, are stored in lidded plastic boxes and when I set up the camper trailer, I take the boxes out and store them in the tent part of the CT.

The daytime temperatures were oppressively hot and I'm wondering about the tinned food I took away with me....will it still be ok to keep for my next trip?

The perishables likes cakes, biscuits, etc. are on the 'not sure whether to keep or get rid of' list, so I'd be interested to hear from anyone who can offer any advice, thanks.

regards
Rusty...

Tinned food is typically heated to over 100 after canning (at least tinned fruit is) that's how it's sterilized.  As long as the can is intact it should be fine.

If you ever see a can that has started to bulge get rid of it!!

Or when you open the can the interior is very discoloured and contents are a bit whiffy .

Thanks for your comments. I was ok with the tinned stuff but Mrs Gates was a bit concerned....maybe she cares about me after all  ;D

Hi Kangaron
Sadly, no colour.....I did pick up the usual bits of wire, a rusty tin and lid, half a horse shoe nail and some bullets and shells.

I went armed with a new Nugget Finder 19" Evolution coil and a steel phase SP01 audio enhancer but I'll have to wait for my next trip to christen them.
