Gibb River road with dogs
« on: May 16, 2012, 10:59:45 PM »
Hi another new member - thanks for the site
My question is has anyone information/experienced travelling the Gibb River road with dogs.
I live remote and have heard that the road can become busy so it will be a touch of suburbia for my dogs
? are the camp spots big enough so I do not disturb other peoples holiday.
Any info will be a great help
Thanks

first off, read the various signs advising about the laying of 1080 poison baits used for killing of feral animals

If your dog is off it's lead and smells the buried bait, it will dig it up and will eat it
your dog will die a horrific, painful death in front of you and everyone with you

I assure you it is not a pretty sight or SOUND either >:D

Thanks for that insight as I live remote and have grown up with 1080 use it is always a concern wherever we travel.

Have  read here. They are not allowed in most parks which is where your going to want to go.

Thanks steveandviv
Great site.
I'm waiting to get more info from another person in Broome who has lived on the stations along the Gibb as to where the best campsites would be for myself, dogs and other campers.
My dogs are are camp dogs and if you are from Broome I'm sure you know what the term stands for in the type of breed they are. We have traveled far together. This trip involves going back to Ngukurr NT but I am wanting to head down the Gibb on the way back (from my trip) which is unfamiliar to me even tho I have been to Tunnel Creek and Winjana (without the dogs) many times when living at Fitzroy Xng.

Thanks again for taking the time to reply
Cheers! savio

I've taken my cattle dog with us everywhere his entire life (RIP Digger  :'( ).

When we did the Gibb many, many moons ago, the nice NP's man at Tunnel Creek and surrounds even let us take him with us where ever we went as long as he was confined to the campsite or tied to the car when we went somewhere of interest.   He even wrote me a permission letter to do so if we were questioned.

I doubt you could do this now though.

We had no problems at any other points along the way.

Thanks Kit-e cat 9 that's the news I was after. My dogs are 1 Ngukurr part dingo 2 a Fitzroy Xing flyer that travel with me all the time but because they are remote dogs I need to consider other people as we always camp remote. Ngukurr area is fine as I have traveled around that area a lot and I will have my own TO with me but Gibb I have yet to travel and due to respect of the area and people I cant just pull up at any place. Thanks for the info
Cheers! Savio

Just keep in mind this was 1998, not overly busy and we are bush campers so we didn't camp at any of the (now) attractions.

You can definitely visit parts of the Gibb with a dog, but for me most of the good attractions were in the National Parks, so you'll obviously be limited in where you can go.
We met some travellers in Broome who left their dog in a "pet motel" while they went on a whirlwind tour of the Gibb.
Not really sure that is a good option (I wouldn't want to leave my dog in a kennel). They referred me to this website for info on travelling with pets
