Hey Everyone!

Hey All,

I've recently purchased a 2017 LSU Isuzu Dmax.

Currently in two minds of if I kit out my rig with self sufficient canopy and roof top tent.

OR

Get myself a camper trailer. So here I am to learn all about products, costs, pro's cons etc.

Anyway, looking forward to contributing. (where i can :) ....)

Cheers,

Welcome on-board.

We purchased a BT-50 without a canopy and decided to fit it out for camping by installing draws in the tub.
Killed the ute as a ute as we couldn't fit anything in it. Even tip runs became problematic as we didn't want to get rubbish all over the draws, Couldn't fit the bins in the back either.
Was useless for camping as it didn't have the canopy.

My advice would be to carefully think why you bought the ute, and will kitting the ute out reduce it's usefulness in other parts of it's life.

We've got a canopy now that I haven't actually used yet. It's a jack off system and takes less than 5 minutes to unplug the 3 wired connections, jack off the back of the ute and drive away.

We bought it to compliment the camper trailer, not replace it. My original plan was to just get an empty canopy but a deal came up that I couldn't refuse. This one has a water tank, kitchen setup, designated area for the fridge and a rooftop tent. I'll use it a couple of times a year when I go out camping with mates but when I go out with the family we'll take the Trackie.

There's a Facebook group called 4wd canopies Australia, great group for inspiration.

How many of you are there?
what sort of travel/camping?

if your solo, just stick with the Ute.

Welcome aboard and with camping/4WDing it’s all a compromise.

My past 4WD was a dual cab ute and I did put a fiberglass canopy which for our circumstances worked a treat. The canopy doubled the usable storage area along with making it waterproof and secure. Plus enough room for all the kids push bikes/dump runs etc.

My personal opinion is draws are fantastic in wagons, but unless your camping every weekend not so useful in a ute.

Camper trailers can be fantastic but also extra weight/fuel towing it. Plus it makes accessing some places that little bit harder.  But the upside is the comfort and room it provides especially in average weather.

Roof top tents also fantastic as makes for a quick set up, but means if your camped at one spot for a couple of days and you want to drive your car, means it has to be packed up each time.

I’m sure there are varying opinions on this forum, but only you can work out which option suits your needs.

wha he said....depends on how many of you there are really.
There’s positives and minuses for each if a family is involved, if it’s just the one or 2 of you then that changes the scenario IMO.
