Queanbeyan Flooding

Travelling through Queanbeyan is not recommended at the moment due to flooding of the town and most roads around the area.  The dam is flowing over the spillway after being almost empty for 10 years and the rain isnt showing signs of stopping.  Its the worst flooding in this area since 1976 and it may get worse.  Evacuation centres have been set up.  We will have to wait and see what the next few days bring.  The trees in the distance of Pic 3 are where the caravan park is, or used to be and there are pics of Riverside shopping plaza and the Leagues Club for anyone who knows the area..

Riverside residents have been told to collect their valuables and evacuate their homes as the New South Wales city of Queanbeyan, south-east of Canberra, braces for its biggest flooding in decades.

More than 100 millimetres of rain fell in parts of the capital region overnight and the Queanbeyan River is expected to peak between 8 and 9 metres this morning.

New South Wales SES spokesman Tony Casey says the flood is likely to be equal to or greater than the 1974 and 1976 flood levels."

Cripes...Ive just had some friends move to Quenbeyan only three weeks ago with hope to start a new and better life over east...Not a good start.

We were meant to be in the Carvan Park next to river tonite had the Expanda booked in at Jayco up the road

The van park never rang to tell us not to come    guess they had other things on their mined at the time and their phone/computer doesn't work to well underwater , I managed to get hold of them after midday to cancel.

I managed to get another park in Canberra but decided it was just going to Sh!tty down there and moment.
rebooked with Jayco for mid January.

Couldn't believe all the pics when I got on the internet. Unbelievable. I grew up in Queanbeyan and I can't remember seeing it ever that bad. I do remember some floods but this one was a dozzy. Poor old Queanbeyan, gets a rough trot sometimes being next door to the Capital. Some girls from work were evacuated and lots off in other areas from flooding in the Tuggeranong area. Just amazing. Photos I've seen of Scrivener Dam are mind boggling. There was talk yesterday of the zoo needing to be evacuated. Course this brought on some lively conversation as to what animals we would take home to our houses. Thought the giraffe having a ride home in the car was a good one. Amazing how quickly the water recedes with comparison photos today.

Yep, It's pretty wet down here at the moment.
I've just come out of the bush behind Tharwa (about 35km SW of Canberra) where we were doing an Outward bound course - we had 97mm of rain at our campsite on Wednesday night - wetter than I've ever been. Might have been ok in the CT but not so good on ground sheets under plastic sheeting...

Still, we were ok in the morning - thinking of those who have lost so much over the past week or so in the floods..
