make sure you do a search on the interwebs for the item you are keen to buy, before you go - some of them are available brand new at lower prices elsewhere.

Thanks chaps for the heads up.   Sounds like you really need to go there beforehand which I haven't got time to do.  Might just go along as a spectator....

Okay. Couldn't resist having a sticky. Didn't partake in the 400m sprint from the main gate. It was more of a light jog....  ended up with an alleged new minus remote warn 9.5xp winch. Supposedly down from $2247 to $1000.  Post purchase research seems to indicate that they are an ok winch if maintained but way overpriced.  So pretty happy with the result.

I have a 9.5xp, it's on it's 2nd vehicle and has done some hard work. Nice pickup for $1000. Take it to Mal Leslie for a 'tune' up and you won't have a problem with it.

Thanks d4d. I copied down his details from when you posted them on the prado forum. Sounds like he knows his stuff. Does he do installs?

Yup but he charges big $ for the privilege. It's not that hard just needs to be planned and have the right tools.

Fair enough.  I've got some rattles and squeaks in the sahara bar I have to get sorted under warranty first.  I gather you are suggesting I get it serviced even though it's new.

Yep, Mal replaces the hollow braces with solid bar, epoxies the motor and generally water proofs and strengthens it.

Given you don't have a hand controller, I'd suggest not fitting the solenoid box, instead fit an Albright contactor with an in-cab switch.

Nope I have one also, just means you need to get a little more creative with the install.

Ok I'm feeling a little dim witted atm but don't you just plug it into the housing. How does that involve creativity?  Thanks for your help and patience btw.

You could do that, I cut the plug off and hard wired it in.

As above Get his offset tie rods essential IMO.   There a great fast winch but if you spool on with paying attention to line wrap. At best you bend the tierods at worst you break the winch housing.

Also it's essential you relocate the drain in the motor if your not getting Mal to seal up the winch.

I've read all the horror stories about the drain not being changed.  I guess the decision to be made is do I want it 'sealed' to reduce maintenance or left unsealed for ease of maintenance.  I'll have a chat to Mal about it I guess. Anyone got any installation instructions? Can't seem to find any on the web.

I will see if I can find the ones that came with mine. They are not difficult to fit, an extra set of hands help when getting it in place if not I hang mine with a strap of the top tube of the bullbar and hoist it into position.

If you need a hand let me know

Mal is your man, mine has had the magic touch and he really knows his stuff

That would be great GG.  I'll call or drop into his workshop Monday on the way to work. Installation help would be great.  I'm sure I have the ability but sometimes lack the bravado.... I'll let you know.

Don't be concerned about the 1950 time warp when you walk into Mal's workshop :)

I visited Mal today with the winch.   Great looking workshop.  Exactly the sort of workshop a thinking, old school engineer would have I reckon.  Pretty happy with what he said about the winch and very happy with the service.   It is the superseeded model with the brazilian bosch motor as opposed to the not so good newer chinese motor.   It is new enough to have rubber seals etc that the earlier models do not have.

He is doing all the things D4D and Achjimmy suggested so I'm pretty happy.  Although he did suggest that I really need to do something to the front suspension to cope with the weight once the winch is fitted....

Thanks again guys for your help
