New Camel owners from Warwick
« on: May 10, 2011, 04:56:14 PM »
Have been a lurker for the past few months, learned a lot, and decided I should introduce ourselves. We are a young family of 5 from Warwick who have recently joined the growing army of camper trailer owners. Our weapon of choice was a Camel Discovery Plus - plenty of room for the family to relax in comfort.

We had our first big trip out over Easter with a 5hr hike to Woolgoolga to break it in - and a ball was had by all. Downside was that 2am the morning that we were to pack up the heavens opened up and didn't really stop till we were back across the border. Was interesting to pack it all up in the rain, but all things considered we managed quite nicely.

G'day & Welcome.

I used to live in Warwick, and also at Acacia Creek. An old mate of mine is still in Warwick and a member on here, so you won't need to go camping on your own.

Hi and welcome to My Swag.
Packing up in the rain is not a lot of fun but will probably become a good camp fire story later on.

Thanks for the warm welcome. Yes - another Camel! The in-laws bought a discovery about 7 years ago, and only got rid of it cause they wanted to get into the caravan scene - a decision that they regret - it was a great unit. We have been keen campers in the past few years - with a few good trips, and a few very wet trips in a tent - which brought forward the plans for a camper trailer. The in-laws were also interested in getting another camper for a few planned trips where their caravan wouldn't really get them, so the decision was made to share the purchase of a camper. While we have the desire, we don't really have the tug at this stage to access more offroad areas (Territory), but with the thoughts of the in-laws taking it where they wanted, and the fact that out next tug would likely be the in-law's Pajero, the decision to future-proof the purchase as much as possible was made.

The Camel is a standard Discovery Plus, with the delux kitchen, upgraded wheels to match those on the Pajero, basic electrics, and minus the front box. We have since had a new box manufactured as seen in the pics below. In the top against the trailer wall is a tray that the poles sit nicely into, and there is plenty of room to fit the WebberQ, along with all the other odds and ends.

Planned future mods include a slide out draw that fills the passenger side half of the trailer for storage, addition of jerry can holders / another gas cylinder in front of the box, new ALKO offroad coupling and handbrake, toolbox that covers most of the driver's side of the trailer, removing the jerry can holder on the passenger side and fitting an electrical box in it's place.

Electrical fitout will include all the normal stuff - battery charger, inverter, sockets around the trailer etc. If you have a look in the electrical section of the forums, I have a bit of a writeup on the RGB LED lights we put in.

Some pics as requested!
First up - some of our setup at Woolgoolga
