Title: Greetings from Africa
Post by: Oryx on September 27, 2011, 05:49:56 PM
Hi All

I am a new member residing in Walvis Bay, Namibia on the west coast of Africa.  I am married to Annelize and we have two sons, Ruben-Anton (4 years old) and Reghardt (22 months old).  I drive a 2000 Prado 3.0 Diesel GX which we use for camping, fishing & off-road trips.  Annelize drives a 2005 VW Touareg 4.2 V8 which we use for long distance trips on tar and good gravel roads.  Our CT is a 2000 Jurgens Oryx.  The Prado is also used for towing our CT.

I am looking forward to sharing my passion for camping with you folks from down under.  I am also eager to see how things are being done down under and to learn from your experiences.

Herewith a couple of pics to give substance to my introduction:

Thank you for making me feel welcome.  It is not a Conquerer camper.  It is part of the Jurgens range, look here (http://www.jurgenssafari.co.za/models/oryx.html) for more detail.

Dit gaan baie goed dankie.  Nice to find someone who can speak & understand THE LANGUAGE  ;D.  Following the RWC with keen interest, it looks as though South Africa will be playing Aus in the quarter finals.  I am actually quite surprised to see that so few people have mentioned anything about the RWC on the forum.

Hi Oryx, just looked up walvis bay on google earth, looks like you have plenty of sand to drive in. reminds me of the west coast of oz, desert meets the sea.  I like the look of your CT it's something different from what we have here, but it looks the goods ;D

Yip, Walvis Bay is right on the edge of the Namib desert (the oldest desert in the world) and the only thing separating the desert from the sea is the road along the coast line.  I've been staying here for the last 4 years but I still find it very fascinating to have desert on one side of the road and sea on the other side.
The CT's built in South Africa is quite different from the ones you have in Aus, that was the very first thing that I noted when I joined the forum.  Most evident is the substantial longer draw bars on the Aus CT's and also the fact that your CT's is significantly "flatter" than ours.

Make sure that you visit Namibia when you ever get the opportunity, you will not be sorry.  It is magnificent country and a true paradise for any outdoor enthusiast.  We also supported Namibia of all our heart in the current World Cup, although they didn't win any of their matches they stood themselves pride, specially if you take into consideration that rugby in Namibia is still a true amateur sport.  Our team also gained quite a big following in New Zealand because of their attitude and their spirit with which they compete.

I'm still waiting for the lion to join me in my CT.  I did however manage to stumble upon these elephants (in the pics below) very close (about 500m) to our campsite  :o.  These elephants are roaming in an area where there are no fences restricting there movement, when it gets realy dry they often walk into the campsite and rip out the under ground pvc water pipes for a quick drink.  Africa is a though country!!!!!

Troy
There are a couple of Namibians playing club rugby in Europe (the captain, Jacques Burger, plays for Saracens) and a couple play provincial rugby in South Africa.  Most of the guys are however only playing amateur club rugby in Namibia.  This year there wasn't any guys playing for any of the Super 15 teams.

You only need to watch South African rugby to see what our Super 15 teams are doing wrong. As my soccer mad / rugby hating work mate will attest there is rugby on most of the year....

I don't know if I'd cry, scream like a little bitch, or let out a little bit of poo in my pants if I woke up looked out of the tent and saw a herd of Effelants outside the trailer...

Thats awesome!!!
