Title: Thermomix
Post by: phatassphairy on March 10, 2012, 03:16:38 PM
i was just wondering does anybody have one ....and if you take it camping.....and how do you store it so it travels?

We've got one.  Well....my wife TOLD me we are buying one :(  No debate, no win...

But, really, after using it for a while it is brilliant!  We use it for heaps of stuff.

There is NO WAY we would take it camping.  Too much money to have stolen IMO.

Use it to pre prepare a lot of frozen food and then take that away.

We done a trip last year with another couple who had one of these things, pretty much used it every day to do all their cooking. Pretty amazing machine except for one thing......it required the generator to run EVERY night :'(

Fun police ....they are brilliant little numbers and ....happy wife, happy life.... is an awesome motto.   :cup:

Moto Mech .... i hate that !!!! we went camping at the Fletcher (outside of charters towers) and a pair of old geezers run a generator to fill their pop top with air-con at night. i swear it sent my PMT through the roof ..and i guess it was a blessing that they were on the other side of the creek cause i reckon i was reaching a hormonal peak  >:D >:D >:D.

Nomad .... there is a spin off you know ...you get to eat like a king and it cleans out the kitchen cupboards of so many appliances, cause you only need the one. (oh and they make perfect alcoholic fruit slushies).....and my theory is "how much did those mags cost? or what about the winch, or that evacool, or a 2in lift kit with those 33 in muddies accompanied by those "oh so necessary diff locks" lets add up the average list of boys toys and compare them to the thermo .....(((is my plea case starting to look good yet???)))

Hey Phatass,

I think you are perfectly justified to go and purchase it. Sounds like you'll need a Honda or Yamaha 2kw gennie to go with it also.

Don't worry about telling Barra about buying either, he wont mind................

My wife bought one, I nearly had a heart attack at the price, but I've been eating like a king ever since so I've gotten over it. Wouldnt take it camping though, too expensive to risk it.

Enjoy!

yeah that is what i am afraid of ... i am not really interested in running a gennie cause i reckon it wrecks the whole serenity of camping... so i was wondering if there is some sort of converter that would work ....but i don't want to guinea pig with mine ... i was hoping maybe someone out there had a solution ...... and how i got mine  --   i just mentioned thermo, the price and celibacy all in one sentence, Barty was writing the check and shoving it my hand. win win i reckon (i get the thermo ..and he gets fed like a king)

FUN POLICE ... i for got to say i like the idea about prepping and freezing before camping trip

Now I know for sure that they take you females aside at school sometime and tell you EXACTLY how to manipulate your husbands in the future.  That damned word celibacy comes up every time my wife wants something.....it is simply not fair.  Females do not need to learn that word until they are 65, except of course my grandkids and nieces, they can learn it when they learn to speak.

Big Jules, it's a small world, my Sister in Law sells them in Rockhampton!! She never stops going on about them.  I agree they are great and boy they must make some $$$$ from selling them, so far she has been sent to Dubai and Hawaii for conferences, all at Thermomixes expense.

Big Jules / Jaashjr - Is there any chance you could find out where (and how much) to obtain a replacement clear cover that sits in the top hole to stop food escaping? I failed to notice that the "hole filler" was resting inside the blender and when I turned the machine on, the clear cover ended up somewhat dice up  :'(  The Mrs wasn't impressed, so I would like to track down a replacement.

Any help appreciated!

We've had home made butter chicken from scratch two nights in a row.

Takes 20min and is as good as an Indian restaurant.

As was said earlier, "chef" style meals all the time now.

Thanks Barrabart.  Having seen that contraption, and knowing it took me three days to learn how to use a microwave oven, I have decided that such a contraption will not appear in my house....unless the domestic Prime Minister decides otherwise that is.  I have invested in a Beer Machine, and that is technocratic enough, although the wife is in Broome and does not know about that investment yet.

LOL, it was an accident - I swear! I just didn't see it (as it is clear plastic), however it made a terrible noise as it was getting chewed up by the blender.

I did get the "evil eye" from the Mrs for a while afterwards :-[  At least the Thermomix itself works fine, just the clear lid thingy is a bit worse for wear.

i am gunna make some bickies tomorrow for the kids lunches ...... i might even keep a little of the bickie dough and freeze it and do a test run see how it handles the prep. i might have to do a bit of a "compare notes" with  Kiva, GadgetMan, and Liney on what worked well and had no dramas unfreeze and cooking while out camping

We got one, brought it brand new.......from spain. Saved something like $600 over buying one in Australia.

I wouldnt take one camping  - I'll draw the line at taking the bread maker camping.

In regards to the noise of a gennie....... I reckon a thermomix at full speed would easily drown out the noise of the genset >:D

My mum had the e31? But bought one of thebellini ones as well to try it out for the price. She ended up selling the thermomix as the bellini did everything she wanted for 80% less cost.
The best thing about thermomix is the resale though, i think she ended up getting 1600 for it on ebay.

Glad you saved some $$$ ... we had a sniff on the net .... but i was too chicken to spend that much and i was paranoid i guess that the warranty would be a drama in Australia ....now that i have put it to the test i reckon i wont ever use it cause i think it will be a long time before it needs a Dr trip.

hehehe especially if i got a fruit daiquiri happening ....when i am planning on having an alcoholic slush .... i whip it up chuck it in the fridge so i wont wake the skid lids while barrabart and i are trying to have a moment of peace after they are asleep.

My wife bought a travel cover for ours....yes she is planning on bringing it on our trip around Oz. So I ask her what she will go without so we can fit it in the truck or trailer. Well I thought I had her checkmated right there...but no...seems I will be taking less clothing!

Bloody brilliant bit of kit as long as the chef likes using it. Ours is used 2 - 3 times a day! My wife even goes too Thermomix cooking parties and kids and I get to feast on the experiments.

i have slowly been converting my favourite recipes to "thermo style" ....

my fav dinners are honey mustard chicken, honey soy chicken with noodle and veg stir fry, beef risotto and making my own lamb mince Sheppard's pie.

Im in Townsville, but funnily enough we bought ours through an agent in Port Kennedy WA., though the Townsville lady came round and deliovered it and did the demo.

I put up with the nagging from the wife for 18 months before i finally caved in and coughed up the dough!  i've been converted into a fan, not only does it do everything, i now have to spend less time in the kitchen helping out!

My only complaint, sometimes it can be a little noisy, but that just means i go outside to man land for a bit longer!
Cheers

Hi All,

We have had a Thermomix for a while and although I am too scared to use it (1- I am male so therefore hopeless at reading instructions and 2- I am soooo afraid of hurting it...kind the opposite of happy wife happy life that would be!)  I am amazed by what it can do. Last night we had epically good fried rice and then mango sorbet for desert. All done in under 45 mins - including the eating!!! ;D

So he big question is....can this be taken camping without a Generator? We have 2 x 100amp deep cycles in the camper and a dual battery in the Challenger...we are planning an around Oz trip and are planning to integrate a solar set up.

Thoughts from those in the know?

Hi Matt,

I would be very dubious about running it off an inverter, because I reckon it would chew the guts out of your batteries. I haven't actually looked at the specs but I would GUESS it would draw something in the vicinity of 2000w due to it having a heating element and motor. For a start, that is one BIG inverter. But then convert that into amps at 12v - you're looking at more than 160A!!!! Your batteries aren't going to last long at that rate of discharge, not to mention the size of cable you'd need to supply it with...

We have sill made use off it prepreparing food for trips.

My wife went to a thermomix demonstration on the weekend. She came home raving about it, and told me she is getting one.
Had to pick myself up.off the floor when she told me the price........
"You want to spend how much on a kitchen appliance ??? "
She gave me that look (guys, you know the one), and said "You want to spend how much on the Pajero!"
Touche!

For those that do have a thermomix, are they really that good? Do you use it enough to justify the cost? Do I upgrade the suspension on the Paj instead? >:D ;D ;D

We have one and I purchased it. it gets used every day and on the weekends it gets a good go as I prepare things for the week, this weekends jobs were

Orange juice both mornings
Strawberry sorbet
pizza dough
strawberry daquari for the adults
spicy capsicum dip
pork spare ribs and rice
sausage
rolls

All the other apliances now sit in the cupboard doing nothing, I think it may be time to move them to the shed as they have become just dust collectors. Also at the moment they have intrest free which is the way I purchased mine, just pay off an amount each month and its not as hard on the back pocket

We've just ordered one and should take delivery at the end of the week.
We actually ended up doing the "poor man pays twice" thing and trying a cheap Kogan one first. Handy, fancy but annoying hot spots in the container that burn on and a terrible burnt plastic smell from the electric motor that just never went away. I was hesitant to throw good money after bad on the real thing but, it's true, being at the demo sold it for me. Bread/pizza dough, curries and stews, sorbets, daquiries, all sorts of goodies.

I wouldn't take it camping but I'm sure we'll use it to pre-prepare some meals for on the road.

Cheers!

Suffice to say we have one, it gets used on average 10 times per week. Food is great, and 12 months on its one of the best purchases we've made.

Wouldn't take it camping in a fit.

No pressure, just do it, I think its made life a lot easier, don't forget the cheesecakes with malteesers, chocolate mousse, and all the other great foods you can knock up. Just to keep it in line, I have taken dough made in it camping, and a couple of great dips which we froze and ate while in the Flinders.

Daiquiris are DEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEvine

yesterday .... for my steps sisters fam.. I made a linseed focaccia topped with my secret sauce  ;D (which is sweet chilli sauce made in thermo, a dash of BBq sauce, garlic and fresh basil all blitzed then painted on with pastry brush) topped with onion rings, pumpkin slivers, shredded baby spinach sprinkled with small amount of cheese. we also had fresh mango daiquiris, and fresh pineapple and midori slush .....then later for desert ...caramel and hazelnut baileys cocktails....

this morning made a tropical juice punch for the boxing day breaky. oh with perfect hollandaise sauce to top off the eggs :)

And before you say .... there are no pics .... Barrabart is still at work and we won't actually have our xmas until the 3rd of jan ... so I will be repeating the bread at least and maybe a daiquiri/cocktail or 2 :)

And I agree .... I wouldn't take it camping ... just do the prep before hand and freeze and store.

For those that do have a thermomix, are they really that good? Do you use it enough to justify the cost? Do I upgrade the suspension on the Paj instead? >:D ;D ;D
Cheers
Matt

I did both! Got a 2" lift on the Pajero and got the missus a Thermomix as a surprise Christmas present (brownie points galore). Got to thank the taxman for that this year.

The suspension is awesome, even the missus has noticed that it "drives better". Not sure about the Thermomix yet, haven't even plugged it in but the missus seems to think our lives are about to change haha!!!

The $$$ thing is just the same as the cheap vs expensive camper. They effectively both do the same thing but do it in very different ways.

Oh Nab ... what a man   :cup:  ..... not only will you get some brownie points ... but you will get fed like king .......

My tip for the beginner is ..... if it says speed 3 .... only do speed 3 .... there is a huge difference between each speed .... it is not like a food processor/ blender where you can go speed 2/3/4 if it states speed 3 .... it will mean the different between coleslaw or vegie juice ...lol

Another tip ...... i now make my own mince ...... lasagna/ spag bol/ sheps pie  now taste so blurt if i eat it anywhere else ... just cant do store bought mince ....but watch for small bones in the meat ....i have actually stripped my blades ..... i was absolutely shattered....i almost was sick at that the thought that i had broken thermie ..... so i called the company directly ... and got a replacement set for free .....AWESOME..... even though it was my fault.

and i have also got the Veroma bowl, thermo server and the thermo scrubbing brush (as a package when i bought mine) ...... so if you are looking for add-ons .. i would suggest these as they are great too.

Funniest part about that comment is that technically you can brew beer in it!! But only 2 litres at a time :| Not worth it!

Got the Aldi version just before Christmas.  So far I haven't used it at all. Still trying to find something I want to cook in it.  All the recipes seem to involve gluten or dairy.  Very hard to find clean recipes.

If you have any good recipes for this time of year (no, I don't want to make soup or stew), then post them up.

And btw, the Aldi cookbook and video are very light on!  Maybe a dozen recipes, the first of which seemed to involve little more than opening a couple of cans....

I have never heard of it until now, I am sure the wife hasn't either. Is it something that can only be bought from a Tupperware party type thing, or from a shop?
Perhaps, I may just say nothing about it to, that $ value finishes all the CT Mods, and fixes the rear diff in the troopy, plus some beers for my work.

if after a couple of years she is still using it (using it heaps at the moment), we will probably get a thermomix...

I was lucky enough that Aldi had a recall on their version, so I returned it and got my money back.  After about 8 months, I still struggled to find anything to use it for that wasn't just as easy if not easier and better using conventional appliances (like a knife, saucepan, stick blender etc). And the conventional stuff was easier to wash up.

Hey D4D,

I'll see if I can get my Mrs (Phatassphairy, who started this thread) to post up her egg cooking timer details, basically she has a fail safe timer instruction to cook eggs in the basket thingy, so u can get ur eggs for brekky exactly how u like them, soft boiled, slightly runny yoke, hard boiled etc..... seems to be pretty spot on, and takes out the guess work. They are good bits of gear and yep, the thermo does appear to do everything, we've had ours for a few years now, and it stays out on the kitchen bench top, as it's always getting used. The Mustard Chicken meal is great too, i'll see if she can share that one as well, it might even be in the Thermo Recipe book.... glad u like yours.

Catch ya,

Barrabart.

hello everyone ,,

and i still love my thermo sooooooooo much :)  .... they have bought out a newer model .... but i am not interested in changing a thing.

i have got my honey mustard recipe from a book but i have tweaked it to our tastes ...

Honey Mustard Chicken

chop onion                 --3secs--sp7--scrap down sides
add oil                        -- 100d--2mins--sp1
add tumeric and flour -- 8 sec--sp4
add water                   -- 70d -- 1 min --sp1
add chicken, stock, mustards, honey and vegies --100d --rev --soft --9 mins... i like to stick my Spatula in and give a jiggle at the start ... in the middle .. and at the end of this step.
add cream                  -- 100d --rev --soft -- 22mins

if you like a thicker consistency .. add extra 20g of cornflour ---- 100d --rev --soft -- 3mins.... MC off (the clear measure cup )

i hope you enjoy  that one .

now as for the eggs ..... i make my hollandaise sauce first ... then set it aside in a ceramic jug (but you could use a coffee mug ) with a bit of foil over the top and sides to keep it warm.

Hollandaise Sauce

insert butterfly
add first 4 ingredients....90d--7mins--sp3
add spinach ................90d--2mins--sp2

this recipe can be doubled in size ..... but add 2 mins to the first cook time.

My Eggs

place in basket .... add one layer of eggs .. straight from the fridge .. rinse under tap water

add 500g of water .... set on veroma temp ...speed 1

11 mins --liquid yolk creamy white
12 mins --creamy yolk firm white
13 mins -- softish yolk
14 mins --firm yolk
15 mins -- hard boiled

*NOTES*--i use large or jumbo eggs only ... small eggs might need reduced time .. and maybe the temp of your fridge might make it a little different .... i also peel or crack with only 1 minute delay .. as the eggs continue to cook.... to remove your basket .... use the slit in you spatula to lift basket out ... and sit in the sink as it is hot hot hot!!! ... it doesn't seem to matter if i do one or 4 .. and i have popped a small slice of baking paper between the eggs and added some bacon and poached it at the same time ....

i will get back to you with pics of the honey mustard ....sighs...  :-*  i will just have to make it for dinner when BarraBart  gets home

Has anyone ever asked their "friend" how much they make from a sale if they convince you it's a must have appliance.

This is the amway, or tuppaware of the decade.  I'm well over "friends" telling me that they must do a demo for "me"!

When in Germany last year you can get one off the shelf for $600.  I'm thinking of buying a dozen next time I'm there and "gift" them to my "friends" for a small mark-up!

Oh no.  You don't think you get invited to a Tupperware party for fun?!  Why not just have a plain old party.

read this before you're "friend" asks you over for the next party.

This is where this type of sales tactic really winds me up.  The consultants (your "friends" and family) will make you think they are doing you are real big favour by "helping" you buy a product.  It is hard to find a exactly what each machines brings in for the consultant as that may annoy the "friend" who you sold to.  Yes it is a sales job.

Have a look at some of these posts.  Better still, if you bought a Thermomix through your friend, ask them how much they made out of the sale to you.  Surely if they are a friend they'd refund the commission.

https://www.facebook.com/thermomixinaustralia/posts/680815111960752 (https://www.facebook.com/thermomixinaustralia/posts/680815111960752)

Here's a few quotes from the facebook group.

"To top that off - if you don't sell anything YOU DON'T EVEN GET A PAYCHECK for all your work!!!!!!"

"I've been a consultant for over 2.5 years and there has only been one month with no sales, the other months I often earn more than $2000. I am NOT a salesperson, all I do is demonstrate the Thermomix and give my customers the best customer service that I can. Sales will naturally flow from that I believe."

"I'm a qualified accountant but now solely do Thermomix and I LOVE it. It is financially very rewarding"

"Babysitting costs me about $50 per demo but I'm making much more than that so costs are well and truly covered...in fact making more money than I have for a decade since leaving full-time work, and have been earning $1000+ most months since I first started. Love the financial freedom of my full-time pay from a part-time job. Having relatives who can help with babysitting is great tho, so keep that in mind!"

all part of pyramid selling they are trained to say all this bs to entice people to think they can make squillions so their friends  join and become a consultant, they don't want the truth to be known that they too have been conned. Ask any one in this type of business they all say how well they are doing or say they will be rewarded soon but have to work hard to benefit. A year or so later they say that it took up too much of their time and costing them to much having to buy more products for their display.
Now if you do come across a consultant that are loaded, in which I did when I sold Amway if you get them drunk you will find out that they were well off before they retired and just do this to keep them self busy, but when they are sober they will tell a bs story of how they lived on the streets blah blah blah blah and the business set them up for life - any way I am about to try out my hammer ball skills on this previously used by previous owner Thermomix

It's funny how everyone asks if they can make beer. You actually could if you wanted! But only 2 litres at a time ;)
I use ours ALMOST as much as the wife. Yes,  it's pressure sales/party plan/network marketing/pyramid scheme or whatever else you want to call it. Who cares! If you want the product you'll go to a demo, if not you won't.
Cheers,
Jono.

Love my Thermy,  had it for about 5 years and it hasn't missed a beat.
We use it everyday..  Made the best Butter Chicken in it last week..
We make butter,  cook rice,  steam puddings and veges and anything else you want to stream.. Mashed potato,  sorbet.. Prosciutto wrapped chicken is amazing all while cooking the sauce in the bottom at the same time.
Powerful enough to crush ice,  unlike a blender...
The main difference between the thermo and a cheaper alternative is the reverse function, and the blades.
Using reverse while cooking stops food being mushed up too much, and the food in the cheaper models have a tenancy to get stuck under the blades and burn.
I don't sell them,  but I wish I had commission on the sales that's have occurred due to my raving about it ;-)
My advice would be,  if you bought one second hand,  you should organise a demo,  they will be happy to do that,  other wise go into the thermomix forum for receipes.  They are step by step easy..

hello everyone ,,

and i still love my thermo sooooooooo much :)  .... they have bought out a newer model .... but i am not interested in changing a thing.

i have got my honey mustard recipe from a book but i have tweaked it to our tastes ...

Honey Mustard Chicken
  • 600g of diced chicken thighs (i cut these by hand cause i like the chunkier size... but you can do a pulse but it is more mincey ...you can use breast no problem too)
  • 1 onion
  • 30g cornflour
  • 25g oil
  • 30g smooth mustard (i use australian)
  • 15g of seedy mustard (i use hot)
  • 1 teaspoon of tumeric
  • 1 flat tablespoon of beef stock powder (you can use chicken or vegie ... but the beef is my favourite as i have tried all 3 )
  • 1 cup of frozen corn peas and carrot
  • 50g of honey
  • 100g water
  • 80g thicken cream

chop onion                 --3secs--sp7--scrap down sides
add oil                        -- 100d--2mins--sp1
add tumeric and flour -- 8 sec--sp4
add water                   -- 70d -- 1 min --sp1
add chicken, stock, mustards, honey and vegies --100d --rev --soft --9 mins... i like to stick my Spatula in and give a jiggle at the start ... in the middle .. and at the end of this step.
add cream                  -- 100d --rev --soft -- 22mins

if you like a thicker consistency .. add extra 20g of cornflour ---- 100d --rev --soft -- 3mins....

  • 2 egg yolks
  • 65g butter
  • 15ml of lemon juice
  • salt and pepper(i love cracked black pepper)
  • a hand full of baby spinach

insert butterfly
add first 4 ingredients....90d--7mins--sp3
add spinach ................90d--2mins--sp2

this recipe can be doubled in size ..... but add 2 mins to the first cook time.

My Eggs

place in basket .... add one layer of eggs .. straight from the fridge .. rinse under tap water

add 500g of water .... set on veroma temp ...speed 1

I cooked your honey mustard chicken last night. I didn't have any seemed mustard so I added hot chilli paste. It was fantastic... I couldn't believe how tender the chicken was and how good the sauce tasted,  :cup:

True --- but it was the other half that so desperately needed it. i am sure i can make just about anything these contraptions can do, it may be more time consuming my way but end result will most likely be better. I disapproved from the first time I was dragged to a demo about buying one, as I had no intentions of using it and I knew it will be as it is now. I think it takes the fun out of true cooking.

I have used it once didn't read instructions, winged it and the soup turned out fine hoping it will encourage the missus not to be scared.

Nope. taking the blade assembly to pieces. Actually I'm just trying to free up the spinning as it is really tight. Can only just get it to turn using fingers (while it is out of the bowl).

I'd contact Thermomix, even if it's a decent amount outside of warranty, and mention Australian Consumer Law. I think they might go above and beyond at the moment after just copping a 4.6milion dollar fine for "for making false or misleading representations and misleading the public"
If they don't come to the party I would think the ACCC would say a $2000 kitchen appliance should last a lot more than the 2yr warranty they come with and after just slapping them with a massive fine I think they would more than likely happily inform Thermomix that they need to repair it under the Australian consumer law, even up to 2-3 years out of warranty given the purchase price. I'd probably neglect to tell them that you have pulled it apart though.

Missus uses ours daily, often 2-3 times. Even the 9yo made chocolate fudge in it today while the missus was at work! Nothing like putting all the ingredients for spag bol (pasta/sauce/mince) in at the same time and having it ready in 15mins without touching a thing - no mixing sauce, boiling water etc. Sounds like a wank but when the missus is trying to do a million things for 3 kids in the arvo, that 30mins saved is a lifesaver!!!

and my theory is "how much did those mags cost? or what about the winch, or that evacool, or a 2in lift kit with those 33 in muddies accompanied by those "oh so necessary diff locks" lets add up the average list of boys toys and compare them to the thermo .....(((is my plea case starting to look good yet???)))

Problem is you need both, right? And those diff lockers? I’d pick them over a Thermie! They’ve got me out of trouble, and I can cope with a saucepan and stick mix in the camper for now

Thermomix is always the first “big ticket” item to get put off. We’ve been talking about getting one for years (and do intend to take it camping, but we have secure lockable places to store it), but then I went and bought another TD42 didn’t I? We will get one one day...

If you want to use the heating function the consensus is that you really should be running it off a genny, otherwise it will suck you batteries dry pretty quick smart... if your inverter can even handle it. But the rest of the functions are meant to be quite ok to run.
