Hey Keith,

Hope she has a quick recovery. It would pay to let your local shire ranger know. Give them time, place, etc - It may not go anywhere but if they don't know they can't do anything. Sometimes they'll have other reports to put it with.

Our rangers are pretty good and will follow these types of things up.....we often have the same customers  ;D

Progress report.
Attack has been reported to the local council/ranger
Hayley is going to try and get an article in the local rag with some pics, might jog some memories
Tonight I was able to very carefully give him a good scratch behind his injured ear without hurting him (he can't scratch with a bucket over his head), course he's still on antibiotics and pain killers atm.
cheers guys

I was walking my staffy when she was a pup many years back, anywho a storm was rolling and we started heading home, as we passed a particular house a dog jumped the fence and took a chunk out of my dog, managed to get hold of our local vet which was an after hours call, vet was great and operated on my dog that evening, with a cost of $2k
So I went and spoke to the police about it, their advice was to speak with owner of the offending dog first and if unsatisfied with the outcome come back to the police station and report it as a dangerous dog.

Now given a storm was rolling in at the time I did not believe the offending dog to be dangerous just more agitated by the storm,
I went to see the owner who was in his bikie colours and appeared bigger than Arnold Schwarzenneger himself,Thought to myself ï'm going to get a flogging here"however after explaining what his dog had done to mine he was very appolagetic and went straight to the vet to sort out the bill,
Fortunatly my dog recovered without a problems and is still super friendly towards other dogs

When I used to ride horses around town a lot I would get hassled by dogs.

An old bloke I knew made me a device: a length of 8-gauge fencing wire twisted back along itself so there is a loop at one end. Some tape around the two ends formed the handle and 100mm of heavy fishing line and two large sinkers were attached to the loop end. Once a dog has felt the force of that they'll never bother you again.

I realise that this won't help your situation but it seems like too big a coincidence not to share this photo that showed up on my FB wall yesterday just after I first read this thread:

If people like the owner of the dog that got yours were more educated and less ignorant, at least you'd have known to keep clear of it.

BTW, I am NOT in any way saying "you should have known better" or anything like that, just that some consideration from the other owner might have prevented this.

Cheers!
Jono.

I have two labs, there a pain on the lead but the thing is, other dogs off the lead are just a pain come up and all hell breaks loose,

Our dogs are fine of the lead, but if they go running up to someone it could easily be taken the wrong way, and with other dogs of the lead in the right place they will play all day......
The owners are usually the problem not the dogs

As someone who has experience in training dogs for a variety of purposes, unfortunately a lot of dog owners do not understand that dogs, even domestic dogs, are pack and territorial animals.  They require a strong pack leader to follow.  This does not mean someone who kicks and beats them when they do wrong to gain compliance through fear.  A dog that obeys through fear will eventually turn when the opportunity presents itself.  The internet is full of photos that depict owners attacked by their beloved pet.   Rather someone who will guide and control through leadership in a manner the dog will respect and obey.  A dog who will not return to its owner (pack leader) when called is not under control and does not recognise its owner as a leader.  There are of course exceptions such as when a dog is fixated on a rabbit it startled and has tunnel vision and audio block out.

Unless they are trained appropriately they will react in what they see as a natural manner to other animals, humans included.

While there are some 'rouge' dogs in domestic circles which will not be assisted by training, 97% of issues with domestic dogs are as a direct result of either poor or no training by the owner.  I have seen many dogs which the owner has stated are very well trained, ignore their owner and obey simple commands from me simply because of the inflection in my voice and timing of the commands.  They are usually shocked and claim I'm a dog whisperer.  I can guarantee you I'm not a dog whisperer, simply someone who has studied and understands the dog psyche.

We are required to attend lessons to learn to drive and obtain a licence however are able to walk into a pet store without any instruction and purchase an animal which has the potential to become a killer if not managed correctly.

Well that’s my rant.

terrible to see whats happen to poor Zac. I hope he's up & playing in soon.

I personally don't blame the dog that attacked. As a few have said, it can be a case of untrained dog or untrained owner. A poodle can be trained to be a fighting dog as much as any other breed. I 100% hold the owner responsible. They know if the dog is either aggressive or sociable. I socialise my dogs at a young age to prevent such actions. Some owners provoke their dog to be aggressive thinking its funny and then wonder why their dog acts these ways. And most of all, this unfit owner released a known attacker in what is meant to be a fun & social area for them to be active & socially friendly. Next time it could be a child that this happens to. I hate how an animal can be put down due to its owners actions & I believe the owner need's to be the one who's judged & punished, may be then they will be more responsible owners.

Similar happened to us mate but we were in a leash zone. Our Maltese dog was on a leash and attacked by an unleashed big dog. I saw him coming and just at impact time I impacted the attacker  right under the ribs. The owner went ballistic about me kicking his dog. I told him to lay down so I could kick him instead. Pisses me off. No responsibility or accountability.

Progress report on Zaccy.. He lost about a 1/4 of his right ear so he feels a bit odd atm. Coudn't count the stitches but it looked about 20. He cried with pain and shock for 3 days even though he was on pain killers and sedated . He has to wear a bucket over his head to stop himself scratching at his ear but his ear was catching on the edge of that when he shook his head and damaging the stitches so I ran some pinchweld around it, all good now. He still loves going to the park so he's not traumatized in that respect. Stitches hopefully come out on Thursday, but the bucket may have to stay for a few more days
cheers Keith

Update 18 stitches taken out yesterday  ;D just another $70 for the sedation  :'( as some of them were pretty deeply embeded in the scab cover, Zaccy's a lot happier with them out, but has to have the bucket over his head for a few more days untill the wounds toughen up a bit

Sorry to hear about your dog. Glad it's on the mend. It is far too common. Where we are, there was something like 30+ dog attacks over the Christmas period, mostly on beaches, and mostly between dogs. A couple unfortunately were on kids.

As a large breed dog owner, I personally think local Councils need to really tighten the penalties for irresponsible dog owners. It sh!ts me to tears when I have to go out of my way walking my dogs on leads and under control, due to some irresponsible turd walking with  their wormy, flea infested, pavo spreading fluffy sh!tbox 60' in front of them with the lead over their shoulder, in case the Council drive past.

"Oh Fluffy just wants to say Hi." Yeah, well mine don't. Keep your mutt on a lead.
As usual, it's the responsible dog owner, who cops the crap for the irresponsible dog owner.

Rant over.

Shane.

Give some thought to one of those tyre checkers we use with trucks. The same shape as a baseball bat, about 500mm long and made from aluminium. You won't have to worry about the follow through and connecting yourself with it.
