Wow

Quote
An elderly man walked into a Commonwealth Bank in Sydney and transferred $171,000 to a UK account.

Staff noticed the transaction was unusual, and asked him what the money was for.

Confused, the man said he'd received an email asking for payment for computer parts and repairs.

Men over 50 are the most likely to be victims of scams, according to new data.

Bank staff quickly suspected he was the victim of a scam, and cancelled the transfer.

According to Commonwealth Bank data to be released at the National Elder Abuse Conference in Sydney on Monday, people over 50 are three times more likely than younger generations to be victims of these kinds of scams.

Those over 50 accounted for 76 per cent of victims in reported scams.

Was just cleaning up the inbox on my "if I really must give you an email address, you can have this one that is full of junk and I rarely check it" email.
I generally don't read anything with Apple on it, they have nothing I want and all their emails go straight into the junk folder, but this one caught my eye.

Perhaps because it is "URGENTS"..... ;D

Had a bloke reply to my Harley for sale on Gumtree.  Surprise, surprise...he works on an offshore oil rig in the Timor seas and would organise mates to pick bike up after paypal was used..  I wished him many cancers and a long slow death.
Having lots of friends on farcebook is the same as having lots of money in monopoly...means absolutely nothing!!

I check out Gumtree for vintage stereo gear, so am often searching through the electronics section. What annoys me is the amount of scammers trying to flog off "white van" speakers and home theatre gear. Makes me wonder if they actually suck anyone in these days, but I suppose there is always someone who can't resist a "bargain". Had a bit of fun with one of them yesterday:

Gee that's a really cheap price $300 for a new set of speakers with a MSRP of $2,999? Why are they so cheap?
I'm selling them for my Pop.
Did you tell him he shouldn't buy stuff from seedy characters out the back of a white van?
What do you mean about a white van?
Unscrupulous people that try to sell junk at ridiculously inflated prices, to unsuspecting people, from the back of a white van.
  They aren't junk... they're worth $2,999. I don't sell stuff from a van...
I got bored with it here and hit the message thread delete button. But he wasn't as bad as the bloke trying to sell a piece of junk projector for $1,000, that you can get under various brand names from the likes of Aliexpress, for under $150
4.2L TD Toyota Troopy, (Clarke's Country Camper Trailer, softfloor.) sold it and bought a Avan Ray small poptop caravan. I miss being able to acces the little tracks off into the scrub.

What can you do to prevent this one? Why do they call you first?

Once they have your name and address from your letterbox/stolen mail/social media acoounnt, a little bit of digging to find your mobile number and a quick call to confirm.

Once they know your details, they port your phone number to a new phone that that all of those password reset SMS's go to them instead of you. That lets them potentially change all of your passwords for paypal, net banking, etc.

I won’t answer my mobile or the Home phone if it isn’t a number in the contacts list.
If it is a ligitamate call they will leave a message...

new one to look out for - http://www.news.com.au/technology/consumer-issues/these-people-are-professionals-mobile-porting-a-potential-gold-mine-for-fraudsters/news-story/8ef4c78af21192a9a8c3a30a9b5a935b

The bit I don't get from that article:

"After stealing her number, hackers were able to gain access to her e-mails and from there collect personal details of her contacts and begin hacking their accounts, causing friends to have thousands pilfered from their bank accounts."

OK, you've broken into my phone & got my contact list, with phone numbers & e-mails for my friends - how does that enable you to get into their bank accounts ???
