Hi Peter

We did a lot of research and looked and a heap of different trailers before deciding on the Camel trailers just recently.  Having placed our order and deposit just last week we're still more than satisfied we got the best deal of all we looked at given the features and extras had for the price paid.

We decided on;

- Beachcomber trailer
- 13ft tent and annexe floor upgrade
- Thermal fly
- Extra off-side awning
- Electric brakes
- Extended drawbar to 1800mm (from std 1600)
- Drawbar reinforcing/sliders (same as the Discovery/Bushman)
- Boat rack mountings (for a carry rack in future)
- Automotive dust seals all round
- Kitchen wall with window
- Modified axel, hubs to suit Prado rims
- Spare move to tailgate

We elected to drop the kitchen box and tool box to both keep the costs down and so we could configure our own to better suit or needs.  I suspect I'll be asking them to fit an off road hitch, handbrake, extra gas bottle holder, large swing up jockey, provision for a 2nd water tank (provision for one is std) and a high ton cover upgrade before the build commences.

Though Camel could deliver before Christmas we asked for delivery afterwards.

The staff there are particularly good compared to all the others I spoke with as well.  I didn't give them an easy time of it when going through everything and I pushed them pretty hard.  At no time did they lose focus on what I needed and were very supportive and patient during my 'harrassment'.

I've not had a CT before but I do go to an enormous amount of trouble researching and looking at everything before making a call.  For me it came down to either Camel or Customline for an entry level CT and Camel ended up winning comfortably based on:

(in my opinion only)

- far better tent design
- slightly better finish/craftsmanship on the trailers
- staff/sales approach and support
- willingness to work with me on options and cost
- overall price

There is a price blitz on the Camels here in Brisbane at the moment and the Beachcombers are far far cheaper than their RRP of $8,200.  We took good advantage of this as well as the recent Caravan & Camping Sale deals.

Sure, I don't actually have my Camel yet but am more than happy with the whole experience and confident she'll be a ripper.

Good luck with it all, mate.

Check out Barcode's Camel camper.  Very nice unit although he has added a lot of stuff himself.

The Lifestyle is a nice camper too and Patrol King's is a steal at the price he's asking..!

Peter
We picked up a secondhand Beachcomber a couple of years ago at a great price. I have since done a lot of mods to get it fitted out the way we want it, some with Camel parts some not. We have done about 15000 kms with the trailer and have not had an ounce of trouble. The most recent trip was to The Cape and Gulf in July using the OTL and she never missed a beat. The staff at Camel have always been helpful even if I was asking a question that was not related to sale for them.
At the recent show in Brisbane I spoke to Martin from Camel ( a Director of the Company) and he suggested that I take the trailer down to them for a once over after I told him of our last trip. This was an impromptu offer of aftersales service I did not expect. (remember we did not buy the trailer new from them).
All in all we are very happy with the Camel
Best of luck with your choice

My wife and I brought a Camel Discovery with the following options:

13 ft tent, thermal fly (recommended), full annex with flyscreen mesh, toolbox, fold out step, drop down external door on front left hand side, 240V power (2 outlets), 12v battery with 4 12V outlets and fold down steps.

We have 2 children and love the room of the 13 ft tent together with the flexibility of the awning/mesh/annexe arrangement.  We like the flexibility our setup offers and gave it a good test touring Tasmania for 3 1/2 weeks last year.

What would I change.  Given that most of our camping is in caravan parks I would consider having an additional 2 240V power outlets for a total of 4.

I hope you enjoy your Camel camper trailer as much as we do ours.

Regards
JTC

Congrats, mate.  We're jealous - you'll have your well before us.  We ordered ours a week or so ago but with a late delivery request.  I'm hoping to bring this forward now, just waiting to organise a few Prado wheels and finalise some funds.  I have a feeling I'll run out of time and miss out getting it before Christmas, but fingers crossed.

What upgrades did you go with and what's on you list for mods?
