VEHICLE RECOVERY MUST HAVES

Ok the only must haves besides fuel water food etc which are all dependant on each persons numbers and car type are the following.


1. REAR RECOVERY POINT ( If not towing a tow ball replacement hitch with 4.5-4.75T d-shackle is fine and simple and easy.see pics below make sure to trail fit at home some have too much galvanising and need a quick file down to fit))

IF TOWING YOUR TRAILER MUST HAVE A REAR POINT

2. Front recovery points on 4x4.

3. 2 x 9 mtr snatch straps rated at the correct weight for your vehicle

4. 1 piece of timber dowl bar about 300mm long (for joining straps) see below we will replace the magazine with the timber dowl bar as we will have decent forces exerted on the join that the magazine may not be the best esp in mud/water ..yes it can be wet in the desert ;D ;D

5. cable dampener 1 is ok but 2 is better

6. 2 x spare d-shckles rated for your set-up or just buy 4.5-4.75T ones google this and heaps come up ..just buy ones with the rating stamped on them under $20 each from most good 4x4 stores

7. Air Compressor anything will do too many to choose from but just check that it can handle the size tyres you have in regards to litres per minute of flow rate.

8. A SHOVEL

9. A UHF


If you have other gear feel free to bring whatever you like  ;D ;D this is just a bare minimum for those who may need to buy stuff .


the 2 x straps each is so that at least we can get some distance for a sand snatch and means that if your the one stuck then you have all the gear you need to set-up for a recovery only requiring another car to hook up too.


Some of us will have recovery traxs but I do not see them as a must have as with multipe vehicles and plenty of straps, tyres will be aired down and prob stay down for the whole treip but an air comp is good in case you have a slow leak or the like.

The dowl bar is the only safe way IMHO of joining to snatch straps, if you ever want to get them apart agian and is very very handy allow you to add straps as required if you need 3 or 4 without disconnecting from either vehicle . you can just add the extras into the middle.

This list is not designed to cover off on all events but forms a basic list of gear for those who may not have travelled before in sandy country, a 9 mtr strap alone is often way to small and results in a 2nd bogged vehicle.

If anyone thinks of anything else that should be added as a MUST HAVE then just PM and I will add it to the list.
