Title: reducing heat inside camper trailer
Post by: crocodile on January 21, 2019, 08:19:06 AM
Any ideas on reducing the heat inside the canvas?
Opening all the windows does not always work, as there is not always enough wind.
Thanks in advance

12v fans. Can get 12v ceiling fans like at home that you can hang from the roof. They have a good amount of air flow.

We have 2 x Coleman 12 v dc or internal battery powered fan in our Jayco Hawk. They made our recent camping trip in 32 c weather bearable

Hi , I have 2 of the 12v 3 blade ceiling fans I got off Ebay , I hang them above the bed area and over the floor area where the kids sleep and they do a great job of moving air around and make it heaps more comfortable. Just did a week at Airlie beach just after Xmas and even with the humidity they did a great job. (when u put the blades in the right way)
Also used them out Mt Isa way in the dry heat and same result , way more comfortable to sleep at night.
Cheers Simmo.

As Bird says Tropical roof .. Sling a tarp over the top and aim to have a decent  air gap,  going to be a bit of work though with all those extra poles / ropes, pegs etc etc ..
A mate made up a spider self standing frame to sling a Silver / White  poly tarp over that he put his big tent up under during long stays, Broke the heat a bit, but with no breeze it was still hot underneath .

We have a tropical roof made of Aircell insulation, this alone makes probably five or six degrees difference during the heat of the day. We combined this with a companion maxi Evap air conditioner from Snowys and we can get a comfortable sleep. If the conditions are humid, just turn of the cooling and use it as a fan. This unit is a personal cooler, not a unit to pull down the temp in 150sq ft tent.
If we are looking for extra circulation we also have 2 small 12v fans.
On a recent trip to Dareton we had daytime temps of 40c plus night time temps of low 20s. And we had no troubles sleeping.
Cheers

Makes you wonder why they don't just update to a caravan.

They probably don't have a lazy 30, 40 or 50 k laying around! :)

If you are planning on using fans you need to have one fan pulling in cooler air and another blowing out the hot air, its all about heat transfer.
Otherwise you are just circulating the same temperature air around and the only cooling effect you are getting is what your skin does, eg sweat.
I have thought about fitting a hatch fan to the tailgate of the hard floor camper, to draw air in from underneath the camper, the coolest part of the camp.
Then having a fan at the top of the apex of the camper tent blowing hot air out.
This is only a theory as I haven't set this system up yet.

Yes stopping the tent getting full sun is the best option, eg a tarp, but for easy and quick set up and pack up this is not an option for me.
Its about getting the hot air out and drawing cool air in, this is the only way I can see how you can keep the inside cool.

At present I have a tropical roof, and 2 fans inside camper just blowing air around.

I have the misting fan version of this.  If you don't mind getting a bit wet then they work well!

Only available occasionally I was looking all year but found one at Echuca before Christmas.

That's the computer fan up the top? Ours is older and didn't have that.
That's why I was thinking a vent fan in the tailgate for when the camper is open.
That way it is drawing in cool air from under the camper.
Just haven't got the balls to cut that big of a hole in the tail gate.

Correct.
I don't think that a hole in the tail gate is advisable.
Dust will come in when you drive around unless you tape it off every time you drive on a gravel road.
Better to make something up what can be hung at the mesh door or window.

Only one problem with ceiling fans, hot air rises, so you are actually pushing hot air down onto you. Probably better to try and draw air from under the trailer,  where the air has been shaded, thats why the old queenslander has wide verandahs arounf the house to help cool the air coming in.

It can depend on what type of heat, just plain middle of the day heat you are best off with a tropical roof / solarblanket made from some insulation. Humidity at night is best dealt with a fan to keep the air circulating, you can get one like the one linked earlier or also pick them up quite cheaply on eBay https://www.ebay.com.au/itm/3-Blade-Ceiling-Fan-12V-0-7AMP-High-Quality-Caravan-Camping-Suit-For-Solar-Pow/151579786066?epid=1089598912&hash=item234adbfb52:rk:24:pf:0 (https://www.ebay.com.au/itm/3-Blade-Ceiling-Fan-12V-0-7AMP-High-Quality-Caravan-Camping-Suit-For-Solar-Pow/151579786066?epid=1089598912&hash=item234adbfb52:rk:24:pf:0) I find the big fan slowly moving the air far more preferable than a small fan blowing at one part of you but each to their own.

I t would be a sealed unit and only open when needed. The same as what goes on top of caravans.
Was only a thought!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Thanks for all the feedback, much appreciated.
It looks like it is between fans and solar blanket.
The solar blankets do seem a bit pricey, I might look at making one myself.
I was also thinking of using a few old PC fans to try and draw out the hot air.

I would think you would want a few 8inch case fans to make much difference over 1 normal size desk type fan with the amount of heat and area your trying to cool..

I made my own from the bubble wrap silver foil rolls. You can buy it  1200mm wide. Used two lengths taped together with silver sisal tape. Then punched metal rings along the edges. Used it for 6month trip around OZ with a camper trailer. Amazing the difference it made. Cost $50 all up.

I have one of the Ryobi fans
https://www.ryobi.com.au/products/details/18v-one-hybrid-fan (https://www.ryobi.com.au/products/details/18v-one-hybrid-fan)

Have tied a bit of rope across the middle of the camper and hang it from there pointed towards the bed of a night time. I use other Ryobi things while camping so a battery is not a big issue. I have a 12V Ryobi charger so can charge them while away as well.
A 4A battery will run the fan all night on low which is all you need as it pushes a fair bit of air. The fast speed gets a bit noisy
