Well it was over 2 years ago that I come up with the idea for the 2009 Cape Trip and the great adventures we all had so I have decided to organise another one.
This trip we will head to some different places and stay a little longer in some. Just like the last trip the itinerary, when done, can change depending on road conditions and members can either follow the itinerary or do their own stuff but you will miss the fun.
We will be looking to go in the 2011 June / July Qld school holidays.
We will stick to the same numbers around 18 vehicles.
If you want to recap the fun we had see below.

And I won't be driving the Navara this time either.... so no spare clutches required!
-
Count me in as a possible for down South. Am planning a big trip for around that time and will try and link it all together.
Garrick
-
I'm in. I read those reports with envy and would love to make the trip.
Mal
-
I have enjoyed all the trips, but this is the one that I really want to do.
We're in!
-
I think I am going to cry :'(
The 2011 Qld July school holidays are from 24th June - 11th July whereas the SA ones are from 8th July - 25th July. Only 3 days overlap and with Catie being a school teacher she can't get the extra time off.
I was so envious of you guys going on the last trip!!!
However, she was talking about going back to uni though for further study ........
-
Hi McGirr,
We are going anyway as it was going to be our belated honeymoon trip and as we hadn't locked in dates I don't see why we shouldn't join you and the thought of going in a group is much more appealing than possibly solo as we were intending ::)
So lock us in eddy, and now no need to phone a friend
We were looking at adding some of the gulf country in to our original trip so will probably just go there once we separate after the cape as we were looking at around 6 weeks away
-
We are very interested in attending.
Daz n Bec
-
Very keen to do this trip. Will await the formal call for interest with much anticipation
-
I will have the intinerary up once Brett has the trip up on the Child Boards.

Seeing as I missed the last one put me down for this one. Attempt number 2. 8)

Hi McGirr,
I was thinking of a cape trip this year, But next year with the Myswag gang sounded like a better option and gives me time to get over a medical issue, please add me to the list.

mmmmmmmmmmmmmm sounds interesting???
I had pencilled in a 2011 Cape York Trip just recently with some friends.
timing yet to be confirmed!
I shall follow this thread intensely!

Does this trip require a heavily modified 4wd?
We have an NS Paj with 2 inch lift, BFG AT's, snorkel, diff breathers, steel bash plates, rear diff lock and some other touring bits. Would this be suitable?
My wife and I are dead keen to do a Cape trip with the new CT but would prefer to do it with a tagalong (or group) trip as we won't have a lot of 4wd experience towing a CT. Plenty of vehicle only experience though.
Cheers, Sam.

All I can say is Dam you all ;D We were going this year with good friends but it's just to far to come from Broome so it will be 2011 for us, hope a few of you don't go this year so you can go next year. However, we are doing the Canning this year if any one wants to come over to play
-
We were planning on this year but it isn't going to happen, so put us down for 2011 trip as it would be great to go with other people.
-
Hi McGirr,
Is it worth taking a tinny with us, we were thinking it might be a bit of a hindrance on the cape leg but definitely wanted it for the later part through the gulf, we were only thinking of fitting the "H" frame or tradesman type racks not a swingover for the camper and the loading/unloading might be a pest everyday.

Just Cruzin took his tinnie with him but he was heading to the Gulf and Darwin. You can hire boats at the Cape.
You may want to store it in Cairns and pick it up on the way back through.

Symon, Just just sent Steve & Viv a PM about this trip and his post. We are the good friends that were suppose to be going with them. I think he may have had oine tooooo many glasses of red when he post.

Yea, good on ya.. So for the purpose of this thread we would love to put our names down (steveand viv and Frostd) starters for the 2011 Cape Trip if that's OK..
Steve

McGirr, As Steve & Viv indicated, we would like to put our names down for this trip as well. Love to meet up with some new friends, will be watching to see how things progress.

Provided your clutch holds together all you really need is good shockies and tyres.

It's an auto, so no clutch to worry about

I would be interested, what date do you think the trip would be finished? I want to be in Alice Springs on the 13th July that year, so providing I've got a few days after the finish date I would be very keen - have to see what my wife thinks of the idea, but Im sure she'll be keen too

Hi McGirr count me in for this as the last one was a bit rushed for my return due to the double crossing of the Simpson last year 2009 so this time I will get to enjoy the slower trip back to Cairns in 2011.

Hi Karen
Your trip was more than tempting but with only so much leave I need to make sure they don't over lap and I did enjoy Magoo's company as I did everyone that was away on Cape 09 trip.
I have to fit a 15 day cruise in before the gulf trip this year (hard life) and a few days with Annie and Peter mid year also so basically your trips missed out.

We interested, just a matter of working it in.

You probably cant take a dog seeing as how you stay in National Parks?

The rangers are strick about dogs if they catch you but iit depends on if they inspect the camp. Twin Falls is the only place you will have a problem.

Would I get all the way up there Ive got a diesel prado and Im pulling a Goldstream Storm camper.Ive pulled it through some pretty hairy places but I dont know what to really expect going up the Cape.Ive got recovery gear, a winch, slightly heavier springs and shocks and I am just about to put some Bfg Ats on it

I cannot see a problem as taking it nice and slow should be ok. The OTL has a lot of crossings that change every year.
You can bypass certain tracks if you are unsure as when we head off when you talk to other travellers their opinion of tracks will always vary depending what they are used to.
I hope this helps.

Thanks McGirr,I wouldnt mind meeting some of the mob on this forum. Will check dates etc. and see if we can make it

McGirr, if you could add John and myself to the Cape York trip please. We were pondering going this year but we felt it would be better going with others, particularly those who have done it before. Thanks.

McGirr - Thanks for referring me on to this section.
The My Swag group trip sounds brilliant to me. I mentioned it to the Missus and she wondered about the dog. My thoughts are put him in a kennel & pick him up on the way back.
Now to convince the Missus to delay the trip North to fit with My Swag.
Cheers - BB

You are more than welcome to come on this trip. I will call for numbers around December. Most parties who went on the last trip would not have gone without being in a group.

Hello Mark
Could you add my hubby Greg and I to your tentative list as well as two friends in their own vehicle? We plan to do the Cape in Winter 2011 to celebrate my 50th so timing is perfect. We are novices however. Have purchased a custom built CT that has already done the Cape and Broome via Tanami Desert so we know the CT can do it. Cheers!

Not a problem. As this is a members only trip we would need your friends to join up to the forum.

Hi Mark,
Put us on the tentative list also. Kids have been keen as mustard to go for a while now, with my 6 year old constantly asking when are going to go. Now to work on the work front to make it happen.

Mate Karen took a stock standard Nissan to the Cape no problems. I would recommend all terrain tyres and if possible a lift in the vehicle as some of the crossings you will scrape on.

Thank god i logged on. I have been flat out with work lately and renovating the house this year so we havnt even planned on going camping this year. Put us down as a definate. By that time it will be well overdue to catch up with fellow myswaggers again.
Some work needs doing to CT and ute but we will be ready.
Our kids were too little for last years, so this will be great, especially with a group as i would be hesitant to do it alone.
COUNT US IN :)
myself, wife and 2 kids aged 5 and 3 in june 2011.

Hi McGirr.
I know that there is a fair bit of Nissan/Toyota s*i# slinging on these trips and all I can say is bring it on. Please book me in for this trip and I will be to show of my swing out outboard motor rack to the members of this great forum.

Don't forget those deluded Mitsubishi drivers poor souls

I am new to this site (have been on PradoPoint for awhile) but so far have had a great read. We were actually looking at visiting the Cape either 2011 or 2012 after purchasing our CT last year. Is this something that you do each year or every few years. Can you put us on the list as we are keen to see the tip of Australia. What are the minimum requirements vehicle wise as we have just picked up a new 150 series Prado.

The quickest way to upgrade the Prado up to scratch, would be to trade it in on a Nissan. ;D :cup:

hopefully if there is room and we have our new 4wd we can go. So if there is space, put us down as a maybe.

I just plotted the intineray looks unreal can't wait.

Thanks McGirr,
Will be trying to get some cash put away for some upgrades to the Prado. Hopefully tax time will be worthwhile.

Gee with all the reports from people heading to the Cape this year we are may have to close it just for ourselves for a couple of weeks.
What we will need is a few road closed signs and detour signs. That will fix things. ;D

As new members of my swag i would love to join your trip to the tip as we where planing be there on our trip around oz around june/july.
Thats if we get a spot/invite
-
Despite 300 people putting their hands up I know from personal experience that many will not be able to make it, so there should be enough spots for those who are still able to make it.
-
we will be a definite if we get a birth as like i said we had planed to get to the tip on our trip around June July anyway and what a destination to to head to on your first my swag trip/gathering
-
If there's room please put us down as a 'more than likely'. 2 adults.
By December, when you finalise the list, the Missus will have made up my mind for us.
I'm still unsure what to do about the mutt. Any suggestions? Are dogs okay or are they a nuisance for example access to National Parks etc. Perhaps a kennel at Cooktown is the way to go? ???
Suggestions welcome. Please no croc jokes. :D
Regards - BB

There is a place in Kuranda that looks after dogs. Highly recommended.
Mark
-
Hi Mark, put down as a possible.
I've got a 07 bt50 dual cab with a rear diff lock, factory bullbar. What else would you recommend for my vehicle.
BERT
-
We are also keen on the trip but I didn't put us down as I saw there was already quite a few numbers. We are more seriously planning to do the cape in June/July now so I thought I would put our names in. There will be 2 adults and 4 kids.
thanks

What happens if everyone turns up, or even half? Even still count on another 2 adults and 3 billy lids.

one day i will get up there, gotta get back over east 1st. am planning to head up to the Mitchell falls about the same time.
have a great trip guys
cheers

so what is the final count and when do we need to start the prep work
-
so what is the final count and when do we need to start the prep work
We will look at the final count in December as to who can make the trip for those who put their name down. The hardest thing is it would be impossible to take 43 cars in one go so i will look at doing 2 groups with the number I have. I cannot take any more names as organising this amount of cars and campers we would be slowing everyone down and would not be able to get into some places.
Stay tuned.

Hubby and I did the Cape mid 2008 with a standard 2005 3lt diesel manual Prado with snorkel, all terrain tyres only. Weren't towing anything - went in convoy with our son "dorey76", who was towing a Trackabout. Awesome trip. Did the old Telegraph track and Frenchmans track - Prado never missed a beat. We so want to do the Cape again one day when we have our own camper trailer but it won't be next year. Will have the camper by mid year and are off to visit our son who now lives in the NT. Highly recommend the Cape - great adventure. Sharyn
-
If its early June I would love to come as off work for 6 weeks
You have mentioned a few people interested but is there a tally as such? Just wondering as it would interesting to see
And as previously mentioned somewhere are pets allowed and I heard a nasty rumor about no alcohol up there due to restrictions, I would hate to get to the top and not open a cold one

Garry
At the moment I have alot of members who have their name down already. I would like to take everyone but impossible to do. I will look at the current members in december who are on the list and go from there as I have to work out getting everyone into places.

G'day All,
I am new to the forum (have just starting looking for a CT), but am keen to do a Cape York run in the future (obviously not this year). I know there is lots on info regarding Cake York, and what to bring in the forum, but just have a question about your vehicle, and though I'd ask the people in the know......
I have a 2003 Disco II diesel, it's pretty standard, only add ons are a bullbar and cargo carrier. Am going to invest in some new suspension (with a lift) when we get our CT, and some new AT tyres (as current ones are getting to the end of their life). Have some recovery gear, snatch strap and high lift jack. Can anyone suggest any other requirements, vehicle wise, only other thing that comes to mind is a snorkel looking at some of those creek crossings.
Cheers,
Nick
-
Hi Nick
A snorkel and what else you are going to get is ok for a Cape Trip.
Mark
-
If this bloody rain doesn't stop soon I'll be extending my snorkel up another 3 feet, ;D that should keep us above the water line
Looking forward to the challenges of the Cape this year............it should be a trip to remember.
Make sure you all have plenty of video time on your cameras, we might even make it onto Funniest Home Videos. ;D
John K
-
JK, I think you are spot on with the amount of water that is going to be around. I am trying to design a prop to install on the back of the patrol ;D . If I bog up all the air intakes and seal the doors, it should float.
-
Frosty.. Don't forget the Tirfor and gloves mate. Is Nat up to winching yet ;D
-
The tirfor is the first thing being put in with a new set of gloves. Wore the last set out, lifting sandstone around the house. Nats getting better.
-
Thanks Mark. Hopefully will be up for it in 2012 or 2013.
Cheers,
Nick
