Bye bye tent pegs?

Hi,
    Went to the Lakes for the LWE, bit not tropical, but only a few snow flurries and lots of wind.
The camp at Dago Point is not very tent peg friendly so we took some Bugle Head screws and a rattle gun.
Brilliant!
Some washers would be handy for the Oztent D rings, but holding down shade cloth for a mat was the best - no tripping over a counter sunk screw just below ground level.
So much easier.

What ever works, Cheers for sharing what worked for you, I'll try it, yeah I've seen the Screw pegs also.
Remember being camped at Leigh Crk(2011), bent a few pegs.
I then went  to Y12 Reo bar & a bigger hammer


You don't use magic to disappear, ya use a 4x4 & Swag.

Hi,
   I took a box of 5mm hex about 120mm, and my son took a bag of landscape screws with a 6mm hex drive about 200mm.
We both thought of it independently. I may have been influenced from advertising  for Peggy Pegs, but had bugleheads on hand from a recent decking job.

Aldi and Bunnings have been selling kits for years and I made my own 10 or 11 years ago, sheesh.

Been using 225mm landscaping screws with a 6mm hex driver and a mud flap washer for years, for hard ground I also carry a 6mm x 300mm masonry drill to pre drill a hole if need be, never used it yet.

This trip I only used the Aldi screw in pegs that I picked up a while back, rather than bashing in normal pegs.

Worked great for both the awning hold-down ropes, & also the groundsheet (although we did trip on them a couple of times )

Then started thinking about the 10+kg weight of the peg bag, with assorted pegs & a couple of hammers, vs a box of screw pegs at <1kg, plus a battery drill that gets used for other things as well ...

I know my BiL uses 200mm hex heads + washers for his floor, so 6-8 of them, plus 4 "normal" screw pegs, would be even lighter again!

Bugle head screws can fill with crap, sand etc, makes them more difficult to get out especially in really hard ground. Thats why I use coach bolts...

yea remember a thread long ago showing the advantage of coach bolts and cordless...

Would have saved me a dozen pegs in Flinders few years ago in their concrete "dirt"

Not to mention the ease retrieving at the end of your stay

I have used coach bolts but I have found the screws with welded nuts work better for me.

On a slight tangent -
Nothing beats the sound of an impact driver going flat tack from the people that rocked up to the peaceful camp at 8pm haha!!
Better than the ones who are packing up at 5am for an early start and they use the impact driver to wind up the van stabilisers... surely you can use the hand winder at that time of the morning?
I think I'm officially getting old.

But who, after clanging & clattering at 5-6am, don't actually pull out until 9-10, then you pass them an hour down the road, where they've stopped for morning tea!

I feel your pain, nab! Once had a bloke parked near us do 3 laps of he's van adjusting the 4 van legs with an impact driver. 3 bloody loud laps!! It's one of my biggest hates now.

They are great, survived the Flinders and there is nothing better than banging in a peg to announce to the world that you have arrived. I purchased a long handle puller which makes it easier to get out as well

$9.95 for a box of 12 I think. I picked up a set and will give them a go.

Not expecting huge quality. Just want to test the idea out before i spend up on the expensive brand(s)...

I've them for years, just don't forget to drill out the plastic part a bit before you use them

Ah, so the plastic double hook is supposed to be able to spin is it

My Aldi ones has it fixed in place, so I just put the screw shaft through the loop on the tent rope spring, & fasten them down that way!

No, but I knocked the screw out and drilled the hole out about 1mm and ground off the little lugs on the screw.
Now they are easy to use, you can hold the hook in position while running in the screw.
Another tip , if you hit a small rock give the screw a bash with a mash hammer.

I think they are great, i have 4 boxes, so 48 screws, I have about 20 flat, square washers that I use. To secure camping mats, gazebo legs etc, just remove the plastic hook bit. (No trip hazard on mats) I still carry sand pegs for fine loose sand, but everything else is definitely screwed.
