Cabin Fever
« on: April 02, 2020, 09:48:20 AM »
What are into week 2 of the lock down.   With talk the lock downs going for at least 3 months until the end of June.

How we all coping.

https://www.verywellmind.com/cabin-fever-fear-of-isolation-2671734

Symptoms

Not everyone suffering from cabin fever will experience exactly the same symptoms, but many people report feeling intensely irritable or restless. Other commonly experienced effects are:

Restlessness
Lethargy
Sadness or depression
Trouble concentrating
Lack of patience
Food cravings
Decreased motivation
Social Isolation
Difficulty waking
Frequent napping
Hopelessness
Changes in weight
Inability to cope with stress

Note that these symptoms may also be indicative of a wide range of other disorders, and only a trained mental health professional can make an accurate diagnosis. In addition, not everyone who fears being cooped up at home in the winter has cabin fever. Only when someone exhibits several of the symptoms mentioned above is a phobia more likely.

Coping With Cabin Fever

Like any mental health condition, cabin fever? is best treated with the assistance of a therapist or other trained mental health professional. However, if your symptoms are relatively mild, taking active steps to combat your feelings may be enough to help you feel better.

Get Out of the House: If you are housebound, this may not always be possible. But if you are able to go outside, even for a short time, take advantage of that opportunity. Exposure to daylight can help regulate the body's natural cycles, and exercise releases endorphins, creating a natural high. Even a quick stroll can help you feel better quickly. If you are not able to leave the house at all, get close to a window and start moving around.
Maintain Normal Eating Patterns: For many of us, a day stuck at home is an excuse to overindulge in junk food. Others skip meals altogether. However, eating right can increase our energy levels and motivation. You may feel less hungry if you are getting less exercise, but monitor your eating habits to ensure that you maintain the proper balance of nutrition. Limit high-sugar, high-fat snacks and drink plenty of water.

Set Goals: When you are stuck in the house, you may be more likely to while away the time doing nothing of importance. Set daily and weekly goals, and track your progress toward completion. Make sure that your goals are reasonable, and reward yourself for meeting each milestone.

Use Your Brain: Although TV is a distraction, it is also relatively mindless. Work crossword puzzles, read books or play board games. Stimulating your mind can help keep you moving forward and reduce feelings of isolation and helplessness.
Exercise: Even if you cannot leave the house, find a way to stay physically active while indoors. Regular physical activity can help burn off any extra energy you have from being cooped up indoors. Indoor exercise ideas include workout videos, bodyweight workouts, and online workout routines.

But seriously, if you are having problems please ask for help, either GP, Life Line, Beyond Blue etc.

Easy to see people could go a little stir crazy. Mrs Spada is now working from home and with school closed, Miss Spada (only child) is home also. I'm still working, but I'm used to getting home at lunchtime to a peaceful empty house. Now when I get home, Miss Spada is bored from having no other kids to play with, Mrs Spada is frustrated from dealing with work and a bored kid, and my quiet house is in turmoil. Least when I get home I can keep Miss Spada occupied for a bit, but I'd recon there are some household that will find it quite a challenge living in close quarters without the usual extra-curricular distractions of normal life?

On a side note, I suspect a lot of people will start to have a greater (or even some) appreciation for the work that teachers do  >:D

On my second week working from home full time. Starting to miss some of those ‘in person’ meetings that were sometimes considered a nuisance!

Luckily my kids are teenagers so keep themselves entertained. I really do feel for those with younger kids.

And so far my internet has been holding up well, but same can’t be said for some of my teammates.

On week 3 wfh, we've been told until as least 24/4, I expect that to extend. I usually wfh 1 day a week, doing it 5 days a week is taking some getting used to. We have a virtual daily morning stand-up meeting for the entire team, everybody must have audio and video and not be on mute. We also have every other day a virtual lunch meeting, that is optional, where you can talk crap and socialise.

Wife is still going to her office everyday, although as of next week she'll is going to working every other day, that is going to be interesting >:D

Son is fine as long as there is Internet and the Fortnite servers stay up ;D

Yep going through the challenges of a not so well jury rigged  internet schooling atm too ..
Miss Edz first year highschool teachers, some dont realy seem to be all that computer literate or able / want  to convert to a digital class teaching set up . If they dont improve. I'm thinking of registering her into the  Distance Education Schooling setup ..
Not that I'm all that bright on computers  either, But it seems to me the teachers should still have their lesson plans and should only be a copy n paste   to load a periods worth of lesson onto the schools student access site in bullet point form  and be available for students to contact them with queries .. Either working from home or from school .
No different to us using the forum here or Face crap in almost real time ..

I've worked from home full time for the better part of the last 10 years, the only thing I'm not doing these days is hopping on and off 4-6 flights around the country per week.
The kids have always heard me say I'm going to work when i walk out the back door heading to my office. They keep the noise down and know not to disturb me during working hours.

The kids are pretty good at entertaining themselves during the day, but this week they've been a bit over YouTube by the time I walk back in the house in the afternoons.
They don't want to watch TV when I'm in the house in the evenings, so we've been playing board games most nights. Last night we played Monopoly in the PS4, they successfully bankrupted me... ;)
Apparently we're playing Trivial Pursuit on the PS4 tonight. It will either be my redemption or yet another embarrassment.... ;D

To my surprise the kids have actually wanted to do things outside the house too.
I took the whipper-snipper into the bush on the weekend and cleaned up most of the walking tracks around our property so they can play down in the creek whenever they like. Which they've done a couple of times.
I spotted one of the girls out chasing butterflies around the yards with one of the nets the other day (has anyone else noticed how many butterflies are out these days?).

I will have a bit more free time coming up, we just received official notice of a block of forced annual leave at the end of the month.
So I guess I'll have a bit of time to think of some more cool outside stuff to do with the kids.
There will be some family gardening for sure, but I might knock up some sort of castle or fort to stimulate a bit of imagination play. They love that stuff.

As for home schooling..... I have know idea what to do with that one... ???

Mine was working well and i was actually getting some extra exercise in

All came undone today however as i came off the bike at about 25k and ended up at the ER for an xray on the collar bone. Luckily no break, they wanted me to hang around so they could patch up the missing skin but a hospital was the last place i wanted to be ATM so i took myself to the chemist bought a heap of Betadine and swore the house down as i cleaned my war wounds off in the shower

To add insult to injury i came off as i swerved to miss a dog. It just so happens that i own said dog that my wife was walking at the time.

I dont know who was more shocked, me the missus, the dog  or the couple that i came off in front of

Thanks mate one serious thing is that i will never doubt a helmet again. While probably not serious there definitely would have been stitches and a nice concussion involved if i did not have the skid lid on when i went down

Maybe we can start up the MySwag School of Distance Education.  The curriculum would be very broad with plenty of different points of view.  Not sure how the classes on politics, globalisation and electrical technology would go though ;D

Well I obviously didn’t have my tinfoil hat on when I wrote that post and big brother was able to read my brainwaves. About 2 minutes after posting that the school sent through the login details and the full plan for next term. ;)

And it turns out the building something outside idea was easier to get moving then I thought.
I suggested it while we where having lunch.
As soon as we finished eating they where out in the corner of the garden clearing the site ready for construction to start.... ;D

"BREAKING: Morrison warns restrictions will be six months, maybe longer
By Kate Kachor19:14
Prime Minister Scott Morrison says Australian must prepare for coronavirus restrictions on their daily life to continue past a six-month period.

"Those who think this can all be done in a couple of weeks just isn't true," Mr Morrison said in a live interview with A Current Affair host Tracy Grimshaw.

"I'm trying to get Australians to understand that this isn't a quick fix... at least six months, it could be longer."

Today marks 3 weeks for me, 4 weeks for my mrs working from home and  2 weeks of our 3 young boys all being here too.          The 6yo constantly pesters for the TV/ipad/nintento, the 4yo has regressed and been crapping in his jocks,  the 2yo is a 2yo so being a demanding little @#$^.       It's bloody hard in a lot of ways but we're slowly finding a groove and I'd say we're coping just fine.

Cabin fever is mitigated a lot by the fact we're in a decent size house with lots of yard  to play in and nice bush views out the windows.     Thank god we upsized from our tiny 2br townhouse ~2yrs ago.

The 6 month duration figure has been used by our Management since the business transformation outset four or more weeks ago.

It doesnt necessarily mean that we will be locked down in home for 6 months, but will probably mean that interstate/regional travel restrictions (along with overseas travel) along with social isolation whilst outdoors will continue for a fair while.  There will have to be a pretty long period of no new cases reported in any state before localised lock down restrictions are eased (as in Wuhan, where they were locked down for two months)

Fortress Tasmania (as our Premier calls it) intends to lock itself down from the rest of Oz for as long as it takes.

Stay Healthy everyone.

Yes. We (health services) were shown modelling weeks ago that suggested a peak in July August with the flattening the curve approach. Watch China for new outbreaks.
