Title: 12v Fans
Post by: tryagain on November 05, 2016, 11:57:04 AM
Has anyone had any experience with these 12v ceiling fans, (http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/3-Blade-Ceiling-Fan-12V-0-7AMP-High-Quality-Caravan-Camping-Suit-For-Solar-Pow-/151579786066?hash=item234adbfb52:g:vnkAAOSwBahU3Z2d) with the weather heating up I thought they might be a good way of keeping cooler in the camper, they seem cheap enough at $12.58ea but nut sure how much they would hurt when you accidentally put your hand in one. They have a diameter of 50cm and a draw of about 0.7A so I think that would probably suit a camper.

(https://ae01.alicdn.com/kf/HTB1xP2vNpXXXXbxaXXXq6xXFXXXV/seasonal-discount-12V-DC-ceiling-fan-Wholesale-12v-dc-ceiling-fan-solar-ceiling-fan-Domestic-emergency.jpg_640x640.jpg)

They do sell ones with speed controllers for about double the price (which is still cheap) and would probably be safer as you could turn it down to a suitable speed but I am guessing that they are just a variable resistor and, it would be more energy efficient (and cheaper) to build one using a little PWM controller like one of these (http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/351896064199) and put it in a box like this (http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/Black-Plastic-Electronic-Waterproof-Cover-Project-Instrument-Case-Enclosure-Box-/181817251009?var=&hash=item2a552714c1:m:mgySIq3UlW_rj5n0WkclF3Q)

Have you had experience with them?
or just writing them off because they are cheap?

I looked at those fans - but did not buy because I perceived the price as "too cheap"...

Settled with 2 of these units

I have them mounted onto a short inverted T piece (opposite each other) - and this is hanging off the centre rail of the awning.

Having big blades - they work really well;  stirring up a lot of air and helping to keep the bugs at bay...

Though they don't draw a lot of amps - (2 x 1.5amp/hr);  battery consumption is not a biggy for my set up...

Interesting topic....fans......not sure how the mexicans go, but in NSW, we rarely have a hot night camping....not by 10pm or later ?

I could imagine in northern queensland it might be muggy of a night.....but in those conditions, does a fan make a lot of difference ??

we actually have one of the exact fans in the OP and it is great.

we just put up a spreader bar above our bed, hook it on with velcro tape and have it on all night.  works a treat and makes a huge difference in the humid weather.

it's not too loud and doesn't draw much power.  i changed the alligator clips to anderson powerpoles...

seriously considering getting another one.

Not so much the heat but the stillness that kills you. I brought one of these and is fantastic.

3 speeds, moves the air really well and keeps you sleeping nicely

Power Levels: LOW- 1.7AMPS, MED - 2.3 AMPS, HIGH - 3.0 AMPS

Helps pump the hot air around in circles.

Keeping the air moving beats it not moving at all.

Camp in the Queensland humidity for a while and you'd appreciate any air movement.

Thanks for that, its just what I was looking for. Generally, I really don't like pedestal fans but like ceiling fans so a lot of the other options don't really interest me. A couple of questions
Do you worry about sitting up in the middle of the night and getting yourself with it or is it small/light enough that it wouldn't do any damage?
Do you find the speed ok or would it be better if you could adjust it?

Not so much the heat but the humidity as others have said. It's the same both living and camping in QLD the breeze normally stops at night so it feels a whole lot more muggy. A fan moving the air around can make a big difference.

Ive had one for quite some time now & its great. It uses a brushless BLDC motor & you wont get hurt if you do get caught with the blades. The comments of you get what you pay for these days just doesnt always cut it.

Got a couple of these , they work well and are quiet too .. And yep , I've got it to contact my person twice now , no pain but makes sure I'm awake!!!

May need one of those for the camp fire....plenty of hot air gets expelled around one !! lol

I've been camping for approx 250 times and I'd say 2 times it's been "hot" come sleep time.....nothing a couple of extra beers didn't fix !!  ;D

Looks like (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_erq89aHDE0&t=6s) they use a stepper motor inside which if so means my idea for a speed controller wouldn't work.

Yeah just noticed that too although I was a bit peeved I'd paid more like the $60 for mine some time back and that was a reasonable price compared to some. Good clickbait to get you looking at their site I guess.

Fantastic fans are a good option as they have an opening hatch and can either pull air in or out with variable speed.
Buy one from the states though they are way to much here

Well, after finally ordering a one a few days ago it rocked up by courier today, not bad for $12.58 altogether.  Hooked it up to the camper battery and initial observations are
  • First reaction whilst it was in the box was "that cute" It looked smaller than I'd imagined but after I assembled it, it was as expected.
  • It seems to have a good output, a pretty large volume at low velocity which I like  as opposed to a smaller volume at high velocity of a lot of the smaller fans
  • When giving it a spin it seemed a bit clunky, One of the reviews I saw on youtube of them someone also said this but then in a later review said it had seemed to wear in. I have it running at the moment and will leave it for a few hours to see if it makes a difference.
  • Probably slightly noisier than expected, I wouldn't call it loud but also wouldn't call it quiet, the review mentioned above also said it got quieter after wearing in. Its noise is never going to effect my sleeping but I have read on here some people complain about the noise their fridge fan makes so might be something to consider for those who are a bit precious about their noise.
  • I was a bit concerned about the kids getting injured from putting their hand etc into one, after giving it a try I think it would likely cause tears but not blood.
  • A bit of a plus and a minus is that it is very compact in the box, so packed up like this it will take hardly any space, the minus bit is that for transport in a camper I think it will likely require being pulled apart which entails one screw for each of the 3 fan blades, it's not a biggie but just something else to have to do.

your observations are exactly the same as mine.

just on the pack up, i keep a small screwdriver and some extra screws in a ziplock bag and remove the blades when packing away.  only takes a minute and you always have the screwdriver handy.
