3-4 Days in the Blue Mountains

We are heading up to the Blue Mountains at the end of Feb and looking for somewhere to camp with the CT for 3-4 nights. Any suggestions on where would be a good base for exploring from? Planning on doing some hikes while we are there.

If you want to be near the tourist destinations around Katoomba area like the three sisters and Echo point then either the Katoomba caravan park or Blackheath caravan parks will be suitable but involve a fee.

Blackheath will be a bit closer if you want to head out to the Jenolan Caves area and a trip beyond that to the Kanangra Wall (plateau) a worth while trip. Also a trip to the Mt Tomah botanical gardens is a nice option.
There are a few national park camps around about with limited facilities.
Another option a bit further away at Lithgow direction is Lake Lyell http://lakelyellrecreationpark.com.au

The ruined castle (a rock formation) is a walk I always used to like doing, you need to scramble up a few rocks to get to the top to enjoy the view but then an uninterrupted 360deg view.

Newnes is good camping and hiking.
You need to be self contained.
A 4wd will get you over the river to better camping.
It is about 40 mins from Lithgow.
You can walk around the old shale oil site from the camp.
Walk up to the glow worm tunnels from camp or drive part of the way.
Also you can walk to Glen Davis on the Pipeline track.
Camping at Glen Davis not the one in town the NPWS area.
Boyd River camp ground is close to a lot of hiking, Kanangara walls, Jenolan Caves and Uni Rover trail to the Kowmung River (hiking).
Wiki Camps should be your friend.
I dont do caravan parks so I cant help you there.

Came here to say Lake Lyell is good if there is water. Newnes is great with the Glowworm tunnel. The State forest out from Lake Lyell is very good also.

also look at which direction your travelling from. Are you coming out of Sydney or from Dubbo/Bathurst?

If from Dubbo/Bathurst then look at Jenolan Caves/ Kanangra Boyd for looks and touristy things. can be done in a day

If you have done an canyoning or just enjoy a paddle down a cold creek Mount Wilson - but must have good levels of map reading

Cathedral Reserve at Mt Wilson? Depends on which bit of the Mountains you're planning to visit - it's a bit of a trek to Katoomba (45mins or so). Lots of liloing and canyoning from the general area plus some shorter walks.

It's free and basic but quite nice last time I was there.

Could you cross with a Toyota Kluger? (Assuming the crossing is at normal depth and no rainfall).

I think so I have seen an AWD Audi wagon over that side.
The river crossing is sandy and rutted you might have issues if towing a camper.
Clearance under the difs might be an issue if it has had a lot of traffic.
The other options are not to cross the river or camp on the grassed area at the pub.
The negatives of these are the greater chance of bogans and out the front of the pub can be dusty dure traffic and crowding.
Use your discretion before attempting to cross and  always walk it first.
Glen Davis is another option .

Forget the camper.....Just go and stay at the Fairmont or Lilianfels and have a fabulous weekend splurge  ;D ;D

Emirates Wolgan Valley is about $2500.00 a night and about 7 ks from Newnes.We were camped at Newnes one weekend and went for a swin in the river beside the road that goes to Newnes. There was a really great couple up there swimming  with us, the irony was they were swimming in the same river as us whilst staying at the Emirates resort.
I reckon thier stay at Emirates probably could of paid for my Modcon camper.
My stay was free with a million star view.

Thanks Ronnie, it has been on my list for a long time. Might leave it until I manage to upgrade the tug to something with a bit more capability.
