Title: Multi Tool surgestion..what have you got
Post by: albany_nomads on May 07, 2011, 10:21:32 PM
I'm thinking about buying myself a multi tool and I was wondering if you folks may have some suggestions of various weird shape multi tools that you've got.
I'm was tossing up between Leatherman..and..Gerber..though Gerber seem about 30 percent cheaper.
But I'm open to suggestions..every year some weird and wonderful shape tools come on the market  ....Thanks in advance

I use a leatherman skeletool. It's great and has only the required tools: knife, pliers and flat/phillips screwdriver. I don't see any use for all of the other stuff. What I really like is it's size and weight, you hardly notice it on.

Leatherman "Wave", had it for 10 years and still doing what it's meant to :cup:     Had a SOG but broke the jaws on the pliers pulling a bolt out of a truck tyre  :-[ .

G'day mate,

The Mrs bought me a Leatherman about 12 yrs ago........ it's been on my belt for every shift since the day i got it, hardly a day goes past that i don't use it for something, also just last year the original canvas pouch finally wore out, so i replaced it with a Leather Leatherman pouch, should be good for at least another ten years now....... the tool is still as good as new, everynow and then i give the blade on the straight edge knife a touch up, occasionally i run it under boiling water when at work, normally to cut up an orange for smoko or something........ then also give it a hit with WD40 or CRC...... (hence the boiling water before prepping food, hehehe)................. it's been on my hip in Aus, SE Asia and PNG and i consider it my good luck charm...... wouldn't be without it.

I have a Gerber.   It's a bit chunkier than the Leatherman and the cast handle is a more comfortable grip.   The pliers are as strong as my old "real" pliers.

Another vote for the skeletool here, I wanted a lightweight tool with just the essentials, Quite cheap on Ebay. The only place to buy these tools at the right price.

I personally have a Gerber about 10 years old, got used every day when I was on the tools.

A mate of mine collects these things and swears by Leatherman. He also has tools by Schrade and Buck and some obscure US based custom knife makers.

I've got a Leatherman Supertool, got it and others with magazine subscriptions. I've got a few brands others too, but they don't come near the Supertool, nor IMHO do some of the cheaper Leatherman range.

I also have a couple of Victorinox pocket knives that I have had for variously 20-30 years. I grew up with one in my pocket, and to me they're a symbol of quality and practicality.

I like to give Leatherman's or a Victorinox as gifts to friends and colleagues. Perhaps it's just me, but I reckon years from now they'll use it and be grateful for such a ripper bit of gear.

Would buying Leatherman products of E-bay concern anyone?  Or can someone recommend a trusted supplier for these things.

Leatherman and Gerber are both top quality items.  Looking at one myself at the moment so interested in others replies here also.

We did buy our son a leatherman for his 21st.  It was the top of the range which they sell in Albury for around $300+, we ended up buying it from the US for around $120 Aussie dollars inc freight.  And that was back when our dollar was below 80c US.

I purchased my first leatherman tool 25yrs ago and still have it(but is retired). I have recently purchased a Leatherman Surge(from Ebay). Fantastic bit of gear, comfortable grips, strong pliers and plenty of tools on board. It is fairly heavy, you need your belt tight or it'll pull your trousers down >:(
I think I paid $115 for it off ebay which is very cheap, it was brand new genuine item. I had to send it back for a repair job a few months back and there were no questions asked by Zen Imports.(the pliers are strong but dont try to lever side ways with them :'( )

I've got a Leatherman Wave Ti. I've had   both leatherman and gerber before, both excellent quality but I reckon the new leathermans are easier to use.
The Wave is used on a daily basis and I feel lost with out it.
I purchased my last one off of eBay,(Adelaide based seller) who sells sh!t loads of them. No worries he sells genuine stuff not Chinese crap. Was heaps cheaper than any shops were selling them for.

I have a Wave and s Supatool also, they don't get a run since getting a Skeletool. The carbon fibre in the handle gets me emotional.

Whilst I'm sure this isn't in the same league as some of the ones being talked about here this is a hammer based multi-tool if anyone was interested

note: as the linked site changes the item every 24 hours the link will probably only work for 1 day.

I carry a knife every day and feel naked without it. My knife ( multi tool ) is no match for these weapon's of mechanical warfare but has served me well for many years. But after seeing some of these i may have to consider an up grade, would be good to see some pics of other models on here.

I've got  a wave which I use for work sometimes. It's usually not too far away wherever I am. I bought my dad a Charge for his 50th and he seems to like it.

I really like that Skeletool pictured above!

Interesting that I came across this topic - my wife gave me a Leatherman Skeletool a week ago, and after reading though the replies here I was curious about what it cost (she only ever buys stuff at bargain prices) - so she logged on just now and it turns out she ordered and paid for a Leatherman Juice xe6 multitool at $99.99 (from 1day.com.au) and they've sent a Skeletool instead. It's a great little unit but I'm going to exchange it for the Juice.

1day.com.au current price for the Juice is $149.99

The Leatherman is replacing a Victorinox Spartan of unknown providence, I've had it since I was 14 or so (so 28 years now). I think my old mans best mate gave it to me on a fishing trip. My 4yo son will get the Victorinox sometime down the track, one of those dad to son things you have to do  :D

He has already told someone "When my dad dies I'm getting his Nissan Patrol" ;D

I have "The Man".   ;D  It  sets up the CT, removes jar lids, drives, chops wood, can make the bed, dishwash, clean, cooks, gets drinks, protects and does things around the house as well!  It didn't cost me anything up front, but I've found that keeping it in working order is a little expensive.

Kit_e_Kat -  ;D

Skeletool CX for me - a Christmas present last year, so it hasn't really got a good use yet (certainly not compared to these guys with 10yr old ones!), but so far I'm very happy with it. It's light as a feather, the semi-serrated blade is very useful, and like Danbri, the CF is just plain cool.

I've also got a Kingchrome multi which is a much heavier and larger unit - it lives in a side pocket of the tool bag. It's not as convenient, but has a lot more "functions" than the Skeletool, and it built like a brick out-house.

I find them both handy to have while out and about - the skeletool lives with me, and if I need something a bit heftier, there's the Kingchrome one waiting in the wings.

Thanks!
Matto :)

I have an Leatherman crunch. It has vice grips that come in very handy. Like most I have mine in my pocket daily except when venturing to the big smoke. I do not want to try and explain to the police at the train station that it is not a knife but a tool. A tool I use to save lives with and not take them. Oh and to cut up my orange too!
I love it and best of all I got it for free but I think they are around $200 ish.

I've got a Leatherman Wave, an unreal tool to have. Plenty of extras, helps me out nearly every day. The boys at work know a rep, so i got mine for $105, but i've seem them at Camping World up here for $230, not a bad little mark up ay. No small wonder why ebay is so popular, i think they're around $130 on there.

I have 3 multi tools, a Kershaw that has locking pliers, a Leatherman Wave and a new Leatherman Titanium wave, they have a lot of add on you can buy, albeit very expensive unless you buy them over the net.

The Leathermans are very good, but the Kershaw is better IMO, mainly because of the locking pliers, no many accessories if any, but still a very good multi tool.

I have the Leatherman Wave, possibly the best tool I have and use it (I live on a farm) almost every day.

My brother's Leatherman was burnt when our shed went up in flames. After a little cleaning it is working well though a little black in colour!!

If in Victoria, when the Police do a blitz on concealed weapons you could well be arrested and fined ($1000.00) for carrying a Leatherman, this is reported to have happened to a farmer at a recent blitz in the eastern suburbs!!

Well this is the multi tool collection from it.
There is a couple of waves, a surge, a multi tool, a toolzall pro, and some other german one. Plus some other crap
I couldn't for the life of me think of a reason to carry one of those things on my belt

Interesting thread to pick up - my Victorinox SwissTool is approaching 20 years old now (which is a bit scary) and has travelled well with me.

It ended up with a replacement pouch after discovering that nylon pouches aren't Labrador proof 9 years ago...

I ended up with a Gerber with some drill bits, so that's semi useful.

Great thread. I'm still using my original shaped leatherman wave from the 90's. At one stage it was rusted solid in the bottom of a boat where I lost it. Found it and rebirthed it and she's still kicking goals.

I still have my old Leatherman (and leather pouch) from 1992.

It's done a big lap on the bicycle with me in 1992/1993, the Cape in 1995 and countless mtb and 4wd trips since then.

I have a Leatherman Skeletool that lives in my 4WD door pocket. Don't use it too often, mainly for the knife and cutting up fruit, had it maybe 10/12 years. I also had another Leatherman but a bigger version (can't remember which one) but I find them too small and uncomfortable to use regularly.
